Thabo Mbeki, in a typical over-reaction to the past, destroyed the commando system, which had been an important component of rural security. Very few would now expect the SANDF to be able to protect us against anything.

With regard to doctors, most SA doctors have private practices and most foreign doctors are utilised on public institutions.

We have the same issue here(in Namibia)local doctors and pharmacists preferring private practices and pharmacies while public institutions are left with foreign professionals(Who later also do the same after they realize how much money they can cash in) Even our current health minister was pulled from his private practice to 'serve the nation'

1. The vice guy wore body armour and many most of our men wore same, we gave him.

2. SANDF wears same uniform because that is the only single camo army has, you have none for jungle terrain like we have. That Konduga battalion was reported by vice news as a mix of different army regiments from different terrain parts of Nigeria, jungle platoons mixed with dessert platoons, yes uniforms must differ.

SANDF can wear 20 different uniforms if it wants to but we do not want to stoop to that level of mediocrity. Many militaries in the world have joined our style of wearing only common camo for all armed services. It is very important because it limit potential impersonation from the enermy.

Helmets are cheap and we have a lot of them than you can count. Most SANDF troops in CAR couldn't wear it because they have been to CAR for long enough that they started to take everything for granted. I must admit that it is security risk to leave your helmet and bullet proof behind. There were also reports that some soldies complained about the heat because most of the countries in central and west Africa are hot.

SA has many private security industries which manufacture helmets and bullet proofs and I hope now they will device something which can be a lot comfortable to be used in climates such as those in central and west Africa.
