[b]Akpeyi Listed As Nigeria Olympics Goalkeeper

www.nairaland.com/attachments/3849336_55b0090aaf9bb8504a0000001_jpeg51bdf2905d76146eabb722acde3aa6a3

South Africa-based Daniel Akpeyi will be on Nigeria’s squad to the Rio Olympics as one of the over-aged players and he will be the top-choice goalkeeper ahead of Emmanuel Daniel in Brazil.

Akpeyi, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, is a late inclusion to Nigeria’s provisional list as one of several over-aged players and he is now set to be selected as one of the three over-aged players in the squad, Africanfootball.com reported.

The 29-year-old was initially not in contention for a place in the squad, as Nigeria U23 coach Samson Siasia had listed only outfield players as possible over-aged for the Games, but appears to have had a change of heart.

“Dan (Akpeyi) was not on the list but coach (Siasia) realises he needs an experienced goalkeeper in the squad especially after the Korea tournament,” an official of the Nigeria Football Federation said.

“He (Akpeyi) is not new to coach and that’s why he has been selected and I can tell you that he will make the team except any last minute change like his club refusing to release him, which we don’t think will happen,” the source informed further.

Akpeyi is expected to resume for pre-season on July 6 with his club while he will not be with the Nigeria U23 all through a training camp in US later this month. The goalkeeper is however expected to join them in time for the Games in Brazil.

The goalkeeper has previously worked with Siasia and was a member of the silver-winning FIFA U20 World Cup team in 2005 and was also part of Nigeria’s Olympic squad in 2008.

The latest being the ill-fated 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Egypt, of which Siasia was the Super Eagles coach on an interim capacity and Akpeyi was in goal in the return leg in Alexandria.

But contrary to general reports that Victor Moses may be dropped from the team, The PUNCH has confirmed from the NFF that the Chelsea player never made the list.

“From the list available to me, Victor’s name is not there. I have a copy of the provisional list the coach is working with and his name was not even in the original list drawn up,” the NFF top official said on Wednesday.

What is wrong with Siasia? Emmanuel Daniel is a competent goalkeeper who should even be invited to the Super Eagles. Why is Siasia wasting one of the Overage slots?

Beggars belief!

Don't we all know, there is something fundamentally wrong with Siasia, all these things will lead him to no where,he has to retrace his steps and come back to his senses. He ought to build a strong U-23 team capable of taking over from the SE. I have long lost confidence in him until he proves me wrong

This thread dey totori me, Nice job to the Ogas in the house. Pls is it true that K.Nwakali has been promoted to the Arsenal senior team? If yes, do u guys think it's good for him at this early period of his football career.
I think he needs to pass through the U21 ( the process iheanacho passed through @ mancity before he broke into the senior team) in order for him to understand the system and culture of English football.

Most of Iheanacho's junior football playing days was due to his lack of work permit. As soon as he got his work permit, he did not last long at the Junior level before breaking in. Before that, Nacho went on tour with Manchester City and was one of the best players despite a lot of senior players in the squad.

These guys are special talents, breaking in would not be hard. Even fitting in. Fabregas was seventeen when he broke Into the Arsenal squad. He was the best player of the 2003 U17 World Cup that Mikel and Obasi participated in.

He just has to work very hard in training and pay attention to his coaches and senior players.

K. Nwakali has the talent. I do not see him struggling to grow.

“Pep Guardiola wants me back at City. He has contacted me and says he wants me in his team for next season,” Yaw Yeboah said.

“He has assured me that he has plans for me so I should work hard. It is a big privilege for me. For a coach like Pep Guardiola to contact me that he wants me in his team is good news."

Remember Yaw Yeboah who won the MVP of the African Youth Championship our Flying Eagles won. Guardiola gave him a shout out.

I hope Guardiola remembers our own Chidebere Nwakali also. Wishing the young Citizens the best.

Adarabioyo looks likely to have more games with the first team of Manchester City this season.

