Get yourself A-Z then A1
Read newspapers, novels and watch English series. I don't think if you boycott yoruba movies, you will be better cos it's your native language. You just need to watch more of Hollywood movies or series. Don't just read a novel to understand the storyline, read to understand the use of english. If you come across any strange word, do well to check your dictionary. I mean make your dictionary your companion

Watch more of American movies and English Hollywood. It helps. Trust me...

I would recommend that u read more of novels...newspapers and there's this book...common mistakes in English. I have forgotten the author, it will help u to improve because it helped me too.

Reading lots of English books will help you. Stop much use of your dialet whenever you with your people.

Read a lot of novels. u would be just fine.

Watch BBC, listen to BBC World service when you less busy. Read novels and educational articles with good vocabularies. And also get a notebook to write down new big words (old school)/ bookmark the big word on your phone dictionary. Learn how to use the big words small small when conversing.

Your spot on. Suits has a lot of words that people could learn. When there's someone like Mike Ross .

Just pay attention to people when they speak in English Lang...Listen to Radio, Watch TV programs and don't feel bad being brought with any dialect...Most of the great people of the World were brought that way...It's simple adaptation to Societal demands... And Always take a deep breath...speak English Lang slowly and you will master it well...Mind you..most of all are mere aping the Language Speakers...Engage in discussion slowly in English Language gauging you points and facts before hand...And do forget to correct yourself immediately openly...it works Confidence in you..Cheers

1.Read good novels. Things like Dickens, Eliot, and good Nigerian writers like Achebe, Soyinka, Tutuola, Aluko, ALkali, etc. Carry a dictionary to find the meaning of unusual words.

2.Read aloud as much as possible in class, and frequently(ie if you are in school)...during English class.

3.Speak in English with others for at least two hours a day

5.Listen to the BBC and watch the BBC

Stop visiting nairaland and you are good to go

Read books and watch the news. Then everyday make sound clips about anything that you like using proper English. That's what I did

Never feel emnarassed when you get it wrong . I envy you in some ways putting yourself out here in this fashion . It might also interest you to note some English people cannot speak proper and correct English . Some can't even read . So read more and watch more English series . Download prescribed apps and use online vocal dictionaries .

Download British movies e.g Rock ND Rolla,Trainspotting,London Boulevard etc.Watch ND listen to them over ND over again.
Also practice speaking with good English with ur family,friends ND peers.They will laugh at you when you start but ignore them,after 2-3 years when you are grounded with good English speaking,u can return to Yoruba....You will b so use to speaking good ND correct English that sometimes when you speak your dialect with them you will unconsciously switch to good English.

I agree...but being bilingual, or even trilingual (like my mom who speaks English and two Nigerian languages , including our own fluently) is also a good advantage.....

I agree with your submission, but I disagree with the texts above. Your mother's tongue first before others. Aside the British, American, Canadian and Australian most people from other countries speak their language first. The subtitling might be bad anyway.

He should avoid Yoruba movies, he said he was brought up with Yoruba so he clearly doesn't have problems understand the Yoruba language or culture.
