(A call to social reawakening)

Nigeria. A Country since inception that has been plagued with civil war, coups (which instigated dictatorial regimes), infrastructural decay and underdevelopment, corruption, bad governance and social degradation. The country has challenges which many read like a list of common problems in Africa: a non functioning democracy, freedom of speech or a lack of it, politics driven by ethnic chauvinism and biases along similar lines, lack of basic infrastructure, no accountability in government, defunct industries, a dilapidating educational sector and many more problems which serve as a hindrance towards genuine progress.

Such has been the fate of a country abundantly blessed with raw materials and people resources capable of lifting countries the world over out of poverty if properly utilised and yet the opposite has been the case with each iteration of government, seemingly sliding Nigeria further into the trenches of underdevelopment and retrogression.

A country that while rich in its diversity, in seeming unity lauds its social morality exemplified in principles like respect for elders, community living, social life and service, and strong family bonds of which the people are proud of.
A country rich in individuals of various professions who while underappreciated by the current Nigeria have been able to blossom and receive greater respect in the global sphere. We have writers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, business men and entrepreneurs that contribute their services the world over and yet still can’t boast of a home country that is worthy of respect attained through progress, development and national principles expressed in the quality and leadership of government.

Wherever Africans are present abroad a Nigerian is very likely to be close by. Whenever Nigerians meet it is very likely that the issue of Nigeria is brought up at some point, an issue which seems to inspire passion, heartbreak at the situation and a desire to see change and development as attains in more developed countries especially when these changes are mostly simple in true implementation while only requiring the genuine will to implement and actualise them. Whenever Nigerians meet such are the characters of their discourse and such are the questions asked by people who traverse the length and breadth of the nation. The simple truth is that we have all been collectively let down by the nation called Nigeria and over the various avenues which allow discussion and debates like internet forums, news papers, television broadcasting, radio and the like, one would find people debating on the issues of the nation time and time again while the nation continues on its path of degradation regardless of the quality of such discourses.

While the country is diverse in its union ranging from ethnic groups to religious affiliation, what seems unifying through all groups is the desire for development, the desire for change, the desire for a country to be proud of, a country to raise children in, a country with prospects, a country that can be a beacon of hope to Africa in terms of leadership, governance and development. Rather than letting a focus on what divides continue to stifle progress and development the belief is in allowing the desire for a better Nigeria unite as all. We have an opportunity each day to move beyond rhetoric, arguments and debates irrespective of how articulate, well debated or eloquent such are. We have the opportunity to instigate change and we can change the nation, we can work and act to bring about change in whatever capacity we are able to regardless of what field or profession we ply and regardless of our earning power, for change does not solely rely on such factors but on the genuine willingness to change and follow such desires with actions geared towards bringing about such positive change.

This is not a political party of any sort but a social movement. A social movement that seeks to bring about change in all strata of Nigeria which people are willing to contribute in. We invite and encourage all who want to contribute in whichever sector they are willing to contribute in. We welcome all who want to make an impact and we ask that all feel free for this is not about any one person but about the change we desire for Nigeria, this is not about any one person but about a people’s movement. This is a platform for working towards actualisations of set goals in whatever sphere anyone is interested in contributing in and in whatever capacity people are willing to contribute in to positively impact on Nigeria, we have the opportunity to act. This is not about being financially aggrandised but actions towards the greater good, not about power or egos but selfless service towards development. Democracy has being described as “government by the people, of the people, for the people”. What is sought is a reawakening of “the people”, you and I. Get involved and spread the word. Would you stand to be counted?

A citizen expresses dissatisfaction over lack of electricity for the past 4weeks.
400 people killed at religious riot. . . . etc

These are nothing new in regular headlines in today’s Nigeria. It has become the norm to see headlines of this sort. In fact, if a thread is made about these, it’ll not generate much debate as we as a nation are used to these headlines. However this is not what we (as Nigerians) want to come across on a regular basis.

It is still quite early into 2009 yet, most times I am sleep. I am very far away from Nigeria, yet all I can think about is my beloved motherland and the hellish habitation it has become! In a little less than 2 years, Nigerians will be celebrating or perhaps mourning the 50th anniversary of our moribund nation’s independence. On that day, like any other day, millions of Nigerian citizens will wake up and be confronted with the stark reality of a failed nation state!

