Politics / Fresh Trouble For Nwosu, As Aa Guber Candidate, Okolienta Goes To Court by manuch(m): 1:22am On Dec 06, 2018
The desire of the former Chief of Staff to the Imo State governor, Chief Uche Nwosu to run the governorship race in 2019 using any of the parties has ran into troubled waters with the ticket owner of the Action Alliance rushing to court to seek redress.
Indications that Nwosu may have finally dumped APC for the Action Alliance, AA after several reports that he would dump the ruling have finally emerged with billboards of the governor’s son in-law bearing the AA name and logo.
Governor Rochas Okorocha who is Nwosu’ s backbone for the governorship race had a week ago revealed signals that Nwosu and others aggrieved over the outcome of APC primaries would seek alternative party platforms to run the 2019 elections.
Despite the intervention of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee set up by the NWC to wade into the complaints of the aggrieved persons who felt dissatisfied with the conduct, Okorocha’s men led by Nwosu have moved to the AA while the governor remains in APC to run the race.
After a week of speculation on next move, AA became the designation of Nwosu and some assembly members who lost out.
However, Trumpeta learnt that it is not yet Uhuru for Nwosu as the original ticket holder whose name has been with INEC since the first window for submission elapsed on Nov 2, Okolienta is threatening fire and brimstone over the development.
This newspaper learnt that the said Okolienta has approached a court to seek redress on reasons why he was stripped of the governorship ticket and allegedly handed to Nwosu.
An aide to the displaced AA governorship candidate, who chose not to be mentioned, informed the newspaper that legal approaches have been sought to redeem the situation.
Nwosu had ran the APC governorship ticket primary race but lost to Senator Hope Uzodinma. After initial link to DPP, AA finally became his platform. At strategic positions in the State, Nwosu AA billboards with President Buhari for 2019 election littered the state capital
Sports / Nigeria Renew Interest In Everton's Ademola Lookman by manuch(m): 2:38am On Oct 28, 2018
Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr is still keen on persuading Everton's Ademola Lookman to play for the Super Eagles.

The 21-year-old helped England win the 2017 Under-20 World Cup, but can switch allegiances as he is yet to play for the senior side.

He was born in England but qualifies for Nigeria through his parents, has been a target for them for two years.

"He plays for the youth now but we hope he can change his mind and play for us," Rohr told BBC Sport.

"He's a player we know can add something to the team.

"Getting a player to change his national choice is not easy, quick and the process is never so straightforward.

"First we must be sure he wants to come. And hope to get it cleared by Fifa.

"Then the most important part is that he brings something new, different and better than we have."

Nigeria have previously succeeded convincing several former England youth internationals like Sone Aluko, Victor Moses, Shola Ameobi, Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina to swap allegiances.

Liverpool's Sheyi Ojo also told the BBC that he would love to represent Nigeria if they approach him.

Should Lookman opt for Nigeria he would face competition from Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Henry Onyekuru and Samuel Kalu for a place in the current squad.

"Every coach wants options, we've been lucky to get some players and if we get him, Lookman will give us more options," Rohr explained.

"But we have to be careful about how we go about this because Nigeria have some good players at home and playing outside."

Lookman scored 12 goals in 49 games for Charlton before joining Everton in January 2017.

He played on loan at German club RB Leipzig last season but has struggled for regular game time this season.

Sports / Jack Wilshere: Arsenal Midfielder Confirms Departure by manuch(m): 11:41pm On Jun 19, 2018
Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.

The 26-year-old England international made his Gunners debut in 2008 and has made 197 first-team appearances.

However, his future at Emirates Stadium was in doubt following the arrival of new manager Unai Emery.

"I felt that I was ultimately left with little choice but to make the decision that I have due to purely footballing reasons," he wrote on Instagram.

"Such was my desire to stay that I had in fact recently agreed to sign a financially reduced contract in order to commit my future to the club.

"My intention throughout these discussions has always been to remain an Arsenal player. I have been on the books at Arsenal for 17 years and have always felt part of the fabric of the club.

"Following my meeting with the new manager I was made aware that although the reduced contract offer remained, it was made clear to me that my playing time would be significantly reduced should I decide to stay.

"I am sure everyone can understand that at this point in my life and career I need to be playing first-team football and following my meeting with Mr Emery I came away feeling that it would be very difficult for me to do so at Arsenal.

"Given this, I feel I have no option but to pursue other opportunities in order to progress my career on the pitch."

Politics / Governor Okorocha Sacks All Commissioners by manuch(m): 10:22pm On May 30, 2017
Rochas Okorocha, governor of Imo state, has sacked the state executive council and 27 local government transition committees, with immediate effect.

