Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has presented the sum of N190billion budget proposal for the 2018 fiscal year.

The governor presented the appropriation bill at the hallowed chambers of the Imo State House of Assembly on Wednesday in Owerri, the state capital.

He said in the proposal, titled ‘Budget of Consolidation and Continuity III’, capital expenditure stands at N132billion representing 69.7% while recurrent expenditure stands at N57billion representing 30.3% of the total budget.

Governor Okorocha informed the lawmakers that the budget is higher than that of 2017 with about N59billion.

According to him, the 2018 budget will provide a realistic platform for the attainment of his administration’s development goals.

He added that it would also give hope and practical support to the youths who are key to the state’s prosperous future.

The governor further appealed to the State House of Assembly to expedite action for quick passage of the budget.

This is Amaraku town in Mbano which is one among dozens of semi-urban settlements in Imo State where Okorocha is presently busy.

Ongoing transformation of all major roads in the old part of the city. With the relocation of New Market work will soon start on Douglas which is the only place that has remained untouched by Okorocha Government.

What is delaying the demolition of new market after traders has already vacated and the structures vandalised? If it is left the way it is now, hoodlums could turn it into their operational base and terrorize people. Also, I just observed a new pattern whereby refuse are being dumped at virtually every corner and along major roads like whetheral or is it okporo uzo dee Sam Mbakwe and Douglas road, it is fast becoming an eye sore and something should b done about it immediately or else it will take the sail out of Owerri's growing reputation as Nigeria's best kept secret and most beautiful city!

There is no difference between these backgrounds and abroad Biko. Rochas really has taste and foresight, I can envision a situation whereby rich Nigerians and not just Igbos alone will be flocking into Owerri to live and enjoy peace of mind. Driving on the roads of Owerri now whether in the day or at night is so sweet that you will feel like driving around aimlessly without getting to your destination just to savour the mesmerizing feeling. Posterity will most likely judge Rochas positively after the pains and sacrifice made by the people subsides. It really takes a lot of guts for any governor to take the bull by the horns and do what Rochas did for the future good of Owerri. Others would have played to the gallery so they won't be called bad names. You really can't make omelets without breaking eggs!

Majority of Igbo rich men and women abandoned the SE for Lagos, Abuja and P.Harcourt because no where was befitting enough for them to reside but with what is happening in Owerri now courtesy of Rochas, I foresee many of them relocating to Owerri for good. Calabar, P Harcourt and Enugu have been overtaking while Owerri now has its sights on Abuja and would soon be running neck and neck with the FCT!!

Let me first say, i commend Rochas for the massive improvement of Owerri. But he still needs to do more to complete the transformation through serious landscaping and generous use of pine trees and palm trees to green up the entire city.

Rochas should take landscaping and planting of trees seriously and extend runway of SMICA by 300 meters to reach 3KM to receive international flights.

Most Nigeria cities look like pile of concrete sh*t except parts of Enugu and Abuja because those two cities took landscaping seriously. Owerri at best will look like Minna where there are good wide roads but looks bare and dry without enough trees and flowers along every road and roundabout.

Unless you take measures to green up the city and plant palm and other aesthetic trees in the median and around most roads in Owerri, the city will always look dry and bare as opposed to looking like a relaxing and welcoming place in the pictures below.

Have you been to new Owerri to see the large green spaces provided? I believe you saw that picture someone snapped from Concord hotel balcony, is the background any different from the pictures of abroad you showed? I've been to Enugu on several occasions, and if there is any city in dire need of greenery then it's Enugu because of its lateritic soils that is not appealing and always churns out dust. Even Abuja does not have more greens than new Owerri except maybe Maitama area. You're becoming a little too critical about Owerri, you don't except the trees that were planted to grow that same instant.

This has been repeatedly overemphasized but still little regards are given to such things,

This very little things make a great deal of difference, with ornamental trees and flower planting the land scape takes a whole new vibe and esthetically beautify the location.

The environment conforms to how we keep it,
A place might not necessarily need all the skyscrapers on mother earth, but with well kept greenery, a whole new look makes it refreshing, appealing and mesmerizing.

