Someone there (either a student or an staff) is repeatedly trying a scam with people's identities. Also contact Hope Aganyi, because he had all her documents in the other thread (admission and dockets). I believe the last time, he also had documents for a male student and that apparently wasn't his first time. We can fish him out.

Both vinehands and humbledbyfaith attend UniCal, dept of biochemistry and stay in Akwa Ibom. Both had issues with family supporting them. Both of them started with a thread that had a sob story, then opened another thread asking for help, in order to seem genuine and gain trust. Too much of a coincidence.

So this person works for or is a student of UniCal. And if we can get an account number, we can try get his/her identity.

At least the school scams are from Uyo. I think beatsbug and gracesome are part of the same thing, but the threads have been removed so I'm not sure. I also think i remember Gracesome was also a school scam and beatsbug was supporting him by pretending to be his friend from school. Can anyone remember? We need to have those threads unlocked. Seun and RoyalRoy, Lalasticlala, can that be done? We need ample evidence.

I don't support the locking and removal of such threads. People forget and then the criminals wait for things to cool off before they come back again and do more damage.

Now she came back trying to scam people of their hard earned money in this change era where there's no money thinking because she rejected the money offered to her in her first thread, she would be vindicated, God she is pathetic.

Check her out on facebook, she claims she goes by the name Hope Aganyi and her profile tallies with all the info she gave, she claims she studied Biochemistry from Unical and it also reflects on her facebook profile. But the question is how can a serving Corp member claim she hasn't been cleared from school? When no be say we nor go school

At some point, I began to think one or some of the moderators are sympathetic to scammers because I remember vividly where a scammer that was caught asked that the thread be deleted and despite all my protests against deleting the thread, a moderator indeed deleted the thread.

They are caught and called out, next thing, thread disappears. After some weeks, they come back with a new id and because their names and account numbers have been earlier deleted, they start a new sob story and catch new mugus.

Looks like we've got some corporate scammers trying it out with bolder moves. So the modus operandi now is:

1. Identity Theft: Get as many personal details as possible, preferably of female university students. Name, student ID, course, department, faculty, year of study, and a few receipts to boost your claim.

2. Cook up a heart wrenching story about dead parents, wicked family members, and spice it up with threats of suicide. Play the humble, suffering victim never responding to direct attacks, but respond with the standard response of I pray you don't go through what I'm experiencing.

3. Request for front page coverage. In the meantime, ramp up the heat by ensuring e-fights between posters. The nastier, the better.

4. Create several monikers, one per stolen identity and post in high traffic sections.

5. Be sure to create several aliases claiming to be "friends" of the sob story thread creators. Take it one step further by pretentious claims of having verified the "plight" to be true.

6. Pretend you're more interested in prayers than financial assistance when asked. Be sure to "reluctantly" accept any money when pressured.

7. Fold arms, sit back, and watch the entertaining cat fights with a chilled bottle of Coke. An increase in the number of fights is directly proportional to the prospective number of magas paying out.

8. Laugh all the way to the bank. Life can be so easy, can't it?

Seun: I think a lot of people on here, including those who've been a victim of online scammers will agree that something drastic needs to be done. How about creating a section specifically to name and shame these online thieves? Their scamming threads should be dumped there. Then a stickied thread showcasing the names and bank details of the scammers should be listed, with a corresponding link to their scamming threads. The only people with access to this main thread should be you and the supermods.

Humbledbyfaith is still active on NL, most likely checking to see how far things will go. I spoke to some people and they gave some suggestions, basically, the solution lies in the hands of the owner of this site.
What I can advise everyone to do, is to NOT give any money to anyone. No matter what. Because your protection is limited (the bank can fish an account as a scam account but they need more details and proof to actually shut it down and alert other banks. Yes, they share information with other banks and bvn has made it easier) and most of us don't have the resources to take this fight.
As for the other accounts, it's left to prove the connection between VineHands and Humbledbyfaith, so the old threads have to be unlocked so a good case can be presented to the right authorities (not the police).
However, when I mentioned the website was Nairaland, some of the people present laughed and explained that this site has a bad reputation for being filled with scammers and the owner of the site allowing things to go unchecked. Which makes honest businesses avoid it and this causes a loss of revenue for the site. I was given an example that some companies monitor it to see if complaints about their products and services come up, but refuse to advertise on it for fear of attracting scammers. Seun, if you read this, you should do something.

But that's not the same as being proactive against fraud. He's almost nonchalant about it.

I guess the lesson to take home is 'don't listen to anyone's sob story anymore'. I would have sworn with any of my handbags that this girl/boy (...who knows) is real. All the dead parents and imaginary brother/sister-in-law stories. With such talent at imaginative writing, why the fellow doesn't go into story book writing is beyond me. Waste of talent.
