360command:
with the electricity you have in your country, why can't you find a small scale production business process to do.. Something made in your country instead of importation.. I mean, if a country like Nigeria was to have more than half of what you are having in terms of electricity, by now our goods would be in the whole africa...

Bottomline is, with electricity, it aid production, it boost the countries economy.

True Talk! However it takes more than stable electricity for a manufacturing business to survive.. Red tapes, bureaucracy, monopolies, ready market, taxation etc. Cameroon is not a tax friendly country.. I was shocked at the Nigerian VAT.. VAT is 19.25% in Cameroon. Once you are into manufacturing you become a point of exploit for the taxation officials.. That said what in your opinion would be a good manufacturing scheme for me? Considering a modest capital. You also realise I would need to import machinery. The Cameroon custom system is the most unfriendly in Africa.. A total cut throat.

Wow! I love the modest life of the cameroonian. I do business in Cameroon too and I'm in cameroon every month.
I do business in Douala, Edea,Sangmélima and Gouara. I lodge in Somatel, Serena or Aqua whenever I'm around. I love your fish.

Are you from Bamenda, Boya or Bafoussam? Those are the regions that speak English.

You only need the lagos spirit to make it here!

Oh great! Douala is the business hub of Cameroon. We have lots of Nigerians doing business here.. Bafoussam is actually French speaking but close to Bamenda an English speaking zone.. I am from the Buea area. ( pronounced Boya)

Interesting write up. And while I know Cameroon is bilingual, your write up is sooooooooo up there devoid of quirks and abbreviations. I've got a very close friend who is 3/4 Cameroonian. Mom full Cameroonian, dad's mum Cameroonian while his paternal grandpa is Nigerian. While it's nice you coming over for business here, understand that Lagos is a jungle where a lion can eats it's relative. Heck the lion will even eat it's offspring if needed. That said I suggest you do a small surveillance trip where you can evaluate the environment. Most Cameroonian I have met find Lagos very fast paced and dare I say, wild. But there's an active Cameroonian community in Lagos and you can always hook up with them. They are around the surulere and apapa axis of Lagos. Easy to tell from their accents. I remember laughing out loud when someone was asked if he was a "myongo man". Business is doable in Lagos you just need to be extra careful. Just learn Ibo with that name cos every 'omo nna' in Lagos will surely speak ibo to you with that name u have. All d best

Thank you very much. "Myongo man" would stand for a ritualist, cultist, juju-man etc..Lol Sadly in Cameroon most financially successful people are often associated with "myongo" by the poor and lazy ones. An unfortunate situation born out of envy and jealousy..
I am blessed with a good tongue and would easily assimilate wherever I find myself.

i dnt believe u to be a camerounian. look here, if u mean business, Nigeria iz nt advisable for u to set up tokunbo cars business. if u love automobile biz, u can venture into transport company or spare part. one of d best thing u can venture into in 9ja iz agriculture. some peeps will laugh but if u knw ur way, u will smile at d end. many Nigerian prefer buying cars frm cotonou as many of d dealers here in 9ja would av removed ac, car cd player & some other meaningful things b4 selling d car. cost of getting car in cotonou iz cheap & dats y many prefers buying there. gudluck

I don't believe you are a Nigerian thus finding it hard to take your advice..Lol On A serious note I am 100% Cameroonian and have never been to Nigeria before. A few people have proposed agriculture on this thread and I will look into it. However business becomes enjoyable when you do what you got a passion for! I know of a few car dealers in Cameroon who have gone as far as Cotonou to procure vehicles. Sadly the risks involves deters many. Getting a vehicle into Cameroon through land border is as complicated as Nigerian politics.Lol

Wow thank you very much.. Very informative site.. I could not help laughing that the form I will need to begin the process is obtainable from a Bank..Lol AfriBank Nigeria Plc.. Naija I hail! In fact the card known as CERPAC is my green card valid for two years.. The most interesting thing is Cameroonians are in a category of their own..For a two years residential permit I am required to pay 480$ while other NON ECOWAS African nationals are required to pay 400$..So in other words if the CEO of MTN Nigeria is a South African his residential permit is 80 Dollars cheaper than mine..

Already acting like a naija guy!

Since you bear Obi, hope you're ready to swim? Tomorrow is all day swimming in the Lagos lagoon! Lol. Come with your life coat and suit.

You appear to know some things about us and that's a plus. Fellas be like..."I want to be a Nigerian when I grow up'. Interesting! So proud of my country.