It is more like a South East thing, save for enugu to some extent, our governments should make tree and flower planting a huge priority and if possible part of electoral campaign, and the legislative arm should makes laws on this issue, while the executive should enforce it,

Back in secondary school in abj, all schools had mandate to partake in tree and flower planting exercise in Abuja, and since elrufai left, seems like he left with the midas touch,

Honestly this issue means a whole lot, if our governments can make it a top priority,

If they begin, surely the general populace will key in

Abagworo, biko i don't have your time.

I am not here to say Enugu is finer than Owerri and those childish stuff you and Chino do. Actually, the new Governor Ugwuanyi in Enugu is tasteless and has truly disappointed because he does not maintain the city nor even plant more trees to complement what Sullivan Chime did to transform the city.

Again let me restate that i commend Rochas for his excellent work in bringing Owerri to almost a world class city, yet more needs to happen and i will not be afraid to say it. Massive landscaping effort is yet to be seen driving through Owerri. Even the heros arcade where the statues are should have dedicated landscapers to make the place a first class park environment and not just the few palm trees planted infront of the statues. Landscaping is what differentiates Nigerian cities from cities in South Africa, USA,France, Korea or abroad. Our typical building truly ain't bad, just that our cities lack enough vegetation cover to appear conducive for holidaying and business.

If you look at the pictures taken by the first guy in new Owerri, you will notice it has trees that why you subconsciously liked it without knowing it was the beautiful landscaping you like and not just because it has dual carriage way, which is also found on Douglas road.

All i have said and continue to say as highlighted by many others here who have been abroad is that concrete alone does not equate to beautiful city as Nigerians tend to think. Port Harcourt for example may be bigger and has more economic activities than Owerri or Calabar or Enugu, yet, it is an ugly city. Don't want to mention Lagos cos you already get the point.

When Akpabio did his transformation of Uyo, one thing he never forgot was landscaping of all his roads, roundabouts, flyovers, hotels etc. It all adds up to make a place look first world than third world.

Spare us some of these Nigeria this and that "misyarn". Aren't these London and New York? We should appreciate our cities and improve on them but not write bold lies to discredit our cities. BTW Owerri is probably the greenest city in Nigeria. By the time Okorocha is done with the old parts it will be greener than ever.

New Owerri wasn't Rochas' idea, it was achike Udenwa's ...again Owerri has always been beautiful since the time of Sam Mbakwe (in fact,Owerri use to be the most beautiful city in Nigeria in the 70/80s as I was told) Rochas is just adding round about, statues and opening up/ constructing a few inner/link roads, which is changing the face of Owerri, and deserves commendation.

But all that he's doing is just a fraction of Owerri and its limited. What of Mbaise road, Egbu road, MCC road, Douglas road, Amakioha etc are they not part of Owerri?

Only a person who has not been to Owerri or an indomie generation kid will ascribe the beauty of Owerri to Rochas...even Ohakim did a lot of tree planting with his clean and green idea which is why New Owerri has at least a decent level of greeny

The flyover before Orji was Ohakim's project, it good Rochas didnt abandon it....

So all in all, Rochas is just changing the face of Owerri which is commendable, but not the architect of the beauty of Owerri.

Abagbworo I would have loved to see Rochas opening up the inner towns and villages by linking them with 3lane roads to Owerri...

I love to see a three lane road with streetlights and flowers linking Owerri-Mbaise, Owerri-Orlu, Owerri-Okigwe, Owerri-Obowo...etc....link them all till you get to the boundary with the neighboring state.

Infact, if Rocha's doesn't do it, it should be the next agenda of the incoming government.

You're right as government should be a continuum. He has linked Owerri to Naze and Owerri to Nwaorieubi heading to Orlu. with 4 lanes dual carriageway which is a good starting point. Moving all markets out of Owerri to Naze, Nekede and Egbeada has helped push commercial activities to those towns and current restriction of Keke inside Owerri means keke will now operate in the other towns outside the city. In a nutshell Owerri has been decongested but with negative effects on the poor who may no longer afford to live in the city. I think that's why some people are not happy as they will now have to live in Nekede, Eziobodo, Orogwe, Mbieri, Orji, Egbu, Irete, Obinze, Ihiagwa, Ubomiri and Naze instead of the city itself but that's development for you. In Abuja the upper middle class and political class mostly live in the city while the poor live outside.