A statement by Pascal Obi, principal secretary to the governor, directed all former members of the executive to hand over to permanent secretaries or the most senior director in their ministries.

Obi quoted the governor as appreciating the invaluable contributions of the affected appointees to the success recorded by his “rescue mission” administration.

According to him, the secretary to the government, the chief of staff, chairmen and members of statutory commissions such as ISEC, Civil Service Commission, local government service commission were not affected.

“Also not affected in the cabinet shake-up are the state universal basic education board, the judicial service commission, and the house of assembly service commission,” the statement read.

“The governor also dissolved the 27 transition committees (TC) of the 27 local government areas in the state.

“The transition committee (TC) chairmen are advised to hand over to the directors of administration and general services of their respective council areas.

“The governor appreciates the contributions of the TC chairmen to the success of the rescue mission and wishes them well in their future endeavours.”

The governor did not state any reason for the action.

Okorocha took a similar action in 2013 when he sacked members of the state executive council mid-way into their weekly meeting.

The commissioners in attendance had expressed shock.

Politics / I Am Not A Thief- Ibori In Case You Have Memory Loss Let Me Remind You by manuch(m): 1:01am On Feb 14, 2017
Nigeria ex-Delta state governor James Ibori guilty plea

James Ibori, a former governor of one of Nigeria's oil-producing states, has pleaded guilty in a UK court to 10 counts of money-laundering and conspiracy to defraud.

British police accuse him of stealing $250m (£160m) over eight years.
The prosecutor called him a "thief in government house".
Ibori, once seen as one of Nigeria's wealthiest and most influential politicians, was arrested in 2010 in Dubai and then extradited to London.
Some $35m of his alleged UK assets were frozen in 2007.

As his trial at London's Southwark Crown Court was about to begin, Mr Ibori changed his plea to guilty and admitted stealing money from Delta state and laundering it in London through a number of offshore companies.
We will now be actively seeking the confiscation of all of his stolen assets so they can be repatriated for the benefit of the people of Delta state
Paul Whatmore, Metropolitan Police
The BBC's Chris Summers says between 20 and 30 of Mr Ibori's supporters turned up to court - some wearing T-shirts with the slogan "Free Ibori". There was not enough room for them all in the public gallery.
Prosecuting QC Sasha Wass said Mr Ibori, 53, had "tricked" his way into becoming Delta state governor, by giving a false date of birth and claiming he had no criminal record.
"He was never the legitimate governor and there was effectively a thief in government house. As the pretender of that public office, he was able to plunder Delta state's wealth and hand out patronage."
He is due to be sentenced on 16 April.
'Lavish lifestyle'
Ibori's wife, Theresa, his sister, Christine, his mistress, Udoamaaka Okoronkwo, and his London solicitor, Bhadresh Gohil, have all been convicted of money-laundering.
Their convictions could only be reported on Monday after reporting restrictions were lifted.
The rise and fall of James Ibori

1958: Born in Delta state, UK police believe, saying he previously lied about his age
1980s: Moved to UK
1991: Convicted of stealing from DIY shop Wickes
1992: Convicted of credit card fraud
1993-4: Allies himself to Nigeria's then military ruler Sani Abacha
1999: Elected Delta state governor
2007: Stepped down as governor
2007: UK assets worth $35m frozen
December 2007: Arrested in Nigeria on corruption charges
2009: Nigeria court dismisses charges
April 2010: Ibori's supporters attack police as they try to arrest him
May 2010: Arrested in Dubai
2011: Extradited to UK
2012: Pleads guilty to money-laundering in London court
Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had asked the UK's Metropolitan Police to look into the ex-governor's financial affairs.
"The vast sums of money involved were used to fund Mr Ibori's lavish lifestyle," Detective Inspector Paul Whatmore, the officer in charge of the investigation, said.
"We will now be actively seeking the confiscation of all of his stolen assets so they can be repatriated for the benefit of the people of Delta State."
He said that the money Ibori stole should have been used to pay for sanitation, power supplies and healthcare for some of the poorest people in the world.
Ibori spent some of the stolen money buying six houses in London - he paid £2.2m in cash for one Hampstead mansion - and put his children in expensive British private schools, police say.

Ibori has been convicted in the UK before - in 1991 for stealing, in cahoots with his wife who worked as a cashier, from the Neasden, London, branch of the shop Wickes.
He was also found guilty in 1992 for being in possession of a stolen credit card and having used it to fraudulently withdraw $1,590.

