I have read alot about professional bodies here but to my amazement, little or nothing has been said about the CIIN. To me, it is to Insurance what ICAN/ACCA is to the accounting profession and making it is a lot more difficult. This perhaps may be due to alot of reasons which are not my objective here. I have also noticed here that people do not talk about the insurance sector that much here, despite its explosive impact on the nation's economy. Well, to those of you who are members or associate members of the professional body, what can you say about it? How has it influenced your career in the insurance industry? For the students thereof, what can you say about the 2013 April diet examination viz-a-viz the courses registered. The likes of D05 (Insurance Law), A745 (Principles of Property and Percuniary Insurance) etc. I wish you all good luck in your endeavours.

lets talk about it's 'explosive impact on the economy'

how much does it contribute to economy?

would anyone need this certificate to become an insurance marketer (life insurance)

would this certificate make anyone 'hot cake' in the labour market?
Re: Chartered Insurance Institute Of Nigeria (ciin) by APRIDE(m): 2:33pm On Apr 29, 2013
Ohh yes, i work in an insurance firm, and with this certificate, you are placed far above a Bsc Holder. Some of my colleagues got promoted the moment they qualified with official cars. They are never involved in marketing as that would amount to under utilization of their potentials. They are usually placed in the technical areas of the job. Infact with this certification, you really are a hot cake in the industry coupled with the fact that other organisations apart from insurance would look to have you occupy their risk management/insurance manager's sit.I have not seen a CIIN holder that is under employed.

Hi,please I need your help. I'm an Insurance marketer working with one of the biggest brand in Nigeria but in a small state where it's hard to get business. As you all know, marketers are only paid commission. I've not been able to get business since I started,I don't know if it's because of small economy drive of the state where I am or maybe they're some tips I ought to be using in getting business which I'm not getting right. I studied Accounting Education,I just got this job this year and a training was conducted for the newly recruited marketers. Please help me on how to be a good insurance marketer and get good businesses. Thanks

Thanks for this great thread. I've been searching for a thread like this on insurance sector on NL.

I'm currently studying insurance in UNILAG and will love to be a CIIN certificate holder after school. Please I need information on the processes and the cost and want to also know if I can start the professional course while I'm in school or I will have to get a BSc certificate first. Besides I hear there is an exemption for UNILAG students when they want to write the CIIN exam please is that true?

Please I will also like to do internship programme in any insurance company now that I'm on holiday just to have some basic knowledge and build myself practically. Will be happy if anyone can hook me up please.

Thanks @everybody

Good thread! I've been longing to see insurance and ciin being discussed on nairaland......I studied insurance at Lagos state university and presently observing my nysc service year in Kebbi state. I will be writing the certificate level this April diet.
Anybody here with an idea of the cost of the registration, and also of it's possible to do the registration without coming down to lagos because I intend to apply for exemption with my b.sc certificate.
And also let's use this thread as a medium to help each other especially in respect of unadvertised vacancies in the industry, etc
@phayvorr ciin gives exemption to all graduate of insurance irrespective of being a graduate of unilag, lasu or even redeemer's university .

@phayvorr, why wait till u grad before you start CIIN, if u clear ur papers @ each level... In 18 months you are through with the program... I will implore you to go to CIIN office @ Lagos street, Ebute-metta to get adequate info. For the first stage (certificate in insurance), you will pay around 55k.

@giantimpact tnx. I've gone tru the site and I saw some useful information. However, a friend of mine who wrote this October diet said I must apply for registration and exemption in person, but I don't know how true it is because am in far away kebbi state for now and travelling to Lagos is not an easy task because of d very poor road network .
Also, can I write the exam either in kebbi or sokoto or niger, or is it just Lagos I can choose as exam center?

does this mean that it's only 2 stages BSc holders always write, while ordinary cert holders get to write 3?

No, either u hold bsc or ssce u will write 3 stages, but a bsc will get exemptions for some courses in each stage. For example in stage 1 ,I will only be writing 2 papers and get exemption for the 3rd paper because I hold a bsc degree.

@Ajasa4link, as for the Excemption, you have to apply personally, since you have first Degree in Insurance you can claim 5 or 6 excemption out of 12 Courses. As for CIIN website, u might not get as much as compare to other professional institute like ICAN. I wish u best of luck.

Tnx bro. A friend of mine who wrote certificate level this October only wrote two papers after applying for exemption with his bsc insurance, so I guess I will do the same.
I will like to ask a question: Does having the certificate in insurance level increase my chances of getting better job placement after nysc, compared to just having my bsc certificate and discharge certificate after my service year?(I graduated with 2:1 in insurance )
Re: Chartered Insurance Institute Of Nigeria (ciin) by giantimpact(m): 9:25pm On Dec 07, 2014
@Ajasa4link, you only need ur first degree in any discipline to get an entry level job in the insurance industry just like d banking industry, However, because of stiff competition in employment in dis country, a professional qualification will give u an edge .Meanwhile, since u made a 2.1 don't limit ursef to insurance industry, try other sector like the Audit firms, investment bank, FMCG, Telecoms e.t.c.

OK bro tnx......So are u advising I take professional course in any of the disciplines u mentioned (if Yes,please suggest a list of these qualifications ) or I should get the first level of ciin first and try getting a job with it after my service year?
The truth is I don't currently have the funds to pay for ciin now,but saving from my monthly allawee as a corper and hoping the cash will add up before registration for the April diet closes.
And my main aim of writing ciin is to get a good job placement after nysc because I don't really wish to stay too long in the insurance industry but rather gather enough money to go for my masters and begin my journey into lecturing.
So what do u advise I do?

You do not apply for exceptions, the Institutes grant them based on what you studied in school (University or Poly). And yes, you can start the program whilst still in school but you may not be excepted for any course. I am a graduate of Economics who works with one of the leading Insurance Brokers in Nigeria. I qualified in less than three years even though i was only granted one exception (DO4). So in all, i did eleven out of twelve courses. For those of you that studied Insurance in school, you would be excepted from at least six courses and that leaves you with 5 or 6. Piece of cake right? I would be very serious and dedicated with my lectures if i were you as these courses are not to be taken likely. Be very wary of Insurance Law (DO5)- Diploma stage and other numerical courses in the final stage (Advance diploma). I strongly advise you attend lectures usually organised specifically for the exams. Ironically, i never attended any class as i am a very fast reader who thinks covering three chapters on your own is always better than spending hours on one chapter in the class. People differ in this regard. Again, it should be taken seriously as becoming an an associate member will definately boost your chances in the Industry. Qualifying between two to five years may be regarded exceptional as some people spend up to 10 years and more to get chartered. Good luck.