Again, at 49, Nigeria cannot boast of 24hours of constant power supply for the past 48 years? Should we celebrate that our children are not going to school as a result of poverty, and those who managed to go and graduated are roaming around with no reasonable jobs to do? Are we happy that despite the nation’s abundant wealth, more people are dying from road accidents as a result of bad roads than other causes, and over 70% of the population is living below poverty lines? Are we going to be cerebrating that at 49, professionalism, efficiency, competency, proven track records, integrity etc, are always sacrificed on the alter of favouritism and sectional interest in appointments and placements in Nigeria?

We have waited and waited but the messiah is yet to show up. Is it not high time we take these responsibilities into our own hands? Is it not high time we make the people aware that there is no time for a novice?

Fellow Nigerians, we have come to you to seek your humble hands and loyalty in waking up this bride. There is no point trying to pass the buck. We are not waiting for America to come to our rescue because America have been aware of our troubling past already. We are not looking for publicity through the foreign media because we have enough of these. We are not looking for sympathy because that is not what we need. We (as founders) are not looking for public post because that sure would not take care of the main issue at hand.

That is why we have come together as citizens and formed the Nigerian Development Movement (NDM) and that is why we need me and you. This movement is about me and you. This is not a political institute neither are we a democratic revelry vying for a post at some in the Nigerian state.

What we want is justice for me and you. We want the ills of our dear nation to be taken care of. We want the public servant to be able to serve us with heart and might as in the Nigerian anthem. We want justice for the mild who cannot feed themselves as a result of inadequate distribution of wealth. We want our schools to be upgraded to what is fit for a living human being.

Excessive individualism and materialism are the bane of the Nigerian society. Economic woes are being passed on the helpless majority of the citizens who are now seen as the minorities. We need to start now, to save the face of our future generation.

It is good we are all trying to do something and I hope people understand the main goal is to do something positive for the Nigerians and in Nigeria as a whole.

U want to educate the youths in Northern Nigeria and stamp out begging, the governors and politicians would do all they can to stop u. These guys are their political thugs

U want to stop the importation of fake drugs, then get ready to do battle with Aba Mafia

U want to stop God-fatherism in our politics, then be prepared to war with the likes of OBJ, Annenih, Igbinedion etc

U want to rehabilitate the street urchins in Lagos, get ready to confront their god fathers in the senate and house of assembly

The country would continue in its present still of stagnancy unless fundamental issues are addressed. These issues would not be addressed by a development movement, hell no.

Or u think the likes Dimeji Bankole, Iyabo Obasanjo, Yar dua, Bukola Saraki, Igbinedion ect who like the idea of putting an end to pass me down ploitics (politics of having bad leadership passed on from father to son)?

The question then is what can be done? God knows I dont know, cos the problem with the country is multifarious and deep rooted.

Do we then fold our hands and watch as the country go on decaying? Answer is no.

As for me, I ll keep praying to my Maker for Divine intervention and keep inproving myself as much as possible and also help educate as many youth as i can. Maybe someday God would hear our cry and send down help.

Permit me, but i feel using challenges that are faced in the country as a means of concluding resignation to the problems is not addressing the problems. If such is the route you advocate then i am afraid we might as well forget about progress in Nigeria or a diversion from the status quo forever. Unless we are all willing to bank on waiting for all selfishly motivated and ineffective corrupt aspiring leaders dying and no one wanting to fill the vacuum the citizernry has left open and unchallenged all this time.

This is not about OBJ, this is not about Russia, this is not about such. This is about development for those who want it. We can all reach out to people who actually want help and we will do our best to provide assistance. This is about setting goals with regards to the changes we want to see in different sectors and planning and working to bring such goals to realisation through strategies specific to the different areas. Hence we can all partake in and contribute in our own various capacities or expertise. There are many people who want to contribute something that will bring about meaningful progress but don't know how. The work is ungoing, so stay tuned and please, again all are welcome.

The above suggestions are based on what I have read on here so far. It seems a good idea to throw our weight behind people we know can bring about change in Nigeria. We can make a difference by supporting people who are are passionate about making change happen in Nigeria, People who will do all in their power to make change happen in Nigeria.

We can act by supporting and voting for people who are committed to good governance in 2011!

I like this!

I like it more because of the fact that people can cling on and have faith in  something so broken and shattered. I like the fact that people can be so hopeful in the midst of this obvious impossibility. I like the enthusiasm with which B.O.S.S and Skyblue have presented their speeches.

I like it. I like it.

Just that it is bland and Large.It is so large that the impossibilities stare you in the face. It is so bland that the outlook can be so fatiguing!

