Programming / Re: Can I Learn Programming From My Android Phone? by kennbox(m): 10:45am On Nov 01, 2019
Yes, you can learn the rudiments of programming on an android device.
You may need these:
1. A terminal emulator (termux is great for android).
2. A programming language compiler (like gcc/g++) or for others like (python or php runtime environments).
3. A good book on introduction to programming, maybe with python or with c. (A hard copy book is strongly advised, to free up the phone for the coding).
4. If you can get hold of an external Bluetooth keyboard, you would really enjoy the whole experience.
5. Then, invest a little time playing around with all of these. Don't just hide or give up when faced with a challenge

Best of luck, you would enjoy yourself.

Programming / Re: I Want To Learn Programming. Which Language Should I Start With? by kennbox(m): 11:19am On Jul 22, 2013
You can Learn Python.

Python programming is relatively beginner friendly, also it's a robust and featured language that you can do almost anything with.

If, you can, go through these tutorials

Excellent for beginners

Programming / Re: What Development Chain Do You Use For C++? by kennbox(m): 12:50pm On Feb 24, 2012
Howdy people,

Well,
I basically use:
Linux(mainly)/Win32
Eclipse
GCC/G++/MinGW + GDB
CMAKE
and UnitTest (occasionally)

for UI/Crossplatform related apps, I use QT
www.qt.nokia.com

also Heavily uses BoostC++
www.boost.org

well, for a beginner, I would advice GCC/G++ with any nice syntax highlighting capable Editor (like gEdit)

Keep Coding,

Hi Guys

@worldbest
I totally agree with moving forward.

I think we could host something now (using any of the free code hosting facilities, sourceforge or even google code)

As for my own storyline, Here it goes.

Big Picture Summary:
In a far away kingdom in Umueze, a child is born,His grows up and will eventually liberate his kingdom from the core forces of terror.

Chapters:
1.
Primary Characters
a. Aziza (the Warrior still a young guy about 12 yrs old)
b. Udoji (His father, a farmer who hates hunting and disapproves hunting for his boy)
c. Ogu (Grandfather of Aziza, Most Respected hunter in the village, but retired)
d. Mma (Azziza’s Sister. Really beautiful)
e. Hunters
i. Obiadada
ii. Odogwu
iii. Akabo
iv. Indiama
v. Asukwor
These Hunters hunt periodically in the forests. lead by Amandi the strong one.
GODS

Chi- (personal guardian for each characters)
Chiaza (guardian for Aziza).
Nwangele leader of the Chi gods

Level One:
Game Starts With this Story.
In the kingdom of Umueze, the people live happy lives ,
the Ezinano festivity is just around the corner .
The gods of the land are looking for a worthy one to use for their mission.
The villagers are preparing themselves for possible selection by the gods.

Scene 1.
Aziza suddenly finds himself in a cave (3d maze e.g caverunner3d first person style), He wanders about in the cave, he discovers that the cave contains paintings on the walls that tell a little history about his village.
He is even amazed to discover that the painting contain traces his own particular family past and future.
he tries to get out of the cave, but cannot as all the cave exits are blocked buy powerful enchantments.
He then realizes that he would have learnt some enchantments from his grandfather Ogu.
He Wanders about in the cave and discovers the beautiful scence in it.
after he gets to a particular point in the cave, he hears a familiar song , and (Chiaza son of Nwangele) appears to him, (chiaza looks more like casper (Ghost busters ) levitates in the air with white radiance) and leads him (Aziza follows behind) to an exit point.
At the point of Exit, Aziza wakes up and discovers that he has been dreaming.
Mission for this Level:
1. Wander About in the cave
2. Read all the markings on the cave wall
3. Find Chiaza.

Music:
Any Common (Ogene) would Do with 3d sound effects.

Precautionary Suggestions
This story as it is may not be built to have all the flash and effizzy and normal modern 3d game flunts.
I say we should just pull out a slight demo of it that will convince each one of Us that we now have a working community.
For theTechnical Specifications of this, we could select:
Game Engine: (ORGE, Panda, 3impact), But I would prefer if we use no engine at all and just test run with simple OPENGL or even SDL, then later select an engine
Language:
Main C++
Support C, Python

Modelers:
Any Low Polygon Modeler

Particle System /Collison:
We will have to come up with simplistic particle system and a collision detection and response.
Rendering:
OPENGL
Sound/Music:
OPENAL
Development Platform:
Linux box with all the stuff. (That’s what I use Sha! wink)
Windows Box.
Code Control:
Git. (requires little getting used to.)

