This is the best news have heard this year after the fight against Ebola. I am in total support of this..
.
The House of Representatives moved on Tuesday to contain the “arbitrary” subscription rates charged by Multichoice for its Digital Satellite Television services in the country.

The House observed that high pricing by Dstv had made access to its “premium” programming ‎difficult for the majority of Nigerians.
It also noted that lack of competition in the digital satellite broadcast industry had encouraged a monopoly, giving firms like Multichoice the “undue advantage” of blocking the efforts of other firms to enter the market and crash prices.
Lawmakers particularly opposed a “rigid” subscription policy that permanently billed subscribers “whether they are at home viewing programmes or not.”
A bill to stop such stranglehold on the industry passed second reading at the House on Tuesday.‎
The bill, which was sponsored by a member from Ada‎mawa State, Mrs. Aisha Dahiru-Modibbo, sought to amend the National Broadcasting Commission Act to guarantee openness and competition in the industry.
The long title of the bill reads, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the National Broadcasting Commission Act to Provide for Competition in Nigeria, to Promote Efficiency and Expand Opportunities for Participation of Nigerians in World Markets, while at the same time Recognising ‎the Role of Foreign Competition in Nigeria and for other Matters Related thereto.”
Leading the debate on the bill, Dahiru-Modibbo said while Nigeria was not against foreign participation in the local economy, such involvement should not be to the detriment of Nigerians.

SA coys milking Nigerians since time immemorial.

btw, I sincerely observed that welfarist policies are always sponsored by Northerners. Yaradua brought down petrol price to 65naira after a southerner hiked it from 12naira to 75naira over 8years period.
Abacha maintain fuel price during his own time. A southerner hiked from 65naira to 144naira within 2years in power but reversed after his government was threatened.

A southerner raised vat to 10% at d twilight of his administration but a northerner revised it.

Roads in d north are better cos an average northerner is interested in his people. in civil service, northerners promotes their kins even if he doesn't merit but a southerner remains at a grade level over 15years due to wickedness of his fellow southerners.

I'm a Southerner of the east but I sincerely observed that we are our bane here in the south.

Another reasonable policy if implemented, just like that of high tarrif on vehicle importation.

It'll be best if thy can force the mulitchoice to charge as used, rather than the monthly subscription that expires after a month.

Competitors emerged but they couldn't withstand the market pressure as well as buy rights to some foreign channels and programmes.

What will the government also do in this regard to make sure that others like HITV, CONSAT, StarTimes, etc. get these rights and also broadcast what people will be happy to pay for and watch just as DSTV is doing.

For someone like me who loves football in particular and sports in general, the best choice is DSTV because of their dedicated sports channels. If only others can beef up this aspect and a little more in other aspects, then, I don't see why we will have to give it all to the SA company

My People are f0ols, and f0oled by the Old thieving Politicians. How many Nigeria got TV talkless of getting a Digital Cable? Wake up People. They didnt do it for you and me, they did it for themselves because it bitten them individually. They spend Millions to acquire TV and the only channels they watch is the foreign one, so they particularly know the price of these subscriptions. How many of them have gone to the market to inquire about the Price of 1 Cup of Garri. And who needs "TV" when Garri have disappeared from the Table? I must eat before I watch TV. One they did leaving the other left undone because they live in world of profligacy, sleaze, looting and stashing in hard currencies. I am currently reviewing my decision to vote GEJ next year

A start is to make it mandatery that only Nigerian dishes should have the right to view top foreign league sports in Nigeria.

There should also be a reasonable amount that any foreign dish displaying Nigerian movies(nollywood) must remit to the industry.

These are the two main reasons(nollywood & sport) Nigerians go for DSTV

I don't know how possible that is, but I'm sure no foreign organization is above our law when within our shores.

CONSAT joins Nigerian pay-TV sector, adds FilmBox to channel roster
Details
Rebecca Hawkes
| 20 June 2014
Nigeria's latest pay-TV platform Continental Satellite Limited (CONSAT) has this week marked its official launch in Lagos and added seven channels from SPI International to its satellite bouquet.

SPI International channels FilmBox, FilmBox Arthouse, FightBox, DocuBox, FashionBox, Fast&FunBox and 360 TuneBox are now available to CONSAT TV subscribers in Nigeria, as well as in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

The MPEG4-based digital TV platform currently carries around 50 channels, and hopes to double this figure by 2015.

CONSAT, which is owned by former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is seeking to offer satellite TV for middle and low income earners, by allowing subscribers to only pay for the channels they want to watch.

"As a consequence of (the) digital migration and the lead up to 2015, it is clear that the number of households that require a decoder will grow considerably. Currently, there are about two million active subscribers in Nigeria, yet we have in excess of 20 million homes," said Mayokun Okunola, CEO, CONSAT.

"We truly appreciate CONSAT's mission to respond to the growing needs of Nigerians to offer a common platform for digital TV transmission and we are very proud to deliver our unique and top quality line-up of TV channels to CONSAT subscribers," said Berk Uziyel, executive director, Filmbox International.

Addy Awofisayo, director of content, CONSAT, added: "Our content providers are very passionate; we plan on developing our own content. It is our mandate to air contents from Nigeria and take it across the world; we will continue to invest in content."

The CONSAT decoder is available for NGN14,999 (US$92) with a two-month free subscription and free installation. Its channels are broadcast across the region from Eutelsat's 16° East orbital slot.

Dstv is a monopoly because they understand their business terrain more.
Crashing Dstv prices will make them bigger and blow the smaller guys out of the water.

For the guy who said it's sports, remember Hitv had the EPL rights for 3 years but that did not stop Dstv.

God bless you.

What the reps failed to understand is, everyone has his market share based on their financial strength. Making DstV cheaper is automatically death sentence for the others. By the way, don't we have 1,500 subscription on DstV already?

Will somebody tell this man to STFU...
An average Nigeran owns a television set and some even go ahead to get either STARTIMES or GOtv just to have a feel of more entertainments. They would av prefered DSTV,but the subscription cost is just to much for an average income earner...
Infact this bill is for the poor man's advantage coz members of the NASS av enuf money to even subscribe for a whole year...instead of you to applaud them for this one,you are here spewing thrash...

BTW,wat does GEJ av to do with this...
