Quite a fascinating and emotion-laden real-life documentary mixed with the Nigerian intrigues and resilience as well in action! Agreed leadership in Nigeria is failing not just within the public sector but also in families.
I think most of us are complaining of corruption because we lack opportunities to be directly involved in governance. Lets be fair to ourselves and have a rethink of some of the things we do as well within our immediate environment.How transparent are our dealings with others?

Take for instance, a market woman who sells 'egusi'(melon seed) in the market place with 'measurement' cups stuffed with paper inside it in a bid to make more profits. So who then is defrauding or seemingly cheating who here? Government officials or poor-to-poor fraud?

This is also in parallel with a passenger who voluntarily entered a commercial bus and claimed to have made payment to the bus conductor even when he is fully aware that he is lying and a bus conductor who cheats his driver by telling the driver that only 10 passengers entered into the bus whereas they were more than 10 passengers as well as the bus driver who habitually shortchanges his boss(bus owner) and would always lie about engine knock even when there are proofs that the bus driver was seen transiting passengers from one location to another.
What am I trying to illustrate here? That we as Nigerians live and eat in a "cyclical corruption" or what economists would call vicious cycle of corruption.

We need to own up to the fact that one way or the other most of us are either religiously or irreligiously enmeshed in this evil called "corruption". Methinks, what is at play within Nigeria is corrupt mentality amongst most Nigerians.

This country called Nigeria can only be fixed when we all we decide to pay less attention to materialism. Our value system and ethics need to change.Unfortunately, our religious bodies and community leaders have failed us in this regard.

What an interesting post with dissenting opinions!

Initially, I felt I should just ignore the post but my inner impulsion just can't resist the post.

I have got 2 questions for my christian brethren and others who are equally religiously minded.

One, is 666 meant to be a physical mark or what? Kindly buttress your points biblically.

Secondly, is innovation akin to evil? What is simply at work here is the application of RFID to health.

More so, I do not think everyone would readily accept this technology but this does not necessarily connote that this ongoing research is evil-driven.

If there is anything that is evil, it is when (wo)men fail to undertake in good enterprises that could add values to the society.

Without mincing words, scientists are the greatest assets that we have around, their unrivaled abilities and stoic determination to unravel mysteries make them God-gifts to human life.

Have we ever wondered the kind of 'force' that is at play whenever we make calls from one destination to another with the use of a cellphone? The Internet is another disruptive technology that is so hard to really fathom. Lets give it to scientists! We owe much in this life to ground breaking discoveries by scientists!! I am pretty sure our lives would have been much more miserable without scientific research.

Most times, I have come to the understanding that we Africans have become so irresponsible to our daily chores due to our own style of religion that has all the trappings of hypocrisy mixed with miraculous fantasies.

Think about this, without modern day technologies and innovations the world would have been seemingly 'darker in knowledge' than the present knowledge-based society you and I live in.

Please let us endeavour to do a thorough research on issues before running into conclusions that are quite sentimentally driven.

Finally, if we are indeed Christians, we ought to become creative in our world by thinking of how we can help improve on the society we live in and equally become innovative-driven. To sum it up, Christianity in action is not only based on confession but also fundamentally tied to good works.

'Our minds are the limitations and yardsticks for further progression in life'. It ought to be exercised productively for us to emancipate others from their own limitations!

I have chosen not to meddle in religious matters but I'm 'kinda' forced to react to this post based on common sense, which I believed its equally 'biblically' driven though without any explicit biblical quotation.

My take on this subject is rather simple and see below:

If Satan and his legions including the dead who were supposedly sinners on earth are languishing in 'hell or hell-fire' as at date,how come the devil and his 'troops-demons' still go about to and fro on the earth albeit causing 'mayhem'? Albeit, Satan cannot live in two places at a time now!

More so, if Jesus Christ was indeed in hell, how come the bible did not record he was tormented? After all,hell as its peddled is meant to be a place of torture.

Please take your time and ponder on it.

Btw: Lazarus and the rich man story was a proverb!

The Bible is majorly written in allegory and this is a fact we must admit and try to do a bit of research on subject matter.

Personally, sometimes I get confused about some key contexts in the bible,its just a fact for me! I am not oblivious of the fact that the truth in life is quite a hard-sell nay religion.

