Time for safety discussions and lessons.

Question 1: In what ways can a person be injured by vehicle related accidents at work?

Question 2: Mention ways of controlling the risk of vehicle related accidents in the work place.

Like you know, hazards vary with the type of industry and the OPs. Having said this,
1. For a Tobacco and allied companies like some brewing coys: Excessive inhalation of the raw raw materials can cause drowsiness, workers could become disoriented and find it difficult to either be effective in driving or adhere strictly to safety rules by keeping off the paths of moving vehicles particularly forklift.
2. Prolonged working hours will also make workers susceptible to vehicular accidents
3. Excessive movements also increase the risk of exposure to vehicular accidents
4. Loading and Offloading of vehicles, if done without proper adherence to safety procedures could expose workers to vehicular accidents.
The list is endless... It is generally a function of studying the activities and identifying the various hazards that may be associated with them.

I guess, the above options can be easily controlled... For example.. For workers working with intoxicating substances, exposure to such could be limited, first by providing effective PPEs and second by introducing a shift plan.
The shift plan would also work for number 2. For 3. Movements should be done only when necessary and more than one person should convey raw materials or products as the case may be. A safety officer could monitor loading and offloading activities to ensure compliance to sound safety practices.

Your main job is to carefully inspect activities, identify hazards, assess risks and proffer solutions.

Nice try... But remember the question 1 says mention ways a person could be injured, not causes of accidents. So we need to mention types of vehicle accidents that could cause injury.

Question 2 is about proffering solutions in order to prevent and reduce transport related accidents at work.

Everyone is free to contribute. We will learn a lot here. All safety officers and intending safety officers are welcome to contribute.

Q2. Eliminating the need to reverse by implementing one way drive systems and provision of turn circles (U-turn)
-Provision of designated walkways for pedestrians with clear markings and barriers.
-Ensuring pre-use checks and inspections of vehicles to avoid any form of mechanical failure (Breaks failure)
-Encouraging of high visibility clothing in work place as this aids drivers to spot pedestrians easily
-Installations of alarm systems and bacon lights or use of banksmen. these aids bring consciousness to unsuspecting vehicles and pedestrians especially while reversing
-Zero tolerance of drug and alcohol level while driving within the workplace ( prescribed drugs with ability to impair senses or cause dizziness inclusive, such as codeine )
- determining, implementing and enforcing safe speed limits within the workplace
-Proper inhouse driving trainings should be given to all likely drivers within the workplace.

There are several topics you can use as project topic.....Topics are outlined in most institute..Mine was Fire prevention and control....By His grace we have grown beyond that...Just pick area of interest... You can work on Waste Management....Confined Space..... Workplace shift schedule..... d shift schedule is nt among their list bt if u can work on it you wil eat from it....If we all can put our heads together we can begin to develop Mathematical model to solve occupational non-fatal injury.....have you ever thought of using Poisson distribution to extimate the probability of accident occuring in an industry?

Great feat you have achieved over there; I am proud of you.

I do not think it should be so difficult for you to relocate to and practice in Nigeria.

However, what's up with that place? From experience, no body has it all. May be there are certain things you are not comfortable with over there; there are also things you wouldn't be comfortable with here.
Until one becomes self employed, there is every tendency that one would switch jobs or even countries; so, you can launch out. Visit the websites of the construction firms in Nigeria and apply.

Be that is it may, I saw this link on nairaland, kindly help some guys if you can.

Hi, Check ur mail. Feel free to share with others.

@House. The ISPON act is a welcome development. HSE in Nigeria needs to be regulated. However, I believe the law invalidates other training centers and this isn't encouraging.

You see, training centers like charkins, falckprime, finny intergrated services, SGS and a host of others are better poised than ISPON to deliver specialized HSE courses. Don't forget safety also spans to maritime safety, construction safety, industrial safety, food safety and so on- these are fields ISPON don't have the technical know- how to handle at the moment. What they need to do is adopt the NEBOSH approach- register centers as course providers and regulate the contents and examinations. Also it wouldn't hurt to affiliate with bodies such as OPITO and IRCA.

Another issue that would rear its head soon is ISPON asking intending members to undertake the General HSE and HSE level 3 courses irrespective of the fact that one may hold a NEBOSH IGC course or have field experience with top level certifications. Haba! It's like asking a graduate to repeat primary one. They ought to make provisions for people who may have undergone these trainings in other institutes prior to now. Even IIRSM and IOSH accept their membership from holders of NEBOSH or equivalent certifications. I'd advice ISPON adopts the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) model.

It's a new law but might be needing an ammendent soon. I'm sipping my zobo and watching events unfold.

please can you help me with the materials too. thanks. o
