Good day people, i have been an admirer of this thread. My name is Andrew and I have a question which has been on my mind: i love accounting and i want to be a lecturer and a professor in the course but due to financial constraints I want to 'diversify' a little and do a PGD In Financial Mgt(i have a B.Sc in Edu/Acc) and then do a M.Sc in Business Admin and then move to Ph.D In Accounting(If I am permitted but if not I can settle for M.Phil before Ph.D). So my question is can I still lecture in Accounting with all these "diversifications"? "Seniors" in the house please respond. Thanks in anticipation. |

I great everyone here. Pls I need advice. I have a degree in electrical and Electronic Engineering. I have applied for masters 4 times but was denied each time. Maybe unlucky but I now my poor cgpa contributed hugely to this, I had 2.6. I applied to a particular school 3 times. I am doing an msc in information technology in NOUN but want to still come back to electrical cause I know I love it my result is just a badluck. Do you think I should continue with info tech or go back to elect. I am planning to do a PHD where I can make it fast. Which one amog the two is more lucrative. Thanks |

uau:congratulations. aiming for PhD depends on your career path. however, I will advice you to proceed with your PhD in federal or state universities rather at NOUN. This is for future reference so that you won't be clamouring and protesting against discrimination. |

Re: Thread For PHD Students by jayriginal: 1:15pm On Jan 29, 2016 |
Ovipoet: I'm pretty sure. A PhD is required with a 2.2 in BSc (even if you have the best result in your MSc). |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by jayriginal: 1:35pm On Jan 29, 2016 |
jeebz: I'm not sure where you are getting your information from. You haven't even demonstrated anything yet you use QED. Let me guide you. Lecturing begins with Lecturer2. A number of Universities have the policy of offering employment to their first class graduate (some are stricter and will only employ the best graduating first class student). Some people will be employed as Graduate Assistant even if they dont have a first class, provided they have a 2.1 degree. Now these Graduate Assistants are given four years to obtain their masters degree (or they may be shown out of the system). Such staff are never regularized without a masters degree. Once they obtain the degree, they are promoted to Assistant Lecturer. Thats how it works. If you dont have a 2.1, you need a masters degree and a PhD (not evidence of enrollment in a PhD program) to be appointed. With that, you will be appointed Lecturer2 (skipping the Graduate Assistant and Assistant Lecturer stages). Why listen to me? What do I know anyway? How about we ask Prof Julius Okojie. He ought to know something about it.
Take note, it is the PhD that will cure the defect of the BSc. Some time ago it used to be that a 2.2 could be cured by an MSc. Those days are gone. The only time that your registration in a PhD program will be relevant is where you have a 2.1 in the first place. cc Ovipoet. 3 Likes |

jayriginal:bros i hail u o. But do u think we really follow all these in naija. I know a dept in a famous uni in naija where 3 of their L1s dont v phd yet 1 Like |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by jayriginal: 3:33pm On Jan 29, 2016 |
drpialabi: Yes, serious Universities follow these guidelines in employing Lecturers today. Now, about those three Lecturer1s, one scenario is that they came into the system a lot earlier (ie before the strict enforcement of the policy)and just stagnated. There are examples of Professors who dont have PhDs. Perhaps they were granted a moratorium along the way. Another scenario is that they came in with a 2.1 and a Masters and so they started from Graduate Assistant/Assistant Lecturer up to where they are currently. Trust me when I say that they can never reach the rank of Senior Lecturer without a PhD. 2 Likes |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by Ovipoet: 4:01pm On Jan 29, 2016 |
jayriginal: Thank you very much. I made enquires from someone very current, a "Professor" and found out that you can be taken with evidence of PhD registration after your MSc and if your Bsc grade was second class lower. Although what you explained here is very correct and accurate, as it will give you a better edge. But it happens that people are still taken without completion of PhD as a criteria......... Thank you dear... |

Re: Thread For PHD Students by jeebz: 11:19pm On Jan 29, 2016 |
The answer to the question remains that a Bsc holder with an MSc and evidence of registration in a PhD field can get employed into the Assistant Lecturer cadre. I also posted a vacancy in State University to back my claims. |

Re: Thread For PHD Students by effyzie01(m): 8:20am On Jan 30, 2016 |
Ovipoet: It is possible to get a lecturing job with a 2.2 as a GA without even an MSc. It may be difficult in some schools though (due to partial autonomy the universities enjoy and, perhaps, departmental staff strength). Any class of degree with an MSc (without a University teaching experience) is qualified for an AL. Fresh PhDs without any teaching experience are qualified for L2 and PhDs with teaching experience in polytechnics and colleges are employed as L1. Rules vary from school to school but this is the NUC approved standard. 3 Likes |
