Are you suggesting he shouldn't pay a thank you visit to the Sultan of Sokoto who for the first time sent his transitional Dunbar outside the north to come and perform at the pleasure of the Oba of Benin. Emir of Kano, Obi of Onitsha, Katsina, Borno, Delta, Rivers, Cross Rivers, Bayesa, Yoruba Community and many more sent down their traditional cultural dancers, the entire Nigeria was involved in the coronation in one way or the other. So the nationwide thank you visit is very necessary and important and the Edo people are not ungrateful people. There is a saying in Edo language that he who says thank you is encouraging his benefactors to do more.

Even when he did, it was either top secret or he was leading his army into battle in which case he had the full complement of security around him. You don't expect an ambush in the present day unlike in the old days when they used to follow bush paths to get from Benin to Ife for example. Times have changed. People should give us Binis a break. The fact remains that the monarchy is still the most apolitical in the country. It took him a whole year after coronation to start moving around. Which other monarch's visit to Abuja has generated more interest from the public?

I'm an Edo man, but I'm not a royalist. That's exactly how I would handle it if it happens to me. He won't get her and I will embarrass him. Everyone deserves to have their rights respected. To the oba, his rights; to my daughter, her rights.

The saying that "oba no dey go transfer" has really been misunderstood. It doesn't necessarily mean the Oba doesn't leave his seat. It simply means the means the kingship in Benin can't just be changed like others by the government.
He is not the first Oba to have been engaged in a nationwide thank you visit. The previous Oba did. So, I really don't see the reason for the comments above.

In 2004 when the late Oba of Benin officially launched his book on Benin - Ife connection in Benin, a friend of mine from Benin told me that Oba of Benin does not leave Edo land by tradition. We were in Benin that night some old people gave us various reasons, Oba does not move outside Edo land.People only pay him homage or visit.That was the first time I will hear it. I remembered I have not seen the Oba on TV in any official meeting anywhere. They said he is like god.

I am a Prince in Yoruba land (Ijebu) & know quite well that the practice of King remaining in a place for the rest of stay on throne cannot survive the 21st century. He agreed with me.

Things have changed. At Ife, the Ooni used to be in seclusion for 90 days for spiritual communications before celebrating the OLOJO day. I am not sure if that was possible during the reign of Ooni Sijuwade who was very busy business & social wise as a prince with contacts spanning many countries.

I rejoiced with Edo traditional council & the Oba Ile Ado. Ki Ade pe l'ori.
