This thread has been helpful. Can someone who doesn't have education background establish a school? I mean, I have a BA degree, can I establish a school?

You can. But you need to surround yourself with education graduates WHO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. Meanwhile, pursue a postgraduate degree in education yourself. The sky is the limit.

I run a school,so I can give you some tips,dont ever let anyone discourage you from your passion, if really its your passion.

Have an humble beginning, it may look dull and rough at the beginning, but try as much as possible to be involved fully with all your might and sacrifice all you can into it not minding cost, and the skies will be your beginning. goodluck.

You said it just as it ought to be presented .
A lot of computer-administrators with facts and figures will discourage you but the truth is , you can always do it if you want to , when my school started in 2003 we have almost nothing to start with but today we are moving on , still aiming higher tho but presently among the best of school in my neighborhood .

Having a MEd is not the most important factor in running à school , it sure will help you know exactly what your workforce is up to , but you need a lot of administrative skills and trainings

Starting a school requires not just fund, but a high level of deligence, humility and patience... Williams and others have said it all, Start small and grow big. In my area, there's the lady that started 3 yrs ago with just wood and zinc... she started the low cost building as a home lesson where primary school pupils can go on saturdays and during the holiday. And she was equally preparing basic 5 for their common entrance... There was a small free land, and she just rented the space frm the owner. And she started the building.. She's expanding gradually.. And its now a full school with basic 1-5 and kindergattern. There's a small play ground with see-saw and other swings, And this lady is so commited to the work.. she started very small, and nobody thought she will still remain in the business becos the work load was nerve wracking... Now she has staffs... she started with employing SSCE graduates... Just start small... And grow big

U wont start seeing profit immediately when u're starting frm rock bottom.. becos most of the money u get frm the pupils will go back straight as capital for the growth of the school.. so u'll be looking at nearly half a decade or more before u will start seeing real profits... Thats why i said it takes great deal of patience... Since u said u wanna touch lives, its gud to have this type of orientation becos u will be better prepared for the long journey... the only way u can see profit as quick as possible in the business is when u have lots of millions to build an A-list school located in a busy environment with lots of staff and serious publicity and advertisment.. So since u dnt av the millions, just start very small. and since u're an NCE grad, u probably did EDU 124(CHILD FRIENDLY SCHOOL) so wen u're expanding, u will have a better knowledge in sustaining the school and making it standard, and ahead of ur competitors.

just start first . right there in your backyard or house.

START FIRST.

SEEK LOAN LATER.
for more info read a post from here about business ideas

@queenprecy.

I have read this thread from first page to last and I can tell you for sure the above comment is the best advice you've got so far, which is similar to what @williams20 told you at first.

I'm just about starting up a school and is already in the process of business registration with the corporate affairs commission -CAC. As a matter of fact I will be going to their Yaba office later today.

The worst thing you can do is start up a business with a loan. This's because every business follows a natural curve of downtime and loss before growing profitability. So, it's either you have money to absorb the losses for some 3-4 years as @williams20 told you or the business with run aground and closeup.

Again, JUST START!. You can start teaching for free, if possible. Just get started that's the first step. Start with nothing!. When you start you may not end up owning your own school, rather you may even end up offering services to schools.

Get started from your house now. The natural curve will land you where you ought to be. Nature (God's law) guarantees you will succeed but it may not be owning your own school but something you'll love doing around school.

Watch this youtube video. Go to YouTube and search " How to Start a Business with No Money". Watch the man demonstrating business curves on a white board.

pls can anyone guide me on how to open a school and what it can cost. pls Ur help is highly appreciated. Thanks
I'm also interested in owning and running a school someday. It's in my long term plan & I'm currently working on increasing my capital base and a few other logistics.
From the little of your posts & responses I've read, I understand that;
1. You have a little experience as a teacher (Very Important, but would have been best if you have a management level experience too, like that of a Principal or Vice).
2. You don't have much in terms of Capital.

In my own terms, I would say schools can be started by an Investor or a School Administrator. As an Investor, you have enough money to invest and can hire experts to handle almost everything while you just supervise. An administrator can also have capital, but has reasonable working knowledge of the education system. This knowledge can greatly reduce the amount of money you will spend in setting up. And an administrator can even start so small (even with no capital).

In your case where capital is a challenge, you should consider starting as an after school lesson class. This way, you won't need too much to start and you would gradually build the confidence and goodwill that will encourage people to send their wards to you. To get a quick start, you can start the lessons free even if it's in your backyard. The idea can be itemized as follows;
1. You don't need much to get started.
2. You use the opportunity to build a reputation. If parents realize their wards performances in school improves after sending them for extra lessons with you, they now believe in you and many will be ready to withdraw their wards to join your school when you get started.
3. You can be the only teacher for a start and not need to worry about paying anyone. By the time you have a reasonable number and begin to charge, you can engage others to assist you and pay as little as you can afford.
4. You won't need to bother about registration at this time.

If you are good, in a little while your small extra lesson group grows, you begin to charge, you now have little money that you can begin engaging other hands for assistance and you have a little pool to start you new school from. If your lessons class grows to a good number, you would have learnt a lot and made friends with many parents. Most of these parents would even begin suggest and urge you to start your own school. You share the idea with as many parents and get their feedback. When you see you have many of them encourage and promise to enroll their wards, then you have the confidence to start. By this time, you should have also been able to raise some capital from the little you've done so far. At this time you can also have the confidence to get loan from family & friends. (I won't encourage going for bank loan). Bank loan can be a serious burden. Bank loan can only be reasonable when you are well established with good turnover, unless you have other means of repaying the loan aside from your young school. If you have made many parents happy, you will have a good number that will be willing to assist you. At this stage you can consider renting an apartment (if you don't already have one). And go for one that will be enough for your student population and a little allowance for expansion, and is also at your reach to pay. You will likely be starting with one or two classes, depending on the responses you got from parents. You can continue with the after school lessons for both your new school children and other children from other schools that you don't yet have a class for. And you can grow from there.

I think this is the simplest way to start where you don't have capital. It will require lots of patience and hard work, but if you are good, you'll make it.

Well said , the best way to start is to make it a free offer or a money back guarantee ,
Offer it first , if you deliver and earn your customer's trust , then charge premium.
And please doing forget that exceptional customer service will take you there fast.

Now for those who don't have the big money(capital) to start a school, you can start wiv a creche and after school,which I think is in demand in my area and that was what I started wiv,though a little bit strict with parents who wld want to take you for granted that they are doing you a favour bringing their kids to your school.

Moved all my babies when they were 18months to school and that was it. Today I have a big school, a creche and afterschool for kids whose parents don't have time and we run till 9pm cheesy

That actually might even be the reason for you to be there, i.e. the fact that there are many schools around there. Why are there many schools there? Never mind competition if you have the resources. It brings out the best in everyone. Have you not wondered why every prepared seller in the market place seem to get on well all the same? Differentiate yourself in your product(service), pricing and any other key success factor there. You'll get your own clients. Don't underestimate the size of the market there except you are convinced that the market is actually saturated.