Now to business, hope you know this outgoing government is (or has) laying (or laid) a foundation for the effective take off of the auto-motive industry, pitching its tent against import-oriented business. At most, only luxurious cars would actually sell as they sell to the rich. Outrageous duty and levy awaits these guys and I know they'd want to pass it onto the consumers.

The policy is yet to take effect because of a financing arrangement being mapped out by the stakeholders. This arrangement will enable middle income class earners and above to acquire locally made (produced or assembled) cars at affordable prices.

Also, there are just so many auto dealers in Lagos alone. From Surulere, to Ikeja, to V/I, to Lekki, to Ajah, to Festac, to Apapa to Oshodi, to Agege to Gbagada, to Ketu, to Anthony, to Ajegunle, to Olodi, to Magodo, just too many of them. Not to talk of the guys from Cotonu, that country just opened their borders to anything. So you are bound to face stiff competition. You'd need to grow your network, know people who know people who know people.

In terms of auto-parts, the Igbo brothers control that market.

In short, shine your eyes no be for mouth because even for here, Nwa Aba full yakata...

So make more research bro....

Cheers!

Thank you for the very informative post. Any way I just bought my life jacket oh!.. lagoon tinz...Lol

Most of the responses here are sarcastic to say the least. Who tell una say Naija bad like that? Make una try travel come South Africa come see where skabengos (touts) go kill person because of just 5 Rands. There are challenges here like every other country in Africa and truth is you must be careful, but bros do not be paranoid; most Nigerians are honest, accomodating and willing to offer assistance. Like most people have suggested, take a short trip, visit the Camerounian community in Lagos (mostly around Surulere and Apapa) and ask questions. Afterwards, go back home and reach a decision. Nigeria is changing, things are looking up, this is the best time to emigrate to Naija, in a few years time, mark my words, people go dey beg to get short visit visa to no avail. I wish you God speed bra.

Thank you for the encouragement.. I plan to visit at the end of this month. I think on ground information would be a treasure.

Your english is good for a francophone citizen. I am aware Cameroon is not part of ECOWAS, hence you would need resident permit to carry out business here. Your embassy in Nigeria would be of great help to you. On an honest note, Nigeria can be a loose country for aliens/immigrants. However, I would advice against doing things illegally, because the moment you turn out to be successful, your competitors would exploit ways to kick you out of business and that includes deportation.

Any business can be successful in Nigeria, it requires persistence, tenacity and ability to respond to change. The used-vehicle industry is a bit congested in Nigeria. To me, it is a sole proprietorship business, there is no barrier to entry, poor regulation and a good number of competitors. On the other hand, Nigerians will only engage in businesses that are profitable. Furthermore, the country is in the process of implementing a new auto policy that would encourage the production and demand for new vehicles. This is the competition you should be afraid of (substitute goods/products).

If you are ready to jump into the ocean without any conflicting thoughts, then I would advice that you study the market/industry and offer what your competitors cannot offer. That would be your niche/selling point.

You are welcome to Nigeria.

Thank you very much. Actually there is a part of Cameroon that speaks English and pidgin English. Someone posted a link to the Nigerian immigration service and it was very helpful. Sadly Cameroonians are required to pay a little more than other African nationals. I find that to be quite alarming, judging from the fact the Southern part of Cameroon has an interlocking history with Nigeria. In 1961 had my grand parents voted otherwise, we would have been a part of Nigeria like the people of Adamawa and Taraba States.

[b]During the scramble for Africa the Germans colonised Kamerun. After the First world war when they were defeated, their colonised territories were seized and given to other foreign powers.. Cameroon was partitioned into two. The bigger part given to France (Cameroun) and two smaller portions given to Britain.. Northern Cameroon and Southern Cameroon. The British administered the South and North as a part of Nigeria. In fact before the 1960's the Southern and Northern Cameroon had representation in the Nigerian Assembly. In 1960 the East of Cameroon won independence from France. In 1961 Southern Cameroon clamoured for independence.. However it was regarded as too small to gain self independence. Two options were put on the table by the UN. A: Reunification with French Cameroon or Integration with Nigeria.. The small portion in the North decided to join Nigeria while the South voted overwhelmingly to reunite with Cameroun.. The region in the South still has English as its official language.

The map below should give you an idea of what I mean..

Bafoussam is just an hour away from Bamenda. At such you are bound to meet a good amount of anglophones living there. The indigents are known as the Bamilekes. They are the Igbo's of Cameroon. Industrious, hardworking, business oriented, prosperous. Very crafty though!..Lol Wow an office in Bonanjo means you are in a white collar business. I have a car sales point in Akwa.
The bridge in Edea is one of the German pyramids scattered around the country..Solid structures that are over a hundred years old but still in good shape!