But I like it. I like the hope [/b]and [b]enthusiasm [/b]of the two fellas and all the others that believe in this project!
Problem is [b]hope [/b]and [b]enthusiasm [/b]would only end on the pages of Nairaland.
They wont change Nigeria or the apathy of Nigerians. Online membership would not cut it.

[b]For your information, not too much more than a thousand nairalanders post on Nairaland and I'm guessing that less than 50 would care one inch about this post!
Which brings me to my point. If the goal is to get as many nairalanders append signatures, that wouldn't bring no change.

My suggestions!
Lets start now. Lets test ourselves immediately. Lets forget about changing the whole country immediately.
Lets just pick one project.
Maybe we can look for one primary school to renovate to international standards.Just one school!
Maybe we can try to revamp a dilapidated public library.
Or even start an Economic development Center in rundown neighbourhood- set a target of training/funding say 100 small scale entrepreneurs in 3 months.
Or help a village start an Agricultural revitalization program. Something we can measure its outcome soonest.
Raising funds for such causes is easy. There are formulas that can be applied and all the funding will be available.

And we don't need too much people. Just the twenty something people already signed up is enough.
What will be needed more is will. A will to expend your time, resources and intellect for what looks like a noble cause that we've been invited to embark upon.

Maybe, just maybe if we can succeed in one project, people will just believe and begin to join the cause.

So my suggestion is simple.
Lets use this initial pages to determine what project the few people that would be interested would embark upon.
Lets determine how to go about the project we get to choose. If we succeed, maybe, just maybe people will listen!

There are a million other little projects we can start to embark upon without much finance. The power to change starts small then begins to grow before it consumes and takes over its environment.

This might look stupid and unappealing, but hey. . .i thought you said we wanted to change Nigeria?

Your observations are correct, but DEMOCRACY is not supposed to be running along those lines. We have three options:
1) Peacefully enlighten our fellow Nigerians to practise Democracy the way it is meant to be practised. (I have just signed on for this, Xavier we need you on board)
2) Forcefully fight the currupt leaders. This will be bloddy, and looking back at history, I do believe that it will not sail through
3) Do nothing, and keep complaining. (Please do not take this option)

If people are enlighten and vote-in a house of Representative and Senate that is TRULLY fighting for the interest of the nation, (as is supposed to be in a Democratic government) there will be big changes within a very short time.

Imagine a Senate which is comprised of intelligent people that really wants to develop the nation, (by the way, the Senate can Democratically and peacefully question any of the leaders -including the president); do you think they will sit-back and watch all the stupid things that our leaders are doing?

I also want to assure you that Nigerians (both Big-Man, and Small-Man) will not do evil if they know that they will be held accountable. So all that we really need to do is try our possible best to ensure that no "My Surname is", "I have never done anything for the people in my lifetime, but trust me" politicians are elected into the House of Reps and the Senate. And the good thing is that election is sufficienly difficult to rig at this level, because we all know each other!!!

So get involved in Politics; if you cannot contest, ensure that the person that represent your constituency has brains in his/her skull and is interested in improving the nation.

This is simply awesome! I now have the belief that Nigeria will soon be better, we need professionals in every works of life to join the march, we need people who are connected to the outside media, newspapers etc

We also need advisers etc come on people lets do it.

Very very true and I'm happy you've at least shown an interest. There are some people I believe are very original and true whom I could beat my chest to trust on Nairaland (though I’ve not met them physically) and fortunately for me you are one of the guys. And this is not me trying to patronise you.

I believe if we have you on board, we’ll get somewhere. We are very much aware of what’s going on. We have been holding some meetings. We’ve been forming and at the same time storming to the point of testing each others’ patience. This is expected and to be candid, we’ve had a conference (though online) and devoted more than 6hours of our time already.

We are aware of the huge mountain we’re trying to climb. We know we are just like eggs trying to break Olumo rock, we know we’re like the Satan trying to get into heaven but what we for sure know is that we have the drive that’ll never fail us. We are not just talking and this is not a virtual campaign. As soon as we are able to get our basics right, we would get out there.

We are not planning coups and neither are we planning the kidnap of a public figure. We want to do more for our dear nation and think about this, if we can only do one thing right, we believe we’ve achieved our goals. Try and join us at least for one of our meetings and there you’ll see our seriousness. We have the tenacity, the drive, the doggedness and I think the more of us, the merrier and in actual fact, the better for the organisation.

