Will a 12volt 1.5KVA inverter be able to charge a 4x12 volt battery bank Picture below Note- I will be using point 2 and 7 as charging point

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Im2Busy2Bother: 4:47am On Jun 14, 2016 |
shamecurls: Your connection shows a 24V system not 12V. You did not mention the charging current of the inverter. Any inverter can charge any numbers of batteries, the big question is time it'll take to fully charge. The smaller the charging current, the longer it'll take to fully charge the batteries 1 Like |

Im2Busy2Bother: You are very right. It's 24 volt Thanks for the support. Actually I intend using 8 12v batteries and hope to get a external charger later. It's a luminous brand and not familiar with the charge current. |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by Im2Busy2Bother: 5:20am On Jun 14, 2016 |
shamecurls: Ok. Luminous 1.5kva 24v has maximum charge current of 15A Connecting the 8 nos of 12V 150Ah batteries connected in parallel will allow you to quadruple the capacity, producing 24V with 600Ah out the end Calculating the battery charge time using Charging Time of battery = Battery Ah / Charging Current T = Ah / A Time = 600/ 15A = 40 hours (almost 2 days ) This 40 hours is more of theoretical calculation as it could be less based on the battery's state of charge (SOC). So you really need an external charger to charge this big bank of batteries faster. 1 Like |

dejavus: Look at it this way: Your solar setup is only as good and as efficient as your charge controller. That is one piece of equipment you should not cut corners on because once it is not functioning properly, the first consequence would be your batteries and with that your setup would pack up even if all other equipment are in top shape. Secondly, strength and dependency or reliability lies in simplicity. Once an equipment becomes multifunctional, from my personal experience, the reliability can no longer be as good as a single purpose equipment. In the design and built, compromises must be made either, in this case, in terms of size, weight, aesthetics, quality of materials, quality of fabrication and above all cost, which definitely must affect the overall efficiency and general performance and eventual durability and reliability. Again, rate of failure should be considered. From my experience rate of failure with multifunctional equipment can be higher and so I would rather not have an integrated equipment fail on me and that means two equipment at once. I would rather one packs up at a time and I can deal with it. Cheers 4 Likes |

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by mank1234(m): 11:01pm On Jun 14, 2016 |
Im2Busy2Bother: Not entirely true. If the charging current is low sulfation can occur and battery life will be short (too many batteries in a bank wrt charger capacity). Also, if charging current is too high, battery can be damaged (too few battery wrt to charger capacity). This is why some manufacturers specify minimum number/maximum number in a bank. 1 Like |
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by mank1234(m): 11:10pm On Jun 14, 2016 |
shamecurls: If it's true that the charging current is 15A, it means each battery will receive 3.75A which is too low a charging current. I bet you your battery is going to spoil soonest. For you envisaged setup, you need a 40A to 60A charger for optimum operation and longevity of your battery(before you change to new ones) 1 Like |