What a joke!If this story is true, it shows how Christianity has been hoodwinked by religious-business-minded swindlers.

Anyway, I do not see the Reverend's action as a christian practice,he is just acting out of religiosity and economical reasons.

Permit me to digress a bit,religion if practised as it is reflected in most holy books ought to re-engineer our 'minds/attitudes' to positivity nay progressive society built on love and order but the reverse seems to be the case in our country-Nigeria.

Perhaps, it is time the government becomes fiscally responsible by taxing churches and other religious organisations all in a bid of curbing the 'economic madness' in these religious bodies.

Its baffling but it is equally connected to the poor state of the Nigerian economy.

I am sure if our economy were to be good, there would be less of "religionism".

More so,'religionism'in Nigeria has given birth to hypocrisy and more emphasis on materialism rather than contentment and diligence.

The truth remains that majority of Nigerians seek solace in religion just to meet their human needs and not their spiritual needs.

Nigeria as a country cannot move in the right direction with the way religion is presently orchestrated and practised!

As religious as the country, we do not have values for human life,we want to grab it all without being considerate of others.

A poor economy has all the trappings of 'religionism' without a human face as its presently displayed in the Nigerian society.

Need I even remind you that most of the religious leaders are no different from most of of our political leaders. All men of unbridled appetite for acquisitions of comforts and luxuries!

Events happening in Nigeria show how spiritually decayed we are as a people. I wonder the kind of religion we as a people practise!

If there is any 'economic good/spiritual good' that sells like wildfire in Nigeria, its definitely religion! This can be more or less attributed to the squalor and excruciating poverty in Nigeria.

Sometimes, I weep for my country because of her myriad of human-related problems. Our problems in Nigeria are not spiritual but rather human induced problems caused by greed,poor leadership style/vision,impatience(wanna hit it big without breaking a sweat),triviality,intolerance,poor maintenance culture,tribalism/sectionalism,little or no respect for laws/order,lack of genuine love for mankind,etc


I have come to the realization that for us to get out of the woods in Nigeria, we must stop saying this hypocritical prayer"may God help us" but rather we need to make amends of our evil ways and start doing the right things at the right time,only then the Almighty God would hear us and help us indeed.

I believe the country can be great if we decide to make it great only by attitudinal change and NOT farce spiritualism at is being the order today.

Like Pastor Kun, hinted, there is a bit of obsession on your part on this topic.

Honestly, we all cannot be on the same spiritual page most times despite we all profess Christendom.

Contentions on doctrines have always been evident in the church(es) even during the days of the Apostles. I believe this in a way shows the fallibility and 'plurality(here, in terms of ideologies/human inventions')of(wo)men.

I remember reading vividly from the NT about Apostle Paul having to counsel some Christians on the need not to create a doctrine out of him and Peter.

Its equally a known fact albeit historically documented that so many Christianity as it was practised in the days of the Apostles or the early Christians have taken a paradigm shift from biblical doctrines to supposedly 'men-doctrines'.

The Holy Book(Bible) bears record as well that in the latter times(our present time and maybe futuristic time as well) that there would be a great departure from the truth.The Bible is always right on spot when it comes to predictions of events!This is one area I place much premium on the Bible(kindly permit my digression here!!

BTW:There are so many things we cannot get right in the present day Christendom because of the church structure/hierarchy.Anyway, we can only hope and pray for the mercy of God to locate us even in our errors!

That the trinity dogma is confusing and lacks human coherence is a known fact but one thing I might equally say that the Almighty God would most likely not condemn one for being a 'TRINITARIAN',given that our understanding of scriptures differ and of import is each individual's level of grace.

NB: I am not in anyway holding brief for the Almighty God.God forbid!Even at my present state, I am so unworthy to judge anyone based on what (s)he professes. Only the Creator of the living and the dead is righteous to pass judgement(s)

Methinks Pastor Adeboye got it all wrong if ever he made such a suggestion for religious leaders to be included as part of international arbitrators to Mid-East peace talks.

I do not equally believe we should crucify him(Pst Adeboye)based on what he felt should be done even though its not in tandem with the Bible. To me, Pst Adeboye is just as fallible as anyone of us irrespective of his position. No man is holy, we all err!

