@Tayeni
I've noticed over 80% of poultry farmers here r into layers. why d low interest in broilers. I know they always target festive periods but pple still eat chicken in between these periods now.abi? A trip to a frozen foods shop is a proove. Am I just being naïve?

Poor market for Broilers plus high mortality rate.

ussyman: Hello guys below are some of the our farm LIVE statistics that I promised to send when our birds reach the point of lay.

* Total no of day-old bought: 514
* Total no of birds at point of lay(POL): 503
* Total no of brooding months: 5 months
* Total operating cost: N593,560
* Total fixed cost: N469,360
* Total no of feeds used to the POL(bags): 167
* Total cost of feeds: N342,320 (60% of operating cost)
* Total cost of medication(vaccination,med,& Vit): N69,280 (12% of operating cost)
* Total weight of feeds consumed per bird at POL: 8.2KG
* Total cost of birds at POL: N1,260 (inclusive of 10% fixed cost, prorated)

I hope this would go along way to help new prospective farmers with an idea on the setup.

I want to say hi to all my friends on this blog especially Jides, Steel5800, Omotiti, Marco-p and the rest.

This is truely a successful journey for another member on this thread.
Pls accept my hearthy congratulations Ussyman. I'm really happy for you.
Thank you for the well documented statistics.

8.2kg up to POL? I'm wondering if that was not too much. Or was there a lot of feed wastage since you are doing deep litter? I compared notes with another farmer who suggested maximum 5.2kg per bird up to POL.

My mini farm project is doing very well. The birds are in their 8th weeks now, and on growers feed at 9.5kg feed per day for the 200 birds.
Mortality=3. Number in stock=200.
Thanks to you for sharing information with us right from the beginning. It was really a useful guide.

I trust you are planning towards caging cos it remains the best option for optimum production.

See you at the top.

I thing the issue with our people is that we like to follow the band wagon, Someone here has made a good case for Layers and the egg business and that is where everyone is going to now. It is about packaging, I live in the Lekki area, imagine that how many eateries in that stretch or road i.e restaurants, hotels bukas, and just small mom and pops you can sell live chicken to. My guess is that average restaurant or buka can use up 5 whole chicken per day, now imagine if you can please your chickens five each in about 20 outlets, that will equals 100 birds per day, that will also mean about 3000 birds per month. Now lets say you make about N800 profit from each bird, that will come to about N2.4 million/month. NOT sales just profit.

Now if you will not be just a follower, think about the industry and package your product and be different. You can still make a killer in the broiler part of the business. Couple years ago, I ran into a lady that own two Mr. Bigs franchise in Lagos, and according to her, she sells 50 bird daily in each of her stores. Now this is just one client and just two outlets. You will be scrambling to meet her demand not to talk about trying to get more clients. So my friend the "field is white in all parts and ready to harvest" You just got to know how.

Good luck.

I have not started yet but hoping to start soon. I have other projects that is keeping me super busy now, I go back and forth, I just came back again to the country last week Monday, will be here for couple month and go back home again to hang out with the family.

Tell me, how much is a kg of chicken now, I know some of the cost of production has gone up. When I ran my research, it cost me less than N600 to raise the birds to 3kg from day old without the use of any medication and no any growth boost. And the N600 is even inclusive of the management and the depreciation of the fixed cost. So how much is the cost of a kg this days and for those already in the business raising their birds, what is the estimate cost to raise them to 3kg or any kg?

Thanks

Bro! I'll like to know how you can raise a 3kg broiler with #600, bearing in mind that a day old broiler is now btwn 170-200, and a bag of starter is around #2550.

Hi guys,

Is there any broiler farmer left out there to help me with my challenge?

Quite a number of my broiler chicks are having leg problems. Six of them are now lame from a batch of 50, though I decided to quarantine them when I noticed so their peers don't step on them. That decision has made them survive till now.

Can anyone help with one or two drugs that can help? I use Boar feeds...

I use to encounter the same challenge, it is usually due to calcium or phosphorus deficiency. I'll advice you change your feed or you add calcium or phosphorus supplement(usually from when the chicks are day old). You can try a supplement called asbona

Marco-P, thank you very much for the support & concern.

However, I doubt if 5.2KG per bird could be possible at all. The minimum I saw in one foreign site was 7.4KG per bird to POL. I also believe using battery cage system would reduce wastage drastically, but not as low as 5.2KG.

We are thinking of using cages in the near future.

Thanx.

Biafran Soul, Sorry ooo I never said that I am a farmer, go back to all my post, i said that I ran a research and I shared my result with some people here. I come here to learn so that when I am ready to start my own farm I would have learn and know where to go to in order to get what I need. This tread is full of great people giving great ideas.

This is not a tread where you attack each other. I have not tried to sell you anything or to take anything from you, lets show respect to each other as we all try to learn from one another.

What is the essence of raising the hope of other people only to tell them you are not sharing the formula. Abeg allow people indeed willing to help to have their say. You raised chicken with N600:00. Definitely not in this time and age. If you got some things for free, get the market value of the inputs instead of misleading people.

miqos02: guy, cool down, this guy never raised any ones hope, he only shared his experience, i think people got it wrong when he said he had cost analysis documented, he did not promised to share any formula

Thank you @miqos02 for coming to my aid. I never promised, a lot of people asked for the cost analysis and I emailed it to them and not the formula, Some even asked to buy from me and I told them that not at this time, that I will like to use my findings a a large scale before I can even think of bottling and selling it or I will just keep it as my competitive advantage in the industry. So I am not raising anybody's hope up. Those that I sent the cost analysis that I did as asked them to adjust it to their need has sent emails and said that it was helpful, definitely not a solution but a guide. I ran my research couple years ago, and then fuel price was N65, so all this changes need to be factored into the processes now.

Thank you again for your understanding

A have a layer population of 4,000 birds. They started laying eggs about 2 weeks ago at an average of 12 eggs per day. Is it normal?

kellykelly: A have a layer population of 4,000 birds. They started laying eggs about 2 weeks ago at an average of 12 eggs per day. Is it normal?

There is no cause for alarm. It is normal, production will continue to increase until they stabilize in laying, if you get every other thing right.

By the way, you failed to mention their age. You are not suppose to give them layers feed until they attain about 20% - 30% production. You gradually introduce them to layers mash by mixing it with growers mash for about 2 weeks.

4,000 birds farm is really quite big. you can share your rearing experience/challenges/feed consumption/costs/etc with us on this tread so we can learn. What is the dimension of your pen? Are your birds in cages or deep litter?

Congrats.
