The numbers in a bra size eg '38' from 38D, according to the op, represent the circumference of the body while the letter(s) eg 'D' represent(s) the cups ie the size of the breaasts. The slimmer or bigger a lady is, so the numbers increase or decrease so u can have a really big lady with tiny breaasts wearing 38 or 40 for band length and maybe B or C cups for instance.
