sademola: As you have observed, I own a farm. I am a farmer. A bank official is a banker. You didn't state what kind of 'work' you did for or against the bank. You might be right you were not a banker. My drivers, clerks and others in that category will be support staff. If you have evidence contrary to what I posit, state it. If you still have further issues, you can call our customer care line. 0800-ANGRY-BANK-WORKER What is a banker? A banker is responsible for establishing and maintaining positive customer relationships, planning and delivering effective sales strategies and monitoring the progress of new and existing financial products. Bankers may work as managers in high street branches providing operational support on a day-to-day basis, or in more specialised posts in corporate or commercial departments at area, regional or head offices. Banks operate in a fiercely competitive marketplace where change is common. Products and services offered have to develop to satisfy the expectations and demands of customers and working with staff and customers to achieve targets has become a very major part of the role. Responsibilities and work activities may vary between retail and corporate and commercial banking. Most retail bankers work in high street branches, dealing with both private and corporate customers, while some work in regional or head offices. Bankers who work with commercial or corporate customers may be based in branches or may work from specialised area or regional offices. http://www.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_banker |

234GT: Yes o, you can be fired without recourse, no explanations, an entire department can be cleansed just becos an athority figure has issues with one of its staff. I advised people stay stay 5-10yrs and leave, gone are the days when people hopped from bank to bank its just the same environment. I still believe the best time was between 1980-2010. If you worked during this period and had focus you should be okay, depending on our designation sha. You should have saved enough cash make contacts ; imbibe a disciplined work ethic and be on your own. ; |

I'd advise any well meaning banker (mostly the marketers) to move to Investment banking. At least marketing is done with class in those ones. Probably start with a CFA level 1. If you can pass this, your movement should be swift. |

Denn: This obviously doesn't apply to everyone. I know people that actually enjoy the whole marketing thingy in commercial banking. It's like a high for them. Again, certainly not everyone can go through the rigours of CFA. Whoever the shoe fits. Personally that's what I'd have done. |

I work with a mortgage bank and the story is really pathetic. The targets are so high and even as a back office staff, you are also given a target. A friend once told me that the politics in banks supersedes that of the US. Nollywood cannot stand the level of Voodoo in Banks. 1 Like |

Denn: I couldn't agree any less with your post. It is a clear indication of your knowledge of the industry in Nigeria. However, it is not all gloomy and sad for prospective entrants. It is just the part of the hazards which is not limited to banking. I make bold to tell you that there are so many bankers out there who don't think they would be happier elsewhere. So its a case of different strokes for different folks. I will join others to say the best thing to do is to plan your exit like you will be axed the next day and do well to live within your means so you can save up enough for the rainy days. |

Hmm, so in dis day & age pple are aspirin 2 bcom bankers? #smh. Av u guys eva asked urself why bankin is d readily available job in 9ja? Do u fink it's because of deir profits? Pple get hired & fired on d regular in bankin. So u're aspirin 2 ur doom! Very few pple now, I even dare to say only 20% of d entire bankers hav stayed up to 15 yrs in active service in 1 bank. @ least den it was gud u can move banks & go 2 one dat has lesser pressure, even wit ur nxt level. Now it's a wild goose chase. Banks Dnt even Wana employ somebody who's an SBO wantin AM or BO wantin SBO. It's dat bad. Ders no point movin cos evrywer is d same. Do u guys realise banks can actually change tins in 9ja 4 d beta? Ok, my former bank spends billions per month on diesel 4 both operatin branches & GM up to d ED's & MD( a reliable source 4rm an ex-colleague in FINCON). Dese banks can actually agree to demand 4 steady electricity by goin on strike ova d cost of diesel. Mind u, it eats outa deir profitability, but instead dey move deir bullion vans 2 houses of politicians durin campaign. Approve "Loans" 2 politicians wch will eventually turn bad. U see all dis have various degree of effects. D billions spent on diesel & genrator maintance alone wld hav bn drastically reduced if der was steady electricity. Steady profitability means growth, growth in a sector means growth in d economy, growth in ecy means job employments 4 youths even as bankers.reduction in over inflated targets cos der wld rily be no nid 4 dat since d bank has already cut d major ova head cost.wit d major ova head cost of electricity gone, banks can now grants soft or long-term loans 2 SME's witout unnecessary high interest rates. SME's expand; dey employ more pple; SME's & employees pay deir taxes, govt uses d taxes 2 improve oda sectors or 4 infrastructural dev. U see I can go on & on abt ow des Banks/corporotans directly feed off d pple & are no dft 4rm our politicians. D bankin system is as corrupt & evil as any federal govt parastatal(e.g NNPC) but unlike public sector wer everybody shares money & nobody gets fired 4 incompetence, in d bankin industry it's d ogas @ d top dat eat d money, but fire hard workin employees wit unrealistic targets. Ok jst imagine a bank givin it's operations employees targets? Dats absurd mehn! Guys look 4 better profession, bankin is CASTED! 1 Like |

mikolo80: I went through your 'answers' I would simply ignore as you have displayed a lack of industry knowledge. You don't know the meaning of MPR and you really want to counter it? You believe a bank's primary revenue should come from tke interbank market, CBN should recover bad debts and bank workers should sell sex. Is that your content? The job insecurity in the Nigerian Banking Career cannot be over-emphasized, particularly @ entry & mid levels. Best thing is to save up enough to get on a business of your own instead of wasting all dat intelligence on ungrateful employers. Take the job seriously as well as performance is a key metric for sustaining your job for as long as you want. |

Hey guyz, suffice it to say i am as disappointed as you all are and from your comments quite discouraged, but this is our country, our economy, our financial system we have to manage it till it gets better. Anyways, i just graduated from a university in the east and preparing for my service year. i've got a plan for myself but it involves the said capital; working in a bank seems like a good way to get it. i think i can handle the stress but i have got no idea how the system works, so it would be a good help if u guyz could give me pointers on how to be at least relevant in a banking environment. I studied finance by the way. I would appreciate ur help positive and otherwise.. |

I appreciate this thread a whole lot. The banking sector is really a Rat Race. The previous bank where I worked, operation staff were given targets, account opening, e-channels and all. In as much as I know that we have to cross sell, putting pressure on operation staff who require full concentration is absurd. It has now become a case of ensuring there is no service failure, seamless operations , fast TAT, error free transactions and meeting target. I almost lost my sanity. Banking is really crazy, operations is worse.... I really wanna break out of the operations department. Am still a Young banker with about 7months experience, (though am currently in my second bank) what courses and certifications can one take to remain relevant? How does one effectively manage salary? At what point should one get a loan (for landed property).... The experienced ones should please assist 1 Like |
