Get a tape rule. Invite her before the date, when she's asleep you'll use the tape rule to measure her finger.

Simple. When she's asleep, get a thread or a small rope and run it round her ring finger.
With that, you'll get her ring measurement.

Modified: Since she lives in a different state from you, if you're buying a gold ring, you can request for the one that's slightly cut in-between. Don't buy the one that's completely round.

When buying the ring, tell the seller that you don't know your woman's exact ring size, that Incase the one you buy don't fit her, you will come back with her to pick another after the engagement. The ring seller will permit it, so Incase it doesn't fit her, you will go back together to pick the right size.
