Why dont you try ISPON. Formerly called NISP.

After this you can register and become a member. Which is what is regulatory required anyway.

If you are in a hurry then you can try Novelle. If not, I suggest you wait for the 2017 Calendar or call the ISPON Lagos Chair through the number provided by their website:

Thank you so much. I appreciate

1. Yes, 2017 calendar is not out. That was why I said if you are not in a hurry, you could wait for it. Doing these courses with NISP/ISPON gives you some benefits. You become a member easily as you already know their way. NISP/ISPON is popular and the bedrock for professional HSE Training in Nigeria. It has huge sentimental value. ISPON is also now backed by law to regulate the HSE Profession (more on Safety though) in NIGERIA. For the Environmental Part, NES (Nigerian Environmental Society) is trying to charter this profession. It is inundated with quacks and very uninformed people and every dummy claims/calls himself "Consultant" and do EIAs. But for Safety, NISP is taking steps to make the professional practice more regulated.

2. You can't go to the University without going through Secondary School. Yes, you need to do either General HSE or Level 2 before you do Level 3.
Level 3 is considered as a higher level of competence. To get to this Level, you need to pass through one of the foundation/lower levels.

Let me give you my case. I have an MSc. In Safety Engineering from a Grande Ecole in France. However, I needed to do Level 2 before 3. This is even when I was busy during the ISPON classes correcting many of the erroneous impressions e.g. that "Hazards are bad and useless and so must be eliminated" during the ISPON Lecture. I had to inform them that Hazards are not "useless", we need them to get things done. E.g temperature in a process. Heat Exchangers, High Drilling Rigs/Platforms above water etc., But the hazards can be controlled and maintained using technical and managerial means of protection with appropriate levels of reliability. That is why we have mitigation actions to eliminate cause and/or mitigation actions to reduce consequences. It is also based on whether you are working from a Deterministic or Probabilistic School of thought. NISP/ISPON was too rudimentary for me. But I listened, participated, stepped in when I needed to. And I listened attentively in class because I knew I would also learn new things or refresh my memory. Even NEBOSH IGC was very rudimentary for me. It was NEBOSH IDip that came a little close to my level of competence (Higher than Level 8 ).

So, if you have the finances, do the General then Level 3.

Unfortunately, I don't know the rules of Novelle Center. Whether they also have same rules like ISPON/NISP. But you can call them to find out. Then you can take a pick.

Cheers.

It takes about 7 Weeks for NEBOSH IDip. 6 Weeks for classes. 1 week for exams (actually, about 3 days). Once you register, you must complete the courses within 5 years. So it is not a rush rush thing. But why wait till then?

Each of Modules A,B,C are quite huge. Materials used to teach were about 600 pages per module. Giving about 1800 pages. It is like doing NEBOSH IGC, but with newer stuff on Risk Assessment using techniques like FMEA, Fault tree analysis, etc.

There are 4 units, A,B,C and D. Unit D is more like a Thesis. An 8000 words written assignment on the application of HSE Theory and Practice. Most times focusing on an industry, organization or company.

It can be done in class or via distance learning/online. Depending on what suits you.

Cost depends on country and period. It won't be the same price with today. Notice the grey hair on my head? Hahahahaha. Cost also varies with country and trainer as well. IDip is not done in Nigeria for now. Well, the last time I checked. E.g Shields in the UK takes 1,450 Pounds nowadays.

Individual Opinion - Novelle is wonderful (Uk standard)
But if you want to practice safety in Nigeria *i think* you need ispon's certification... The situation where ispon's HSE training aren't needed are where Nebosh IGC or any other internationally recognised cert is required

So, thats that

Novelle as we know it is endorsed/recognized by ISPON etc. as training providers.

The question we should ask ourselves is:

WILL ISPON REGISTER US AS MEMBERS WITHOUT PARTICIPATING IN THEIR LEVELS 1,2, & 3 HSE COURSES?

If ISPON can register members as HSE Professionals without attending their specific ISPON training centers for HSE Levels 1,2 and 3, then it is best to patronize Novelle and then apply to ISPON for membership afterwards.

Best is to call ISPON and clarify on the requirements for becoming a member of ISPON/NISP.

At a time I believe that one had to do the following to become a member

1. Level 3 HSE certificate - IS THIS FROM ISPON OR ANY ACCREDITTED TRAINING SCHOOL?
2. Apply for membership
3. Write membership exams
4. Write and defend a project on HSE, most times on Safety. The defense is in form of an interview.

Based on score it is determined if on is qualified.

What we need to know is if ISPON WILL ACCEPT LEVEL 3 HSE certification from any training school or must it be theirs.

ISPON wouldn't accept... Basic requirement for membership is that you must have completed GHSE and HSE level 3 with them... This cert are to be photocopied and attached to the membership form (29,000)
Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by aamstih: 5:42am On Jan 28, 2017
True. To be a practicing safety professional in Nigeria, you need to be a member of ISPON (according to the ISPON Act) and to be a member of ISPON, you must present your GHSE and Level 3 (ISPON certs) for documentation.