Yes I believe Nwakali can survive it without much struggle but for him not to participate in the development program that Nacho passed through will still be a problem for him as it will take a very long time for him to understand the real culture of english football. That delayed work permit was a blessing to Nacho, it helped him to integrated and understand real koko.
I pray he plays as it supposed to be and am even fore seeing loan. I like the guy, I dnt wish him bad career. I believe working on the right path will help his career on the excellence part.

But I thought fabregas was part of part Arsenal Academy Team before the U17 and later on promoted to the gunner's U21 before he broke into the main team... I think I'm right.

Chikatara heading to France, rejects Al Ahly, Turkey

Chikatara (middle) shows off his Wydad Casablanca No 10 shirt. This deal is now off and the striker looks set to move to France

by Samm Audu

AfricanFootball.com understands that Abia Warriors striker Chisom Chikatara is closing in on a move to France after a much-celebrated transfer to top Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca crashed.

The player himself has turned down a chance to join Egyptian giants Ahly as well as several clubs in Turkey.

The CHAN 2014 star, along with club boss Emeka Inyama, was in Abuja this week and it is believed it is in connection with his switch to France.

“It looks very likely Chikatara will finally move to France,” a top source informed AfricanFootball.com

“The deal has reached an advanced stage, but at this point in time, I cannot reveal the name of the club.”

Wydad swooped in for Chikatara after he fired four goals, which included a hat-trick against Niger, at the CHAN in Rwanda.

They among other things promised to pay $500,000 for his transfer, but eventually they failed to come up with the cash for Abia Warriors boss Inyama to announce to AfricanFootball.com that the deal was off.

EXCLUSIVE: DOMINIC IORFA PREFERS MOVE TO WEST HAM

Jun 5, 2016

Wolverhampton Wanderers 20 year old defender Dominic Iorfa who is reportedly on the radar of Southampton, Arsenal and Crystal Palace will prefer a move to West Ham according to a family source.

“It’s true that Iorfa is wanted by Southampton, Arsenal, West Ham and Crystal Palace but for obvious reasons he is more comfortable with a move to West Ham where he is most likely to get more playing time than any of the above team” a family member told Owngoalnigeria.com.

As exclusively reported by Owngoalnigeria.com in January a bid from West Ham was rejected by Wolves in the winter transfer window for Iorfa who impressed for England at the recently concluded Toulon football tournament which England won.

However it appears they will get their man this time around even though his father Dominic Iorfa snr. an ex Nigerian international told us in January that Wolves are demanding a transfer fee in excess of £7m.

Still eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level he has made over 60 appearances for West Ham since making his debut as a 17 year old and he is heavily tipped to be a success in the English Premier League due to his pace, strength, tackling and aerial abilities.

SHOCKER! ARSENAL IWOBI DOESN’T KNOW THE NAME OF NIGERIA PRESIDENT

Nigeria international Alex Iwobi failed to name the president of Nigeria during a question and answer segment with Arsenal Magazine which was centered around questions involving Nigeria.

Iwobi represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to Nigeria and has already become an established member of the Nigeria senior national team but still it appears he is not in touch with the latest political happenings in the West Africa nation.

Excerpts from the interview.

1. How would you describe your country?

Very passionate. They love sport, all kinds of different sports, and really love to win.

2. Name three things that are great about your country?

I’d have to pick out how passionate about sport they are again. Then you’ve got the food, which is really nice and the people are really nice too.

3. And something you would like to change about your nation.

That’s a tough one – I don’t really know what I’d want to change to be honest.

4. What’s your favourite food from your country?

Definitely jollof rice. It’s rice served with tomatoes, onions and different spices, plus meat. I think it’s quite popular across Africa – it’s definitely my favourite.
5. Which sports are popular, other than football?

I think athletics are very popular but the people in Nigeria just love football.

6. Where would you like to go in your country that you haven’t been?

I’m not too sure about that.

7. Who is the current President/Prime Minister of your country?

I know it was Goodluck Jonathan for a while but I’m not sure who it is now. I grew up in England but I love going back.

