IN line with its mandate, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set a tariff cap of N4 per Short Messaging Service (SMS) for all domestic off-net SMS with effect from February 5, 2013.

NCC, which said it will not place a price cap on international SMS for now, disclosed that the directive to this effect had been communicated to all the operators including MTN Nigeria, Globacom, Airtel and emerging market telecommunications service, operating as Etisalat in Nigeria since January 3, 2013.

The Code Division Multiple Access operators including Starcomms, Visafone and Multi Links are also affected by the new directive.

Off-net SMS is message sent from one network to another, like from MTN to Etisalat.

Currently, off-net SMS tariff ranges between N9 and N10, while on-net goes for N5 within same network.

The directive, which was signed by the Director, Legal and Regulatory Services of NCC, Josephine Amuwa, issued yesterday, said the NCC arrived at the new price cap after due considerations of the submissions made by the operators at various consultative meetings.

Amuwa said having evaluated and analysed SMS traffic information provided by the operators, the Commission noted that “there was a general recognition that the cost of SMS is too high, especially in view of the interconnection rate of N1.02 for SMS as determined by the Commission in 2009.”

She also noted that the operators had proposed a price cap ranging between N5 and N10 per message for off-net SMS.

According to her, the operators also urged the commission not to set a cap for international SMS due to the fact that interconnect rates for international SMS were outside their control as it is terminated through international carrier service providers in various jurisdictions.

Indeed, Amuwa said that the commission took the decision based on these considerations, and in the interest of striking a balance between sustaining operator’s profitability and ensuring consumer satisfaction, and also in accordance with its powers as conferred on the commission under Sections 4 and Chapter VII of the NCC Act, 2003.

Late MC Loph's son Obiajulu Jnr has been adopted by Morgan Entertainment boss, Emeka Morgan Oguejiofor (late MC Loph's Record Label).

MC Loph's fiancee Nkiru, a medical practitioner had given birth to Obiajulu Jnr on Tuesday 20th March 2012, four months after her fiance died in an auto crash as the couple travelled home to Enugu State for their traditional marriage.

In a statement, Emeka, late Loph's boss said:

''MC Loph's family became my second family from the very day that unfortunate incident happened. and I have been living up to expectations. This is not a joking matter. No one prays for a thing like this, but once it happens, it's no time to start feasting on it negatively. None of these people who called themselves MC Loph's friends have deemed it fit to even pay a visit to is mother and yet they maintained they are his friends and Morgan. As for Obiajulu Jnr. Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Bamidele Aturu, has written to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor, Lamido Sanusi to furnish details of his salary, allowances and others to him under the Freedom of Information Act, FOI, within seven days or face legal action.

Aturu wrote to Sanusi on behalf of his client, an advocate of the Supreme Court, Anthony Itedjere.

Aturu, in a letter to the CBN Governor dated 31 December, 2012 said his client is acting in accordance with section 1, 3 and 4 of the FOI Act to demand for the information.

According to the letter, “our client is interested in certain information which is in possession and or custody of the Central Bank of Nigeria (hereinafter referred to as ‘the bank’) and your office. Kindly provide the information to the best of your knowledge in the interest of transparency and openness which you have been advertised as championing.

“You are hereby specifically requested to make available to our client or grant to him access to: The Central Bank Act provides that your salary, fee, wages or other remuneration or allowances shall be stipulated from time to time by the Board subject to the approval of the President; How much is your total remuneration (that is salary plus allowances) per month? Do you charge the Bank or the Federal Government of Nigeria any fee outside your monthly remuneration? If so, state any such fee you have received since becoming the Governor of the bank.

“Do you travel business class or economy within Nigeria? Do you travel first class, business class or economy when travelling out of Nigeria? Have you ever used chartered plane for any of your travels within and outside Nigeria? If your answer to the above is in the affirmative, kindly list all such instances specifying the dates, the airline(s), the cost and the duration of the charter?” he requested.