[b]BTW: Let us stop this idea of idolizing men. I find it most a times hypocritical for Christians in Nigeria to always quote "touch not mine anointed" even when a supposedly man of God does something wrong which totally contradicts what he professes.
The questions I would like to pose to such many a Christian in Nigeria are:

1.Who anointed such a pastor/bishop or whatever appellation that such a clergy bears in the first place? Hint:Do not rule out the fact that Satan can equally manifest as light(good).

2.Where you there when God did anoint the individual?

So many who call themselves men of God are out thereto feast on the ignorance and psyche of most Nigerians knowing fully our earnest desire to be rich overnight.

The Bible ought to be looked into more inwardly and not God's servants. Homage should be paid to servants of God AND NOT man-worship. After all, we are all human beings even though these 'special' servants are much more spiritually discerning so to speak!

Its always good for us to shift our attention/focus to the Creator of life. More so, when a man of God goofs, we should accept the fact that he is a man like us and most importantly say to him that he did err and we should counsel as well as pray for such a fellow.

As long as we put on this mortal body and exist on this present day earth, we are all liable to evil(s).

The truth remains that the Israeli feud with her neigbhours has always been there even prior to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and its a biblical prophecy.

More so, as much as we all crave for a peaceful society,there is a disconnect based on foretold events in the Bible.

A peaceful earth for now remains a mirage.Based on the Bible,peace on earth is only achievable when the Messiah would rule the earth for 1000 years and restore it(earth)to God's original plan and purpose.

Another twist to this post might be the need to ask if these religious universities are in anyway better than federal universities or even some state universities? Capital 'NO'

So many of these private universities lack educational quality and key learning infrastructures.

As 'lofty' and exorbitant as Covenant University(methinks its the best private university in Nigeria),its still not within the ilk of MAU(UNILAG),UI,UNIBEN, ABU, UNILORIN(quasi alma mater), OAU(alma mater),UNN,etc.

That the Nigerian educational system is in a comatose state does not mean that church funded(or other religious)universities should charge exorbitant school fees that are way beyond the reach of an average Nigerian let alone the poor in the villages.

What informs a church(or a religious organisation) to set up a church for 'business' profiteering? I would appreciate bible (or perhaps religious) scholars to show me any scriptures within any Holy Book that says churches(or religious bodies)ought to consider 'business' profits before altruism.

It beats my imagination that the same pool of offerings and tithes collected by churches are used in building these universities yet so many members cannot afford to send their kids to these same schools. What an irony! This is mere hypocrisy!

The Nigerian problem from my own understanding is more of a 'materialistic psyche' and it has found its ugly head in churches and other religious organisations.

Frankly speaking the materialistic psyche has not helped us as a nation and this is where I expected the church including other religious organisations to have acted but its rather unfortunate that the Nigerian church and other religious settings have fully accepted it as as a norm.

Between, our colonial masters and missionaries of old did leave with us so many great primary and secondary schools.

What is the Nigerian church bequeathing to millions of Nigerian children who cannot afford to go to school?

As at date, I am yet to see the quality in private university education in Nigeria.

Methinks, Nigerian church universities are short cuts to university certificates and suit the whims and caprices of the Nigerian elite while making the poor in the church 'poorer-mental and economical' and most ultimately increasing the wide gulf between the Nigerian rich and the poor in the society. This creates social and economic tension in the society due to 'high' class difference.

Need I remind you that most people(including Christians)in the Nigerian society would most likely be willing to trade off moral rectitude for corrupt practices, all in a bid to get their kids and wards into these private schools which are 'supposedly quality' universities.


Each time I ponder on this topic, I count it as a shame to the Nigerian church!Anyway, so many are impostors and not the true church of Christ.Christianity is all about giving with less attention to receiving. Hence, the church must be alive to her responsibilities to members within her fold and the Nigerian populace at large.

I see no reason why a church or a religious organisation that is not taxed (even if taxed)should charge 'high' and exorbitant tuition fees.

I am not against tuition fees but the pricing must be thoroughly looked at considering the poverty and squalor in the Nigerian state.

I am not oblivious of the fact that some churches award scholarship to indigent students to attend these universities and others,but the school fees are still beyond the reach of most Nigerians. It ought to be pegged down if the church and other religious organisations are willing to grow a dynamic Nigerian society.

Quality in education can always be gotten with the right mix of pricing, human capital, environmental factors, leadership, research, collaboration,etc.