If we start small we can grow to meet up with the world.
if we start heavy, we might take over the world (or fall out a.k.a abandoning the project)

Programming / Re: Game Development: Join The Team by kennbox(m): 5:34pm On Jul 03, 2010
Wow!
Great Contributions guys.

I think a simple story that will provide the opportunity for our team to fix it's base (define it's mode of operation) is what we need.
I buy the Idea of a 3d Maze walk around (Doom Style). But for first time sake, we could remove shooting of objects and add an interesting puzzle instead. e.g finding a key to open a portal or something, also, we could re modify the maze to reflect our local environment (possibly inside a cave), also with the use of music and speech that reflects who we are.

This as simple as it seems would be enough to test the team. As it involves almost all aspects of GD. I would say Let's give it a shot.
WE would need some thing though.
1. Collaboration Point (sourceforge.net might be usefull here)
2. Repository (a simple statement file is enough to start)
3. Development tool set (Game engine choice, Platform Choice e.t.c)

plus more.

keep em coming.

Game Programming is a really interesting way to learn programming from the very roots to pro level. Also to put to good use all the seemingly not so important algebra learnt in colleges, especially matrices and linear programming.

Well done guys

I 'lld post some game programming resouce when I'm more chanced.

Programming / Re: Soap Based Multi-threaded C++ Server by kennbox(m): 12:23pm On Jun 16, 2009
Thanks Kobojunkie

Where this proposed framework is to be used is in a university environment. The server is meant to accept multiple client calls and respond to each request. (Say Students requesting for result detials).

If say 500 requests come in, the server program should be able to fork out processes or threads or any other means of handling the requests without failure or leaks.

The message transport protocol could be (TCP/IP) Soap with wsdl or just plain xml transfers.

Again, anyone with knowlegde on an already existing similar (Open Source) framework would be in a helpful position
Programming / Re: Soap Based Multi-threaded C++ Server by kennbox(m): 2:29am On Jun 14, 2009
mainly network based distributed apps (service oriented) usually in a community where many users are expected to connect to the central server and retrieve small chunks of vital info regularly.

Connecting clients could be via (web services).

The app should be relatively fast and run on not so powerfull hardware. Also, it's to run off opensource cross-p tools with appriciable performance. lean machine performace is required.

Hi Guys. Any Ideas on how to start developing a soap based multi-threaded c++ server framework, to be used in n-tier apps? from design to finish, using oss tools (Boost, Apache, Lighttpd, gsoap, axis , and many more).
Programming / Re: C++ by kennbox(m): 1:47am On Jun 14, 2009
You Can Start programming C++ by deciding to go open source tools
You can use the MING C/C++ tools with eclipse CDT (if you already have some experirnce)
To really start yourself I advice you to go for DEVC++ www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html
Programming / Re: C++ Or Java: Which Way To Go? by kennbox(m): 1:39am On Jun 14, 2009
You can Get a whole lot GUI Libraries for C++. Most of which are cross-platform and quite fast.
A Common One would be Trolltech QT which is really somthing.

It's not just a GUI Library, but a collection of Very good utilities attached.
It has an opensource option www.qtsoftware.com

Also C++ has a huge library base.
See Boost.

Cheers! n Good Luck

Hello! Great Nairalanders.
Would'nt it be great to start a 3D game project that is naija based? ( I mean with Nigerian themes).
I mean, Guys look we have the resources (cool c++ programmers, OSS Game engines like (OGRE), very nice graphics designers/artists, and hopefully good sound developers).
Let's reason and see what can be done. (The financial prospects can be quite huge u know).

Cheers Everyone Merry Xmas and a very happy new year celebs,

Programming / Re: PHP Or Coldfusion: Which Is Better? by kennbox(m): 2:04pm On Oct 30, 2006
Php versus cold fusion Oh My God!!!
What Comparision?
PhP is a world leader in the realm of webserver scripting. ColdFusion is nice I know, but I think Php is superior from the following reasons.
- PhP is OSS ( Open source software). developed by the universe and maintained by pros.
- PhP is lingua franca when it comes to LAMP (Linux apache mysql and PHP).
- PHP is easy to use as transition from a previous programming languauge like c or c++ or java is easy. Just a couple of hours
- apache installers of today comes with PhP pre configured.
- Not just a script, PHP could be used as a full blown programming language

and above all PHP is entirely FREE!!!!! with Source code LIVE!!!!
PHP has a huge user base support ( tutorials, books, e-books , )
Extremly cheap PHP host, alot of em are free self!
in Short PHP na you biko?
