Hello,

Good day Dafe, please i want to ask if a graduate with 3rd class can apply because even if one converts the 3rd class GPA to USA 4.0, it sill will be very low. But the person is going to write the GRE exam and aims to get a very high score to suffice for the low GPA. So, I want you to advise me on this, if someone with a low GPA like 3rd class with a good GRE score over 300 can still apply and given admission and tuition waiver/full funding?

Thank you Sir.

Hello Yomyjoe,
It depends on your Third class CGPA. If your CGPA is close to a 2nd class lower, you might be lucky to have a CGPA of 2.5 out of 4 when your transcript is evaluated by WES. If you do, there are some school that accept CGPA of 2.5 out of 4. However, I will suggest that you prepare very well for GRE so that you can have a good score in it. This will signal to the admission committee that you are a good student who probably have spent more time playing during the undergraduate days. Please don't attach any importance to my last statement. I am just trying to let you know how the committee might view your undergraduate result. So I will suggest you give the WES evaluation a shot and then prepare for GRE. Once you meet up with the 2.5/4 CGPA, you can now go on google to type "US universities that accept 2.5 GPA for graduate studies". Those schools will the pop up and you can start your applications. I wish you all the best.

Hi Dafe!
I have a UG (project mgt tech) cgpa of 4.01(ECE conv. =3.23), scored 88 and 298 on iBT TOEFL and GRE respectively. I'm not too pleased wt my GRE and TOEFL score and hope to write them again, in preparation for fall 2017. I wish to apply for Business Intelligence/Analytics in US and hope to get an assistantship. What would u suggest? Should I write the standardized test again? How about getting assistantship? Do u have any professional advice as regards my intended graduate course? Meanwhile, I hope to start my masters in Nigeria very soon and I've also been offered an assistantship position here in Nigeria from the university (A fed uni of tech) I graduated from. Will my assistantship position in Nigeria aid my graduate application in US? I'm very open to ur opinions.. In addition I'm proficient in some very related softwares including oracle database and PM softwares.

Thanks.. Hope to read from u soon

Hello Phatdon4u,
As I have always said, you do not need a TOEFL to study in the US. Although there are some schools that require it but all you need to let them know is that you are from an Anglophone country and most schools waive it for you. If a school refuses to Waive TOEFL for you then I will suggest that you do not apply to that school. Your GRE score is very low. I will suggest that you re-take the GRE and aim for about 160 in quantitative and 150 in verbal. This score should make you competitive enough for an assistantship. if you need materials to prepare, you can send an email to gre.nigeria@yahoo.com
As regards our intended graduate course, I do not have any professional advice but I do advice people to apply to courses that are very very very close to what you studied in Nigeria because the admission committee will evaluate your admission eligibility based on your academic background (the courses/classes you have taken) and it is obvious that they will only consider students with closely related backgrounds. so I will suggest that you come in for a Masters in your discipline or a very very closely related discipline. After you might have entered the US and finished your Masters, you can always walk up to the program director of the new course to talk to them. by doing this, your chances of getting into the program is higher relative to when you are in Nigeria. Secondly, you US transcripts from the Masters you just completed in the US will be a good indication of your ability to the admission committee.
Pertaining to your question whether or not your Nigerian Assistantship could influence graduate Assistantship in the US, I do not think so. These are two different systems. A graduate Assistantship in Nigeria means you are in the teaching or lecturing line already but not the same in the US. I wish you all the best

Hello Jemmiee, medicine is more of a second degree in US and Canada. you need to do pre-medicine in a science related course and write MCAT before you can be considered for admission into med school. You also need to pay out of pocket for med school and it's expensive. After graduating med school, you also need to go for about 3 years residency before you can practise at all.

I am not familiar with the educational system in Egypt. However, most Canadian schools that grant toefl exemption list the countries and schools in those country for which they grant toefl exemption. In general, for both US and Canadian universities, you can request for toefl waiver if you are from an anglophone country or you studied in a school where english was the medium of communication or expression. if you studied in a school where english was the medium of expression, you may request the school to give you a letter stating that the medium of expression is in english and submit this letter with your application for admission.

I hope this helps

I have replied to your email.

Hello guys, I have had repeated questions about students who are interested in courses that have little or no funding such as Masters in Public health or MBA. There is a route that you can take to fulfill this dream. It might take a longer time but it will pay off. For example, someone is currently studying economics and would like to come for an MBA without paying out of his or her pocket. That is, that person wants a scholarship for his MBA.

My advice for individuals like this is to come in for a Masters in economics and then proceed to a Ph.D in Economics. While on your Ph.D in Economics for example, you are allowed to minor in related courses such as finance and the department of economics will pay your tuition for the finance classes you are taking. You have four years for your Ph.D, if you take 3 credits of finance classes per semester and you do this for fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, before the end of your Ph.D, you would have taken 36 credits and you only require 30 credits to obtain a masters degree in any field. That means you can complete a Masters degree before you finish your Ph.D and the University will award you your Masters degree (once you complete the 30 credits requirement) and also your Ph.D degree. I know many people who have done this. If you decide to only minor in finance and you do not want a Masters in finance, I think you only need to take about 18 credits which is on the average 6 classes in finance. I know people doing Ph.D in Economics or Agricultural Economics and obtaining a Masters in finance or Statistics. Some that don't want Masters degree took the 6 classes in order to minor in it. I know people doing Ph.D in communications and obtaining a Masters degree in Management and communications department will pay for the Masters in management because they take the classes one at a time with little or know effect on their program schedule. Similarly, someone who did biology, chemistry, microbiology or any science related course could come in directly for the science course and take classes in Public health and their primary department (biology, chemistry, microbiology or any science related course) will pay for the classes through the scholarship they have obtained. It is a longer route but a smarter way to achieve your dream without having to pay out of your pocket. So if you are interested in MBA, you can come in for Masters in the primary course you studied in your home country and when you start your Ph.D, you can do the MBA by the side.

I hope this helps.

Hello Olenime,
Please note that there are no runs. Even if there are ways to do runs, I bet you, you will run out of the program if you come in with the mindset of doing runs because you will not be able to put in your best. I do not question people's ability but what came to mind is that may be you did not use the right set of materials to prepare for the GRE exam. I will suggest that you send an email to gre.nigeria@yahoo.com and will share good GRE materials with you via the dropbox. Those that I have shared the materials with could attest to the fact that the materials are good for GRE preparation and I believe that you will do well with these materials.

Hello Geva,
I do not know much about studying medicine. All I know is that the person will have to write MCAT. You may find more details at https://aamc-orange.global.ssl.fastly.net/production/media/filer_public/42/99/4299a220-8414-497a-8594-5b9b7d962ef1/essentials_2016_-_final_5-20-2016.pdf
