NAF EXPANDS YOLA APRON, CONDUCTS EYE SURGERY ON SECOND BATCH OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), as part of preparations towards inducting new platforms, is expanding the apron at the military wing of Yola International Airport to enhance air operations against insurgency in the Northeast. The NAF, at present, is at the verge of inducting the Mi-35M helicopter gunship and JF-17 Thunder Fighter Ground Attack aircraft in addition to acquiring the Super Mushshack trainer aircraft. There are also strong indications that the US Government may give the nod sooner than expected with regards to the sale of Super Tucano to the NAF to replace the aging Alpha Jets. The proposed fleet expansion, according to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar necessitated the expansion of existing facilities including the apron, pilot crew room, office/residential accommodation and recreation facilities newly put-in place to enhance the welfare of the personnel and reposition the NAF for effective and efficient air operations. Commissioning the new projects, the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, His Excellency, Senator Muhammad Umaru Jibrilla Bindow lauded the NAF for the commitment towards enhancing the welfare of its personnel. Senator Bindow noted that the projects are testaments to the high premium the NAF places on the welfare of its personnel and prudent management of resources by the incumbent leadership. Governor Bindow also applauded the NAF for its contributions to the counterinsurgency operations with a promise to continue to work with the Service to achieve more successes.
In a similar development, the CAS, Air Marshal Abubakar also used the opportunity of his operational visit to Maiduguri to commission a new block of transit accommodation constructed for officers. Meanwhile, in furtherance of NAF humanitarian support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast, another batch of 70 persons have benefitted from the free eye surgery undertaking by the NAF. The latest beneficiaries followed the first batch of 50 IDPs operated upon by NAF medics in Maiduguri. So far, the NAF has provided free medical care for over 30,000 victims of the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast.

Chad sends 2,000 forces to Niger to fight Boko Haram

Chad has sent some 2,000 troops to neighboring Niger to help the fight against Boko Haram following last week’s terrorist attacks by the Takfiri militants in the Nigerien town of Bosso.

The "heavily armed" soldiers will "search everywhere for Boko Haram," a military source said Wednesday.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Tuesday that some 50,000 people have fled the town of Bosso in Niger’s troubled Diffa region near the Nigerian border following deadly attacks by Boko Haram terrorists.

Boko Haram militants first took the town of Bosso on Friday in an attack, during which 26 soldiers, including two from Nigeria, were killed. A total of 55 militants from the Nigeria-based militant group were also killed during the fierce fighting.

The terrorists reportedly torched military barracks, police facilities and looted shops during the terror campaign in the town. The ambush and looting came as Niger's army was preparing to attack Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region, which straddles Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Nigerien troops later retook Bosso on Saturday, but the militants once again took over the town on Sunday night.

The mayor of Bosso, Mamadou Bako, and a military source confirmed the takeover on Monday, but the Nigerien government denied it.

Regional countries have created a joint military force that plays a key role in helping Nigeria fight the terrorist group. Back in February, the four littoral nations of Lake Chad launched a military campaign, together with a contingent from Benin, to confront the threat from Boko Haram militants in the region.

The Boko Haram terrorist group, which has pledged allegiance to the Daesh Takfiri militant group, has killed thousands of people, mostly civilians, since it launched its terrorist activities in Nigeria in 2009.

The Takfiri militant group has intensified its campaign of terror since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in the African country in May 2015.

Strikes killed 2 al-Shabab commanders in Somalia, military says

STUTTGART, Germany — A U.S. Africa Command assessment of two recent strikes in Somalia against the terror group al-Shabab confirmed that two top commanders were killed in the action, the military said Wednesday.

On May 27, U.S. forces carried out an airstrike in south-central Somalia that targeted Abdullahi Haji Da’ud, a senior military commander for the al-Qaida-linked group. The final assessment of that operation concluded that Da’ud was struck and killed, AFRICOM said.

Another ground operation on May 31, led by a Somali national army unit near Gaduud, resulted in the death of a top al-Shabab operative known as Mohammed Dulyadeen, it said.

“We are confident that the removal from the terrorist network of these two experienced al-Shabaab leaders will disrupt near-term attack planning, potentially saving many innocent lives,” AFRICOM said in a release.

A small group of U.S. forces serves in an advisory role inside Somalia, where a fragile national government has been waging a campaign against al-Shabab. Several years ago, al-Shabab was on the verge of overrunning Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu, but an ongoing campaign by African Union and Somali forces has pushed the militants out of many former strongholds.

The U.S. also has conducted airstrikes against targets in Somalia, actions that have become more frequent in the past two years.