Other information Aturu’s client is seeking from the CBN’s governor are: “Does the Bank own an aircraft? If so, what is the cost of the air craft and the cost of its servicing and maintenance? How many drivers are attached to your office by the bank? How many cleaners are attached to your office by the bank?

“How many drivers are attached to your house by the bank? How many cleaners are attached to your house by the bank? How much is your monthly imprest? When you travel within Nigeria, how much is your allowance? When you travel outside Nigeria, how much is your allowance? When last did you spend your personal money on purchasing fuel since you became the Governor of the bank?”

The letter added: “if you think that another agency of the government has greater interest in the information requested for, you are obliged under Section 5 of the Freedom of Information Act 2011 to transfer this request to the other agency within 3 days, howbeit not later than 7 days of receiving this request.

“Our client shall pay the necessary fees for the information. Be notified that if you fail to provide the above information within the period stipulated by law, we shall proceed against you in accordance with the provisions of the law.”

Well, last night, news broke out that Davido, after Karen Igho had just received a slap of life from a king.


According to the gist, Davido was slapped by King Saheed Elegushi at the after-party of the Dynamix awards which took place at Voodoo lounge, Elegushi beach.


Someone, B-Red supposedly got heavily drunk, got into an argument with the King when Davido moved forward to touch the king.


In a flash the monarch allegedly delivered a hot slap on Davido’s face and they were mercilessly beaten including Davido’s bouncer by the Elegushi guards.

Operatives of the State Security Service, SSS, have arrested six of the abductors of Prof. Keneme Okonjo, mother of the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala. Okonjo,

Last week, 63 of the suspects earlier arrested by the Army were released unconditionally when their culpability could not be established.

A competent source at the SSS told National Mirror yesterday that six of the real suspects had eventually been arrested in Asaba, Delta State, and might be flown to Abuja today.

The source also confirmed that a N40m ransom was actually paid for the release of the 82-year- old retired professor of Sociology.

Explaining how the suspects were arrested, the source said: “The N40m, which was paid to the kidnappers was marked money from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. “What happened was that the money was paid on Wednesday by our men and by Thursday, two persons had gone to the Nebisi Road branch of an old generation bank to deposit N15m out of the money.

Because it was marked money, they were promptly arrested. “Our men were able to track four of the kidnappers with the aid of the two persons. Right now, we are on the trail of the remaining four suspects.

“The six suspects are supposed to be brought to Abuja tomorrow (today) to face further interrogation.”

Asked why the operatives were not able to arrest the suspects the time they came for the money, the source explained: “Don’t forget that as at that time the woman was still with the kidnappers and they could decide to kill her if they suspect anything phony. “Our major concern then was to ensure that the woman regained her freedom and was not harmed in any way.

In fact, that was the point the minister kept hammering to us. “She said that we should do everything possible to secure her mother alive, even if it meant paying whatever ransom the kidnappers asked for. “If you know how this is done, once they came for the money, we knew that the game was up for them. We knew that we must get them unless they would not spend that money in Nigeria.”

During a press briefing yesterday, the police in Owerri, the Imo state capital told reporters that Nkiru Sylvanus' family paid N8 million to the kidnappers before she was released on Thursday night.


According to the Commissioner of Police, Adisa Bolanta, the family did this without the knowledge of the police as they had been warned not to negotiate or deal directly with the kidnappers.


But somehow, Nkiru's family defied their orders.


The Commisioner said:


"They defied our warnings and continued negotiations with the kidnappers. They went behind us and paid N8 million to them. We have made some arrests in connection with the case and very soon they will all be apprehended."

There was a fire outbreak at the extension by arrival hall of the Muritala Mohammed Int'l Airport, Lagos today.

Cause of fire by an eyewitness was from some cables, which apparently melted under heat.

This led to a blackout in the airport terminal while fire fighters deployed swiftly in the affected area to quench the inferno.

They were able to put the situation under control while securitymen erected a metal barricade around the site.

No casualties have been reported.
