A wonderful day to you, my wife happens to be a greencard holder which she got through the last DV. A friend of hers applied on her behalf as single and we have two kids together. how can we join her in the US?

Greetings! So she went as single even though she was married with children? She should never have received the Diversity Visa. Failing to list your spouse and children on the original DV entry is an automatic disqualification.

I applied for a B1/B2 VISA in 2011 and my passport was said to be not qualified to be used for the application so,i was asked to get another one. I claimed I knew no one at that time and when I applied again an agent which I employed his services prepared my documents and got someone to invite me ,claiming that he is my uncle . That same application was denied even though i answered all questions asked. I have applied again and was refused because I couldn't give details of my claimed relative in the US. What can I do to come clean regarding the false information I gave about the uncle of mine I never had living in the US because something tells me its on that basis am been consistently refused

Probably not. Right now immigration officials are focusing on illegal immigrants who committed crimes in the United States, not on illegal immigrants who adjusted status fraudulently. But, frankly, if someone did pursue action against her, they would be acting within the law.

She can go ahead and file an I-130 for her spouse and children. As long as you have a bona fide relationship with her, you'll eventually receive a visa. But we will likely be very skeptical, given that when she went to the U.S. she claimed under oath that she was single and had no children.

A quick one here, heard someone was refused K1 visa because he said he paid dowry during their engagement ceremony, and the visa officer says that shows that the marriage was paid for, and as such fraud is detected. Could this be true in an African context, thought paying dowry was part of the engagement culture?

It depends on the tribe and the local custom. If a bride price is paid under conditions such that it constitutes customary marriage, and the couple is then considered married to each other and would need a divorce to become free to marry someone else, then yes, we consider the couple married by Nigerian law and custom, and they are not eligible for the K-1 (fiance) visa. We know that some tribes consider payment of a dowry part of the betrothal rather than of a marriage, though.

I would also add that if someone comes in for a K visa, refers to the petitioner as "my husband" throughout the interview; shows plenty of photos that she describes as "our traditional marriage"; describes the payment of the bride price including the envelope of money, the suitcases full of clothes, and all the yams; is wearing a wedding ring in the photos; and also has a document in her possession referring to herself as Mrs. Petitioner's Surname, we are likely going to weigh that as stronger evidence than the petitioner telling us it was really only an engagement ceremony.

Hi Visa Officer,

Someone introduced me to this page. You are doing a great job,i must say. Welldone!

I am about to apply for a visa to attend a summit in Las Vegas in June.

The issue is that my passport carries my maiden name, i also use my maiden name in my workplace and all my official documents carry my maiden name. I have been married since April 2010 with a son and i have my marriage certificate to prove it.

The summit is all paid for by my company, tickets and accommodation included and documents are available to substantiate my claims.

I want to know if this could hinder my chances of getting a visa.

Thanks in anticipation.

But at engagement i shared an engagement ring with my fiance that i still wear till today, does this also constitute marriage? wow, cos all u said above, as in yam and the the things presented are really to our culture all part of the engagement/betrothal, it is even called traditional marriage in some cases and Never can this mean marriage itself. because what it means simply is you have taken permission of family members to have their son or daughter in marriage, that should the marriage itself comes up, and parent and family members are not able to attend either due to distance or other reasons, you have permission to go ahead and exchange marital vows. infact engagement to my culture is the real thing for families, marriage is basically for sociial and official use. And at marriage there really no time to exchange all those yam and bags etc, save only for exchange of vow and signing the dotted lines... now am confused.

Don't forget the important parts of my example... "my husband," "yes, this was our traditional marriage," "yes, we are married," "no, it wasn't an engagement ceremony, we are married," etc. I'm remembering some actual cases as I write this, not exaggerating to make a point.

Also, you yourself state that the ceremony is "called traditional marriage in some cases." Keep in mind that U.S. immigration policy holds that traditional marriage renders a person ineligible for the K-1 (fiance) visa.

My dear friend .
I was denied a k1 for the same reason. I had a band on my wedding finger that my wife insisted I wear to show am taken"...she also referred to me as her husband on Facebook..coupled with the fact that her family came down for the ceremony was enough to deny me a visa. Now am stuck here with nvc trying to get my i130 processed.
Please no need to wait until you are denied...find a way to do a registry and petition for spousal.
Wish you well.....

I do not share the same views with the poster who wrote that the engagement is same as traditional marriage. Where I come from, you don't jump the wedding stages. There is a line between introduction/engagement and traditional marriage. You are not considered married until the suitors have paid the bride's dowry. And in most cases you don't come for introduction and pay the bride's dowry same time. You can only go as far as engaging with your fiance/é. Just saying...

But in your case, you've never argued in this thread that you're not actually married. Your position has always been "Well, looks like we need to file for the right kind of visa -- a spouse visa." Or am I misremembering this?

Lol...VO
The Ibo culture from the little I have learnt can be "complicated".....
The list of items I was told to bring for the introduction was as long as the list of items I would bring for the actual ceremony. And after my experience with the k1 refusal ...I got to understand that the bringing of gifts and acceptance by the brides family is as valid as a trad ceremony ....but who would have taught that the embassy would also see this as a trad ceremony !. My bad!
Dear VO....All am asking is to be reunited with my family ......my wife just delivered a bouncing baby boy 2 days ago and all I have ar pics and phone calls!......!!!
Infact I need to call nvc right now...I need updates!

Hi,

I would like to attend a coding program in the US. The program consists of a one week training and a 6 month - 24 month paid internship. I would like to find out what kind of visa would I be required to apply for.

I tried asking the training company(Eleven Fifty Coding Academy) , but they've only had few international participants and they were mostly from the Uk.

Thank you