@Papabrowne, very interesting points raised but at thesame time you might have been quick to make some assumptions. The scope of the movement is beyond nairaland and beyond the web. You only have to look as far as nigeriavillagsquare (an online forum) and have a look at what projects have been undertaken there to understand that things can be achieved if we work together. Again our scope is beyong that too. We have reached out to the forum mentioned, reached out to people on face book and other forums and sites. The idea is to get people aware first and see who is in or out. We are planning an online conference on sunday. This is just the beggining and works have been going on behind the scenes. We are determined to work to bring about change and your suggestions fall into the scope too. The idea is to raise awareness first. Stay tuned to the development and thanks for your interest.

By the way, I like your ideas. I feel this is what we could lay down on the table and come Sunday, we'll discuss (as soon as we get the serious ones among us) and lay your idea on the table. No idea is a bad idea remember.

Lets start now. Lets test ourselves immediately. Lets forget about changing the whole country immediately.
Lets just pick one project.
Maybe we can look for one primary school to renovate to international standards.Just one school!
Maybe we can try to revamp a dilapidated public library.
Or even start an Economic development Center in rundown neighbourhood- set a target of training/funding say 100 small scale entrepreneurs in 3 months.
Or help a village start an Agricultural revitalization program. Something we can measure its outcome soonest.
Raising funds for such causes is easy. There are formulas that can be applied and all the funding will be available.

And we don't need too much people. Just the twenty something people already signed up is enough.
What will be needed more is will. A will to expend your time, resources and intellect for what looks like a noble cause that we've been invited to embark upon.

Maybe, just maybe if we can succeed in one project, people will just believe and begin to join the cause.

So my suggestion is simple.
Lets use this initial pages to determine what project the few people that would be interested would embark upon.
Lets determine how to go about the project we get to choose. If we succeed, maybe, just maybe people will listen!

There are a million other little projects we can start to embark upon without much finance. The power to change starts small then begins to grow before it consumes and takes over its environment.

This might look stupid and unappealing, but hey. . .i thought you said we wanted to change Nigeria?

Actually this particular thread has been up since yesterday if you look at the top, and the planning for it started on saturday. Work has been going on to raise awareness about it and their is already a facebook page, i have posted invites on nigerianvillagesquare and the wind of change site. Sam Milla has posted the intro speeches and invites on his forum. I am seeing if it is possible to post an actual article on the villagesquare. We are dedicated to this project and i don't want anyone to feel that this is being taken lightly because apart from getting people here it also vital that this movement is sustainable. There have been so many "movements" or groups geared towards "change" and some have just lasted for a few days. There have been meetings on saturday, sunday and there would be meetings today. These meetings are necessary in order to set the ball rolling. There is a planned conference on sunday whereby absolutely everyone is invited and I shall post the details of the conference as well as the arrangements shortly.

@papabrowne rose very good points and again, these have been considered and yet again I feel it has to be said that this is being taken seriously because we all know what we have gotten ourselves into. If you read what has been posted and proposed by B.O.S.S and myself you would see that focusing on projects like building or fixing up a school falls into the scope of the movement. How does such fall into the scope you might ask? A different direction would simply fall into different sections/areas to focus on. The goal is changing Nigeria for the better and as someone aptly stated the main arguements will simply be on how such positive change is achieved. If certain people feel that working towards the realisation of the FOI bill is the way they want to impact positively then they can work with others of such interest on such a venture by setting out strategies based on the set goals of that area. The movement will support and accomodate all ideas and sectors that are geared towards positive impact and development in Nigeria.
If someone else feels building schools and improving the lives of people through executing projects of any kind in Nigeria, again that is simply a different sector and the movement will support that hence it would be a matter of coordinating different areas and where possible making areas compliment each other.

If we would have only 20 people on sunday's conference then that is fine, we will work with that while all the time focus on raising further awareness. There is actually someone in charge of raising awareness while we also try to do such in our own way. All the points raised and critisicms in whatever form were anticipated because we know what we got ourselves into. I keep using the word we and I feel I have to clear the air. The vision of this movement has been stated and part of that vision is including everyone. For this is not my vision or B.O.S.S's but a vision that belongs to millions of Nigerians. A vision of working towards a better Nigeria. The meetings I speak of are necessary not because certain individuals seek power or seek to put their "stamp" on this vision, but because organisation, coordination and direction is required, hence you can see us as a necessary evil. This is the movement of the people who want to change Nigeria in whatever capacity they see fit and in whatever contribution. You are all welcome because this vision belongs to you and I.

