How can? You miscreants sold our electricity distribution companies to yourselves like Ikeja Electric and Eko Electric and are charging us exorbitant prices. You come dey whine our nipples for news. How can you compare to some countries like USA that use not-for-profit organisations to distribute electricity so as to maintain healthy competition. |

Salaries also cheapest in the world. How can government pay low low salaries but expect citizens to pay high electricity bills? In Nigeria, monthly electricity bill is more than earned salaries. I pay N10k a month electric bill. 10k is more than what majority Nigerian youths are earning a month. Overseas, people are paid $1 per hour or N800 per hour if converted to Naira. Are Nigerian young boys and girls paid N800 per hour? Certainly No. 1 Like |

Yampotatocarrot: I guess it's because they want them to constantly recharge, since they won't be getting any irregular bills but the areas without prepaid meter even without light can get over estimated bills and they'll still have to pay after month end, they have no choice and when they eventually get the prepaid meter, they'll be ask to pay out of the old bills every month before they recharge the prepaid. |

GeneralPula:I used to live inside the Redemption camp in Mowe. There’s stable electricity in the camp- at least for 97% of my 2-year residence there. 30k recharge on my prepaid meter takes 5months. I bought a unit for N35. Same electricity in the UK. I pay at least £90/month. 1 Like |

I find the topic of this article laughable. The issue here is NOT the cost of electricity in Nigeria but the problem is that you're paying for something that you're NOT getting. 1 Like |

Thinking about my discussions on this site, I recall one argument I had with a Nairalander on this site, who opposed government subsidy removal for petrol, and then advertised his business I advised him to offer his product at a reduced price, he became angry (lol). When I pointed out that he was supporting fuel marketers selling petrol at a loss, he hit back with the argument that it was a 'public service'. Apparently his was not (lol). The thing Nigerians do not get is that you need a profit to run things well. Take GSM. GSM companies were allowed to charge whatever they wanted, and in the first 2-3 years, service was BAD. Very awful. Even home internet was not possible with GSM (it was dialup then VSAT we was using....now things have changed). Yet we paid up the high prices with a lot of complaining...and the GSM companies made a lot of profit.....which they then reinvested in domestic growth, and things started improving from 2003 onwards. The kind of 'schizophrenic' thinking I see from Nigerians when it comes to power supply is funny. On the one hand they want good power supply before they pay full price, on the other hand they want the power companies to keep charging cheap prices, below the cost of production. And somehow they expect power to be miraculosly good on those terms. Challenge them on that...they will claim poverty, and claim that everyone is on minimum wage (the concept of minimim wage is so misused on this site...while it is true that many people are not paid well, most of us are not on minimum wage whatsoever)...and so the suffering continues. The truth is, it is going to cost far more money than we make as a nation to fix power. 30 billion naira per annum according to a team of experts. Maybe more. It cost the GSM companies a lot of money to build the stuff they needed to give us servicies such as home internet, and so forth, and they took most of it from our pocket, and government did nothing.....and today GSM provides lots of jobs and so on for the counrty. Even income self. All because they charged high prices. It kind of makes me feel sad, the way Nigerians expect to be riding ferraris at the cost of a 1999 toyota. Lord knows the real world does not work like that. You demand cheap prices, cheer when power defaulters use violence to chase away DISCO workers...and then the DISCOS do not make enough money, and then you blame them for not giving you enough power.....like how do people think. Point the schizoid thinking behind that, you are an oppressor, or a Tinubu supporter (lol). And yet, if they ran their businesses the way they want DISCOS to run , they would be broke within minutes. Most of them don't want to even help the poor by selling at low prices. As for me, either we pay market price for power, or we accept that we can never have 24 hour power in our lifetimes. Time we stopped lying to ourselves. I'm done arguing. 1 Like 1 Share |

Which light wey this people dey talk about. So they expect us to pay high in the darkness we are staying. When they try bring this light, it is of no use because even phone you know fit charge. Why are they comparing to countries that enjoy and are celebrating years of uninterrupted power supply. Am not sure God created our politicians, because their heart too dark. 1 Like |

nairalanda1: You're one of the few that understands the issues. It's amazing how Nigerians WITNESSED the transformation of cement, banking and telecoms and still REJECT the application of such reforms to education, electricity, fuel and other sectors. It has to be some form of mass delusion, right? It's the culture. Nigerians are now a fundamentally socialist people. There's no reasoning that can cut through the greedy hopes of getting something for nothing and getting it without suffering or privations. Good Luck to Nigerians. 1 Like |

In Nigeria, people pay for electricity they did not consume. A flat without deep freezer or fridge or air-conditioner or any other heavy gadgets pays about 13,000 naira monthly. Power only comes at night with a little dose of about 3hrs during day time. Give people prepaid metre, NO. They force light on them whenever the Discos like, even if consumers don't want it at the time. Nigerian electric power supply is very exploitative. Let people manage their own use of power by themselves, NO WAY. You must impose it on them with a threat of disconnection. |

seguno2:You cracked me up I must say😅 Obvious reasons man…if you think I’m complaining about my bills here, you are wrong. I’m just validating the fact that electricity is indeed very cheap in Nigeria- nothing more. To why people “go to pray at redemption camp and prematurely sell their inheritance”😅 to Japa… you might want to do a personal research on that one. |