Boko Haram: NAF Inducts Mi-35M Helicopter Gunship, JF-17 Ground Attack, Super Trainer Aircraft

As part of preparations towards inducting new platforms, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is expanding the apron at the military wing of Yola International Airport to enhance air operations against the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-east and is inducting more aircrafts into its inventory.

This came as German government monday disclosed its plans to commence the supply of military hardware to support Nigeria’s counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the North-east and Niger Delta regions, before the end of 2016.

The Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Captain Ayodele Famuyiwa, in a statement yesterday, said NAF, at present, is at the verge of inducting the Mi-35M helicopter gunship and JF-17 Thunder Fighter Ground Attack aircraft in addition to acquiring the Super Mushshack trainer aircraft.

Famuyiwa said that there are also strong indications that the US Government may give the nod sooner than expected with regards to the sale of Super Tucano to the NAF to replace the ageing Alpha Jets.

He said that the proposed fleet expansion, according to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar, necessitated the expansion of existing facilities including the apron, pilot crew room, office/residential accommodation and recreation facilities newly put-in place to enhance the welfare of the personnel and reposition the NAF for effective and efficient air operations.

The DOPRI said that the Governor of Adamawa State, Sen. Muhammad Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, while commissioning the new projects, lauded the NAF for the commitment towards enhancing the welfare of its personnel.

Bindow, he said, noted that the projects are testaments to the high premium the NAF places on the welfare of its personnel and prudent management of resources by the incumbent leadership.

Famuyiwa said that governor also applauded the NAF for its contributions to the counterinsurgency operations with a promise to continue to work with the Service to achieve more successes.

In a similar development, he stated that Abubakar also used the opportunity of his operational visit to Maiduguri to commission a new block of transit accommodation constructed for officers.

In a related development, Famuyiwa said that NAF had in furtherance of its humanitarian support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast, saw another batch of 70 persons benefiting from its free eye surgery.
“The latest beneficiaries followed the first batch of 50 IDPs operated upon by NAF medics in Maiduguri. So far, the NAF has provided free medical care for over 30,000 victims of the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary, German Foreign Office, Mr. Markus Elderer, while speaking to journalists on the sideline of the defence session of the Nigeria-Germany Bi-National Commission meeting in Abuja said the decision of his country to support Nigerian security forces efforts in tackling the emerging challenges was at the instance of a request made by President Muhammadu Buhari at the last G-7 summit hosted by Germany last year.

He listed the expected equipment to include ground surveillance equipment, anti-mine equipment, gunboats and others.

He further disclosed that Germany would commence the supply of the equipment as soon as the equipment aid agreement was signed between the representatives of both countries.

Elderer also explained that the military aid to Nigeria would also include training of Nigerian military personnel especially military engineers in the handling and maintenance of the equipment.

He said: “It was at the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Germany at the occasion of the G-7 summit that it was decided that we will very practically help to address Nigeria’s security concerns.
“The Nigerian government requested equipment support and military training so we are incorporating all of these in this agreement.

“We are doing this through training, through equipment supply like the ground radar system, mine clearing equipment and mobile health units for the security forces in order for them to carry out these difficult tasks of combating terrorism.

“We are almost at the finishing line and we are just awaiting the signing of the agreement so that we can begin implementation, I think everything will be done this year,” he added.
Speaking further, Elderer identified other aspects of the agreement as bio-security, mopping of small arms in the country, police training and health support.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador Danjuma Sheni, said that the efforts of the German government to support Nigeria’s quest for peace and security in the sub region was laudable.
Sheni assured that Nigeria would leverage on the opportunities created through the Nigeria-Germany Bi-National Commission to boost other aspects of relations that was beneficial to both countries.

He revealed that the secretariat of the commission was working tirelessly to ensure that the agreement was signed before the end of June.

“We have actually been working on this agreement for a while now, the agreement is particularly important because it would fast track the kind of relationship we have,” he said.
“Germany has offered some equipment for use both in the creeks and in the North East, there are mine clearing equipment and others.

“But all these will be delivered when the agreement is signed, so we are working day and night and I can assure that between the next two to three weeks this agreement will be signed.” he added.
The Permanent Secretary also noted that the German delegation is in Nigeria to finalise the signing of agreements under the auspices of the Nigeria-Germany Bi-National Commission.

He said that the equipment aid programme which comprised supply of military hardware and military training is a key feature in the Nigeria-Germany Bi-National Commission deliberations.

