Domestic Violence In Relationships! by Nobody: 11:12pm On Mar 02, 2015
Hi ppl

Just a general discussion, share your views, experiences , stories......

I have seen and heard women in relationships , where they get slapped, beaten, all sorts of violence thrown at them.

If i ask y they still remain in a horrible relationship they say its cuz they love him??
Some say its normal in nigeria for men to hit ladies behind closed doors .... Why is this acceptable and is there a law in nigeria preventing this...

Comment pls smiley

Its acceptable because of our social, geographical, political, religious, and geo-political construction

No woman should stay in an abusive relationship, none. But in Nigeria the reasons why most of these women stay put in such marriages is that of religion, societal accepted norms, scare of what people may gossip about her and the fact that they are house wives and have no reliable source of income. Their husband is their only source of livelihood so she would rather stay and receive the beatings than quiting and having no where to rely on. It's that bad.

As per if they have laws against domestic abuse, well it's never been about having laws but implementing them. Let a woman dare take her husband to court for abuse the judge might even laugh at her and tell her go and plead with your husband woman, he beats you and so what lol.

What a _stupid comment!

Who made you the judge and commander of the DP's people decide to put up? Who asked you to check on it? Who told you she was trying to attract a suitor? If you have a problem, get your issues sorted out. You don't tell people what to do. Fools like you watch worse with vaseline in your hands so how about you get the fvck outta here and stop this crass stupidity show you're putting up here. . .

I stand to be corrected, there is a bill against domestic violence/violence against women(can't remember the exact title of the bill), which was passed by the lower house in 2013, and sailed second reading in October by the Senate. Sadly, everyone is occupied with election, it might not be passed by the senate and receive the President's accent before May 29. In Nigeria, law enforcement play little role to quell domestic violence, but FIDA plays a good role to help abused women. On it's acceptance due to love, Nigeria is not unique to this scenario.

Well, such may never happen when there's gender inequality. That to me is the bane of most domestic abuses. When we (men) are thought we are head of the family and that whatever decision we take is final how then can one expects domestic abuse not to hold sway.

You see, I don't want to sound like an advocate of gender equality but when there's none of it domestic abuse will never be abolished in our country.

I'm too cultured to raise my hand on a woman I claim to love. If I can no longer tolerate our relationship, I'll end it honourably.

There's a law. But it's hardly properly implemented like many others or it can be manipulated to suit the wishes of the highest bidder.