8. Tell us – if you can – the first line of your national anthem?

Erm, arise oh compatriots?
10. What languages do you speak?

I speak English and I can understand Igbo, which is spoken where I’m from.

SOLOMON,AJAYI AND DIYOKE ON TARGET FOR RIJEKA IN PRE SEASON GAME

The Nigerian trio of Theophilus Solomon, Goodness Ajayi and Gerald Diyoke were on target for Croatian side HNK Rijeka in their convincing 7-2 victory over Opatija in their first pre season game.

Solomon who scored 13 goals while on loan to second division side NK Sibenik last season set up the first goal for Rijeka before side footing home the third goal for his team from a clever cut back.

Diyoke stole the show in the second half scoring a brace in the 54th and 58th minute to take scores to 6-1 before turning provided for Ajayi who scored the 7th goal for Rijeka.

The trio were not the only Nigerians who played in the game for Rijeka with goalkepper David Nwokolor coming on in the second half as well, the 20 year old made 16 appearances for second division side Sibenik last season.

They will be hoping for game time with the Europa League campaigners when the season commence in Croatia although they are reports they could also be loaned out before the start of the season.

SUSPENSION RULES NPFL TOP SCORER OBAJE OUT OF KANO PILLARS TIE

Nigeria professional football league top scorer Godwin Obaje has been handed a one match ban by the League Management Company (LMC) for picking up five bookings.

The 13 goal hit man received his fifth booking of the season against Heartland FC of Owerri last week which triggered an automatic one match suspension going by the rules of the league and will not be able to add to his goal tally when they take on Kano Pillars this weekend in a derby game in Bauchi.

Obaje winner of the League Bloggers Award (LBA) for the best player in the Nigeria League for the month of May will be sorely missed by Wikki Tourist but his suspension has opened the doors for mid season acquisition Alhassan Ibrahim popularly refereed to as Muazam to be given his debut by the Bauchi based team.

However his suspension won’t see him lose ground in his bid to be top scorer as his closest challenger Okiki Afolabi of Sunshine Stars who has same amount of goals as the 19 year old won’t be in action as well following the postponement of Sunshine Stars game against Enyimba who will be in continental club football action this weekend.

Wikki Tourist will however be looking to avenge the 2-1 loss they suffered in Kano in the reverse tie as they bid to hold onto top spot for the fourth week running in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

ROMA SADIQ UMAR THREATHENS LIVERPOOL’S AWONIYI OLYMPIC HOPES,APPLIES FOR US VISA

In a bid to fortify the attack line of Nigeria U-23s coach Samson Siasia has extended invitation to AS Roma teen striker Sadiq Umar ahead of camping for the Rio Olympics.

Owngoalnigeria.com gathered from sources close to the 19 year old that he has already applied for a visa to the USA where the team will be camped ahead of their participation in the football event of the Olympics.

Sadiq’s invitation will serve as a wake up call for Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi who is reportedly close to being axed from the squad following a poor showing at the recently concluded friendly tournament in Suwon,South Korea.

Junior Ajayi from our findings is guarantee to be in the team and Siasia is also considering Watford forward Odion Ighalo as one of the overage players leaving one more slot in the team central striker position which Sadiq and Awoniyi will do battle to win.

Nigeria are presently the champions of Africa at U-23 level and also won gold at the male football event of the Olympics in 1996. In this year edition they will trade tackles against Japan, Sweden and Colombia in group B for a spot in the knock out phase.

EXCLUSIVE: BOLOGNA FEW DETAILS AWAY FROM AGREEING LOAN DEAL WITH ROMA FOR SADIQ UMAR

Italian Serie A side Bologna will in the coming days complete the loan signing of AS Roma talented teen Sadiq Umar, Owngoalnigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Bologna are reportedly few details away from the deal which will be a huge blow to newly promoted Serie A side Crotone who were at the driving seat to sign the 19 year old as early as last week.