Army says some Boko Haram terrorists trapped in Sambisa

The Nigerian Army says its troops have successfully trapped some members of the Boko Haram terrorists groups within the enclaves of Sambisa forest.
Speaking to newsmen, the Theatre Commander of the Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor said the Army had succefully eliminated the threat of the group and are now currently surrounding the area.
Irabor said it has become impossible for the insurgents still holed up in the Sambisa Forest to get out or for them to have access to civilization to get any supply.
“What we have now done is to reduce the capacity they have in Sambisa and the same way they have made it difficult for us to reach them, we have also made life unbearable for them. If they remain there they are on their own but if they come out and surrender we are here to receive them,” he said.
The Boko Haram insurgency has raged on in Nigeria’s northeast for about seven years now killing over ten thousand.
However, in the past few months, the military has succeeded in beating back the Islamist militant sect and significantly reduced the amount of suicide attacks on innocent civilians in the northeast.

That's why we are buying the Super Mushshack trainer aircraft, also made by PAC.

my friend u are kind of mistaken here

fighter pilots undergoes 2 types of training
1.flight training
2.operational training

flight training :

1.Basic/primary training are usually done on turboprop trainers, like the Pilatus PC-9 and Embraer Tucano. these trainers are used to assess a candidate's technical ability at an aircraft's controls, reaction speed and the ability to anticipate events.

2.Advanced training those that complete primary training progress to an advanced trainer, typically capable of high subsonic speeds, high-energy manoeuvers, and equipped with systems that simulate modern weapons and surveillance.eg supersonic T-38 Talon, the BAE Hawk, the Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet, the Aero L-39 and the Yakovlev Yak-130.

operational training :

1.Lead-in fighter training (LIFT) utilises advanced jet trainer aircraft with avionics and stores-management capability that emulate operational fighter planes, to provide efficient training in combat scenarios with reduced training costs compared to moving straight to operational conversion.here true-to-life combat situations training are imparted.

2.Operational/type conversion training are done on two-seat trainer versions of military ground-attack and interceptor aircrafts . These are combat capable operational conversion aircraft types to provide on the job training to pilots who have graduated to this level. Most operational conversion aircraft retain the full functionality of the operational version with slight degradations to performance due to increased weight and drag, and possibly reduced range due to a reduced internal fuel load.Once the pilots are qualified to fly a specific type of aircraft, pilots will continue with regular training exercises to maintain qualifications on that aircraft and to improve their skills

super mushshak is a 1st stage primary/basic trainer where newly inducted pilots are taught basic flying skills like the Pilatus PC-9 and Embraer Tucano

recently US stopped the sale of F16 to pakistan
and pakistan was angry because most of them were F16D(2seater/trainer) versions meant for use for type conversion training to fly JF17.
this has complicated their training programme for jf17 and added extra operational load to the existing F16Ds thus shortening their operational lives.

i have a feeling naf pilots will undergo last stage/type conversion training in pakistani F16Ds in pakistan.

@nemesis2u tnks for the insight, you just thought me something new today.

When the new platforms arrive I will not be surprised if they are first flown by PMC.......? Just like the case of the NA gazelle where first flown by PMC too.

But from some website I checked the Super Mushshack trainer aircraft meets the requirements of a modern primary training syllabus and is an ideal basic trainer for basic flight training and instrument flying.

if we try to be technically too correct

Super Mushak type aircrafts are for Ab initio training.

and Super Tucano for basic/primary training.

however changing the training syllabus and increasing the training period on both Super Mushak and Super Tucano might help .

however the big question is when a newbie pilot flies the single seater jf17 for the first time will he be able to handle the planes transition from sub-sonic to trans-sonic to supersonic speeds and how will he deal with emergencies and recover the aircraft at trans-sonic and supersonic speeds due to stalling or uncontrolled spin due to wrong maneuvering etc
hundreds of things can go wrong and he has no way of knowing how to handle these emergencies at super sonic speeds because he is trained on subsonic trainers only.

jf17 does not have full digital quad redundant FBW so at certain borderline flight regimes new pilots might/will face problems.

only experienced naf pilots (flying the j7) will go for training in pakistan on f16 trainers that's a given untill the 2 seater jf17b comes online

Yeah, this skipped my memory. All NAF fighter pilots train on the T-38 Talon. If the Super-Tucano sale goes through, the aircraft would be used as a light fighter only. Since it doesn't have the characteristics to simulate a super-sonic jet, NAF would still need to get a proper trainer.

Anyway, the dual seater JF-17B should be launched at the tail end of the year or early 2017. There's not much to worry about.