Politics / Nigeria To Join Open Government Partnership by manuch(m): 8:21pm On May 12, 2016
The Open Government Partnership (OGP) welcomed the announcement by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s that Nigeria is joining OGP. “A main component of this anti-corruption partnership is that governments must demonstrate unquestionable political will and commitment to the fight. The private sector must come clean and be transparent, and civil society, while keeping a watch on all stakeholders, must act and report with a sense of responsibility and objectivity. For our part, Nigeria is committed to signing the Open Government Partnership.” said Buhari. Buhari was addressing a gathering of over 300 government, civil society, and business leaders at the Tackling Corruption Conference, organized at Marlborough House, in advance of the UK Government’s Anti-Corruption Summit. “We welcome Nigeria to a partnership of 69 governments and thousands of civil society organizations committed to improving accountability and transparency in government,” OGP CEO Sanjay Pradhan said. “Through OGP, collective ambitions are raised, ideas and innovations are shared, and lasting policy response can be secured. Nigeria has taken a huge step forward in signalling its intention to put tackling corruption at the heart of its reform agenda." One of OGP’s eight founding countries, the United Kingdom today launched its third National Action Plan. The new plan was developed with civil society organizations, and includes a commitment to implement the Open Contracting Data Standard, meaning open data will be available across the full contracting cycle, including for major infrastructure projects. The UK will also establish a public register of company beneficial ownership information for foreign companies who already own or buy property in the UK, or who bid on UK central government contracts. The Summit Communique, negotiated by 40 governments, recognizes the role that OGP can play in catalyzing anti-corruption reform and accountability. It states: "We recognise the value of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in advancing transparency and good governance reform through national commitments made together with civil society, and the value of the OGP’s Independent Reporting Mechanism in providing accountability. OGP participating governments among us will work with civil society to embed our Summit commitments into National Action Plans where appropriate." In addition to the Summit Communique, the attending countries published individual country statements, highlighting the measures they were undertaking to tackle corruption. 11 countries, including, Afghanistan, Australia, France, Germany, Georgia, Kenya, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Romania, and the United States, explicitly stated that they will be engaging with OGP in furthering their anti-corruption agenda. Pradhan invited heads of state and other international leaders at the historic event to continue using OGP to facilitate the implementation of anti-corruption commitments, and announced a special session at OGP’s Global Summit in Paris, December 7-9, 2016 dedicated to follow-up on the commitments made today. - See more at: http://www.opengovpartnership.org/blog/madaleine-weber/2016/05/12/press-release-nigeria-join-open-government-partnership#sthash.3LjKlYWx.dpuf

Politics / Britishman Is Convicted Of Giving Bribes For Nigerian Banknote Printing Contract by manuch(m): 8:27pm On May 11, 2016
A businessman was convicted of making bribes to secure a Nigerian bank note printing contract after a judge warned a jury to ignore David Cameron’s controversial remarks about corruption.
Peter Chapman, 54, bribed an official at the Nigerian mint to secure a 'multi-million-euro' contract for an Australian manufacturer that he managed.
His conviction comes a day after Mr Cameron's toe-curling gaffe where he was caught on camera being indiscreet about the countries he had invited to a key anti-corruption summit tomorrow.
The Prime Minister was clutching a wine glass and making small talk with the Queen at a Buckingham Palace reception when he branded Nigeria 'fantastically corrupt.'
But at Southwark Crown Court Judge Michael Grieve, QC, warned the jury that the Prime Minister’s remarks were ‘gross generalisation’.
The court heard that the central bank of Nigeria were making the political decision whether to convert bank notes from paper notes to polymer notes.
Chapman made payments totalling £136,000 between July 2007 and March 2009 to secure orders of polymer substrate for his company.
Chapman sent the money via a private company he used as a consultancy business to help agree oil contracts between Russia and the UK.
Before they returned their verdicts, jurors had been advised to ‘completely ignore’ the Prime Minister's unguarded comments.
Judge Grieve told them: ‘You must try this case on the evidence before you in this court and nothing else.‘I am doing so because of certain remarks made by the Prime Minister yesterday on the subject of corruption which have been widely reported by the press and other parts of the media.
‘You must completely ignore anything you may have seen or heard or read about what the Prime Minister said.
‘It was almost certainly a gross generalisation and certainly had no direct relevance to anyone involved in this case.’