Owngoalnigeria.com gathered Roma are convinced that Sadiq stands a better chance of having a steady career growth at Bologna than at Crotone who they expect to struggle as they are new to the top division in Italy.

Sadiq is highly rated by Roma and they believe a loan spell to a team where he is guarantee to play on a regular basis for the first team will aid his development faster than playing for their Primavera side.

Last season Sadiq made six appearances for Roma in the Serie A scoring two goals in the process but struggled to get game time under Luciano Spalleti who replaced Rudi Garcia as coach of the Rome based side in January.

EXCLUSIVE: EINTRACHT BRAUNSCHWEIG BEAT GREUTHER FURTH TO SULEIMAN ABDULLAHI SIGNING

German second division side Eintracht Braunschweig have beaten fellow second divison side Greuther Furth to the signature of Viking of Norway forward Suleiman Abdullahi.

Last season Braunschweig finished 8th on the German second division log one spot ahead of Spvgg Greuther Furth and they have once again confirm their supremacy over the Furth based side by pipping them to Abdullahi’s signature.

Eintract Braunshweig succeeded where fellow German second division side St. Pauli failed in January by agreeing a fee for the forward as opposed to St. Pauli who had a bid rejected for the services of the 19 year old who joined Viking a year ago.

” Abdullahi will be joining Eintracht Braunschweig in the coming days, the deal was agreed this week despite Greuther Furth efforts to sign him” a source close to the deal told Owngoalnigeria.com.

Eintracht Braunschweig reportedly agreed a transfer fee close to one million euros with Viking of Norway for the 19 year old who scored five goals in 13 games during the first stanza of the league in Norway this season.

Of course I remember Yaw Yeboah. smiley

I am sure Chidi Nwakali is wanted too. That's why he wasn't released like Nathaniel Oseni.

In fact, Chidi Nwakali's agent is Pere Guardiola, Brother to Pep Guardiola. And He was told by Pere that he is most likely to return to the Etihad for Pre-season.

Right now, we have the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Chidi Nwakali Tosin Adarabioyo and Ashinme Kigbu on all Man City's books ahead of the new season.

Kigbu is with the U-18s, Adarabioyo should step up more to the senior side with time under Pep and a vital cog in the U-21s, Chidi Nwakali is still highly rated within City.... and Nacho is the The Star Boy of Man City's Youth.

All is well. wink

TheGoodJoe:

It seems we have a special talent in Chidebere Nwakali.

An Old report

"Celtic wanted to sign Chidiebere last week, but the club gave them a negative response,” said Allwell Nwakali (Chidi's older brother).

“The only thing stopping Chidiebere from playing for the Manchester City first team is work permit. Manchester City have plans for him because he was here (in Nigeria) for just a week and they called him back but in the end, they will be the ones to decide where he plays.”

I believe Boyata's impressive performance made Celtics look into the Manchester City Etihad Campus for another bright talent and they spotted C. Nwakali.

This shows the boy is quality. Manchester City turning down a loan deal to Celtics shows Chidebere Nwakali is big in their plans.

Exciting PreSeason ahead. I can not wait.

Brendan Rodgers, former Liverpool Coach is the current Celtics boss. Him wanting Chidebere Nwakali shows the lad is promising.

Our midfield is becoming dangerous. Popoola, K. Nwakali, Ndidi, C. Nwakali, Nwobodo, Matthew, Usman etc.

This is getting dangerous.

Oh yes he is.... He is big in their plans and I trust he will keep working his socks off to vindicate their faith in him.

Chidi Nwakali is Nigeria's next Big Utility player. Watch out for him people (he can play Right back, Dmf, CMF and box-to-box and he excels in all).

Another Nigerian special talent indeed.. smiley

Shocking. It is rumored, Guardiola himself blocked Chidebere Nwakali's deal with Celtics. Let us see how this goes.

Another interesting fact is that Guardiola's brother, Pere is Chidebere Nwakali's agent.