@BOSS and Sky Blue, as a South African I applaud this initiative,There are 160 million of Nigerians and if only 5%can be part of this movement the goverment and those in charge will take note .My advise will be for you guys NDM to be visible to the masses who are mostly not that educated,let members of NDM donate their time to schools by teaching when they are free or go to the hospitals,clinics or communities to help out.In other words do something for free,so that the masses can differentiate you from the current leaders and trust can be build.Nigeria deserve better,power to the people.

Thanks a lot. Point taken. We shall include that in our agenda when we hold our conference very soon. However feel free to contribute fresh ideas from time to time.

There is a planned general conference on Sunday 15th of February, 7pm Nigerian time and 6pm UK time, 1pm New York time (you can work out the time relating to your zone). Absolutely all are welcome to join.

ARRANGEMENTS:

A list of subject areas to address would be posted on this thread. Anyone who has suggestions of other subject areas they would like to see should raise them. Some people might be highly specialised in certain areas and their inputs are welcome. Now we have to take into account that some areas might be similar or that the topics might be too many with respect to the number of people that show interest (you don't want to be in a room on your own). Hence by thursday, final topics to be addressed will be selected.

Next it is up to you and your imagination is required. Imagine a conference centre with lots of lecture rooms and each lecture room holding a different conference or meeting. Such is equivalent to the different topics. The different topics are going to be hosted in different online chat rooms, this means if you want to be in the room that relates to the topic you are interested in then you have to signify and hence book your place by notifying us on this thread or through email - kinre2002@yahoo.com. A link for registration to the forum were the different rooms are going to be hosted and discourse held would be sent to you. This means you have to "book" your place in the room you want before sunday.

MEETING

The meetings in each room would follow a similar format. There would ba a coordinator that keeps the order, and a main speaker. The main speaker presents what is actually 'on the ground' in Nigeria with regards to the subject (hence a lot of work, research and study is required). Hindrances to development, obstacles etc are going to be outlined, goals are going to be set and strategies proposed. During all of this, everyone refrain from chatting please. Again this is necessary to keep order and keep the meet organised and hence progressive, we can't have everyone speaking at thesame time. Next, people will have the opportunity to contribute. Everyone is adviced to make their contributions concise and to the point of what they want to say, etc. You can contribute anything at all and all contributions are welcome, ideas, contacts or people you might know, your own take on how such goals are going to be met, etc. Again the 'contributions' are going to be organised. The order of people in the chat room is going to be displayed like in normal chat room conferences. The order you appear is the order in which contributions are going to be taken, so again people are asked to refrain from contributing when it isn't their turn. If we finish one cycle and people still have contributions the cycle is started again. IIf anyone has any questions or anything extra to say they can signify and leave it at that. The coordinator will then call people with more to say by id names and such will contribute. The coordinator will be available to coordinate the session and maintain order.

This set up makes it a bit tricky to be part of more than one room although it might still be possible, and if you are like me, you might have serious plans and contributions to more than one area. At the end of the conference, the basic strategies and outcomes of all the discussions would be posted on nairaland and other sites. The aim is to continuously keep people updated and what is going on and what has been achieved. Again, all are welcome.

Your sceptisism is completely understood so I will not take your post as an insult even if it probably implies such. One could argue that many of these ventures have come before, they have failed, people have "sold out", etc. Completely understandable. Nigerians have a general right to be jaded and sceptical about any good development and I believe that government should always work with this in mind. Nigerian governments should be careful when they ask people to be patient, should not be offended when people are sceptical and non chalant about nice sounding speeches or the latest cacth phrase in town. Such are meaningless if not backed up with solid effort towards bringing aspirations, etc into realisation. Nigerians have earned the right to be sceptical to change and hope.

This as I have continuously stated is not about one person, this is not about any of us. Hopefully this approach of the citizens working towards solving problems together and standing up for change will become more adopted by Nigerians and that is why effort has been made to make this as open as possible. Momentum is sought so that this quickly gets to a stage that if all people (God forbid) die tomorrow this thing will continue. There is no exclusivity or restraint and people from all different sites as well as people in real life have been asked to come so that we can join heads together and move the nation forward, so that we can join hands together and bring about positive change, development and impact in Nigeria. People have decided that they want to go beyond posting "commentary" on forums and websites, people have decided that they want to move beyond just talking and having an "idealogy" and backing all such up with strategised actions with others towards changing the situation in Nigeria in whatever capacity they can. People who don't buy this or think its a sham are expected but the focus is unwavering. All are welcome

The Nigeria will only develop when the fundamental problems have been solved and the problems can never be solved until those who can provide the solutions are benefiting from chaos and those not benefiting are only crying foul so that they can get their share of the benefit. Welcome to Nigeria!