Chapman sent the money in transactions to an official at the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc to secure the contract for his Securency International Pty Ltd.
John McGuinness QC, prosecuting, said: ‘The prosecution say that they were effectively bribes to facilitate Securency getting orders.’
‘The first contract for Securency to supply polymer substrate so that it could be produced at the mint was in 2006 - further contracts and supplies followed.
‘This was a valuable business to Securency worth many millions of Euros.’
Chapman arranged for hundreds of thousands of dollars to be transferred through a web of offshore companies and accounts.
Payments initially went straight to the official from a company named Swingaxle that Chapman had registered in the Seychelles for ‘various side projects’.

Later bribes went by a more complicated route - to a company the official had set up using false documents including the photograph of an unwitting driver who worked for the mint.
Mr McGuinness added that as part of Chapman’s pay package he would be entitled to commission on deals that he had brokered.
At the time of the payments Securency were putting pressure on Chapman and other staff members to try and secure valuable contracts, Mr McGuinness said.
Chapman claimed the money he was paying was just paying back a loan made to him by the mint official to cover his expenses in Nigeria.
One of the companies involved in the money transfer claims to work in general contracting and janitorial services which would not have been needed if Chapman was just paying back a loan.
Chapman was known as being very particular for expenses - including making a claim for a £4.21 lunch - but there was no record of his claiming the expenses that he used as an excuse for the bribe payments.
Chapman, of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, was found guilty of four counts of corruption and cleared of two other counts.
He will be sentenced tomorrow morning.

Politics / Senate: 5-year Jail Term For Randy Lecturers On The Way by manuch(m): 7:24pm On May 04, 2016
A bill for a law which prescribes five-year jail term for lecturers who engage in sexual relationship with students was passed for first reading in the Senate on Wednesday.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege (Labour-Delta Central) and co-sponsored by 46 other senators, seeks to completely prohibit any form of sexual relationship between lecturers and their students.

Briefing newsmen after plenary, Omo-Agege said that the nation’s institutions of higher learning must be sanitised to rid them of lecturers who saw female students as “prize’’.

According to him, when the bill is passed and signed into law, any lecturer found guilty will be liable to a jail term of up to five years but not less than two years with no option of fine.

“When passed into law, it makes it a criminal offence for any educator in a university, polytechnic or any other tertiary educational institution to violate or exploit the student-lecturer fiduciary relationship for sexual pleasures.

“The bill imposes stiff penalties on offenders in its overall objective of providing tighter statutory protection for students against sexual hostility and all forms of sexual harassment in tertiary schools.

“The bill provides a compulsory five-year jail term for lecturers who sexually harass students.

“When passed into law, vice chancellors of universities, rectors of polytechnics and other chief executives of institutions of higher learning will go to jail for two years if they fail to act within a week on complaints of sexual harassment made by students.

“The bill expressly allows sexually harassed students, their parents or guardians to seek civil remedies in damages against sexual predator lecturers before or after their successful criminal prosecution by the State.

“The bill also seeks to protect, from sexual harassment, prospective students seeking admissions into institutions of learning, students of generally low mental capacity and physically challenged students,’’ he stated.

The lawmaker said that it was practicable in other climes as “honour codes’’ but stressed that it should be domesticated in Nigeria in the Penal form.

The bill reads: “an educator shall be guilty of committing an offence of sexual harassment against a student if he/she has sexual intercourse with a student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he has sexual intercourse with a student or demands for sex from a student or a prospective student as a condition to study in an institution.

“He or she shall be guilty if he has sexual intercourse with a student or demands for sex from a student or a prospective student as a condition to the giving of a passing grade.

“ He or she shall be guilty if he solicits sex from or makes sexual advances at a student when the sexual solicitation or sexual advances result in an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment for the student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he directs or induces another person to commit any act of sexual harassment under this Act, or cooperates in the commission of sexual harassment by another person.

“He or she shall be guilty if he grabs, hugs, rubs or strokes or touches or pinches the breasts or hair or lips or hips or buttocks or any other sensual part of the body of a student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he displays, gives or sends by hand or courier or electronic or any other means naked or sexually explicit pictures or videos or sex related objects to a student.

“He or she shall be guilty if he whistles or winks at a student or screams or exclaims or jokes or makes sexually complimentary or uncomplimentary remarks about a student’s physique.’’

The bill also has provisions to sanction students who falsely accuse lecturers of sexual harassment. Such students could face dismissal from the school but no jail term was prescribed.

According to the bill, the only exemption is where the student is legally married to the lecturer before admission in the school as a student.

It states that the consent of the student shall not serve, in anyway, as a defence as the bill seeks to completely ban lecturer-student relationships.
The bill also imposes on institutions the responsibility to protect students who initiates a sexual harassment charge.
