The consultant we trained in Nigeria, US or other developed country will appoint him/her as a medical Officer and still undergo US fellow. Everything is Nigeria is abnormal as an MO you're not practice independently you're to be under a senior colleague to under study or only attend to out patient but here in Nigeria they will feel there a superior and still be requesting for sensitivity test candida spp 1 Like |

SctDonald: It's obvious you don't really know what is obtainable yet arguing. medical undergraduate program is divided into two. 1 Basic medicine 2. clinical medicine. only Consultants teach medical students in their clinical years. in basic medicine, u can have a combination of anatomist, physiologist, biochemists & doctors who decided to go through Msc, PhD. while Doctors in basic medicine are required to go through the Msc program & PhD, their clinical counterparts are consultants who have met the criteria to be one. What we are saying is that u don't force dis consultants to get PhD cos the residency program they went through is higher than PhD & they have much knowledge then their PhD counterparts in the profession. It is easier to get a PhD than it is to be a consultant. 5 Likes |

edoairways:..for instance, A medical laboratory scientist, can decide to go into lecturing or clinical practice.. If you want to practice, work in the hospital, you will get your promotion and everything that is attached to you as a practicing medical laboratory scientist.. You can also further your studies, like get your Msc and PhD but you must remain in your defined path, but if you want to change into lecturing, that means you have nothing to do with clinical practice in that hospital, except you own a private lab or a private hospital decides to employ you.. This analogy is also obtained in other fields of studies.. Hence, NUC is pushing hard to make so for medical doctors.. |

NOL2dworld: The pay does not correlate with the service they render. Imagine a Chief medical Director /Consultant with over 20 years surgical experience earning less than 1.5M monthly, whereby someone in the Oil, Telecom, IT, Banking,Legal, Account /consulting industry earn twice as that with minimal experience. Practicing medicine /dentistry /psychiatry and pharmaceuticals in this country is not financially rewarding unless you're friends of the government. |

kowalsky:...your problem is that you don't know the true definition of hatred or envy.., if you do,, you wouldn't have typed those words... In clinical classes, 400 level to 600 level.., you don't need Anatomists or physiologist to lecture them. What you need is a man who have defined his path in any of the branches of medicine.. What NUC is trying to do, is if you want to become O&G lecturer, you should move through that line and become a prof...,but if you want to practice your O&G,follow that path and get to any level you want to but keep to either lecturing or practice... This will help reduce founding, and capture those who have been scamming FG.. |

SctDonald: Since they consider FG irrelevant to their practice, they've withdrawn their services in the university. let's now see how Nigeria will produce doctors from now on they NUC refuse to meet their demands. You think clinical lecturers lecture in the classroom most of the time? No single lecturer spends more than 2hrs in a lecturer room in the hospital (except he has outstanding lectures). The bulk of the lectures happen in ward rounds (where he can spend 5-8hrs teaching students), in the theater, in the clinics where students can spend as much as 9hrs or even more with him. so what are you saying? 4 Likes |

Freddonance:...The only mistake NUC did is the forcing of the consultants to obtain PhD.. You can't send them back to something that is less than what they have.. I think, what need to be done is to scrutinized the system properly because many or some of them who aren't gotten to that level are lecturing clinical classes..That is what NUC is also trying to purge off from the system.. And don't tell me consultants don't lecture basic medicine courses to medical students.., 60% of my lecturers at UNN, college of medicine are consultants, especially courses like Anatomy, embryology, Histology, Physiology.. And most of them do say it in class that year to us that we have chosen one of the best career path... |

Iretii0511:It's a lie. They won't gain more from a consultant with Ph.D. This is because they do extensive research during residency more than they do in Ph.D training. What I see is that other non-medical professors felt that doctors are treated like gods. That's why they don't have Ph.D as they (Ph.D holders) had, but they forgot that master's and Ph.D training aren't as rigorous and knowledge-driven as residency training. 2 Likes |

CSTR2:You're just a stark illiterate. Cardiology has nothing to do with the design of artificial heart. This can be done by engineers and cardiothoracic surgeons. Just go to UNTH, Enugu and see what a Nigerian cardiothoracic surgeon, Prof. Aghagbo, was able to do. And he was awarded the NNOM (Nigerian National Order of Merit) for his ground-breaking scientific discoveries in cardiothoracic surgery. He's also a visiting lecturer to some universities in America and Britain. Google it and stop making fool of yourself. He did only residency. What are the cutting-edge discoveries of the Ph.D holders in Nigeria?. 3 Likes 1 Share |

SctDonald: Some surgeons are of the opinion that anatomy classes should not be left for anatomist alone as they bombard students with much anatomy than is necessary in real clinical practice; that more emphasis should be on clinical application on the anatomic structure. maybe that's the reason you see some of them lecturing anatomy 1 Like |

SctDonald:I get your point but the consultants have wealths of knowledge they gat pass to the students because they have been in practice for a long and have a lota cases.. it can never be same with a PhD medical doctor... Common. Medicine is a practical apprenticeship course not a practical one... okay, unless you want them to start producing mediocre doctors. You have killed medical practice if that thing push common. |

CSTR2:those with Ph.D holders cannot win it either. Hatred is what is eating you all up. Without funding, the knowledge cannot be put into use. It's still our medical doctors that graduated from here that go abroad and do exploits. That American-based Nigerian pediatric surgeon, Dr Olutoye, graduated from OAU. He travelled to America and did residency and fellowship that made him do exploits. It wasn't Ph.D he got there that made him do that. |

CSTR2:Show us the link to where it was published. Besides, that research isn't novel. Building a feasible reactor that can convert common sawdust to usable liquid fuel has been done many times. And till today, it's still not feasible for domestication in Nigeria. Consultants have done researches that led to improvement in surgical procedures. Prof. Aghagbo, a cardiothoracic surgeon at UNTH Enugu is one surgeon whose innovations in cardiothoracic surgery earned him the highest award in scientific research in Nigeria called NNOM (Nigerian National Order of Merit). Some other medical professors have won the award too. Some modifications in maxillofacial surgery were done by one maxillofacial surgeon at UNN, Prof. Chima Oji. The technique is called the Oji technique and other foreign maxillofacial surgeons use it too. The other one was done by a Yoruba maxillofacial surgeon. All these surgeons did only residency. 2 Likes |

Re: 300 Medical Consultants Withdraw Services From UCH, University Of Ibadan by kowalsky: 5:12pm On Feb 27, 2020 |
SctDonald: Again. Hate has blinded your objectivity. How do you become an O/G lecturer? Is there a Phd. Program for O/G? I'll answer for you. You need to complete a residency program in O/G. Upon completion you become a consultant free to practice in whatever hospital you deem fit. So, no this policy by NUC was not in any way intended to diverge the career paths of clinical practice and lecturing. Because regardless of whatever precedents doctors will first obtain competence in clinical practice before they are ever fit to tutor on clinical practice. |

For medical students, becoming good doctors lies on there ability to merge the general medical knowledge(basic medical and clinical sciences) and CLINICAL SKILLS thought them in the wards, clinics, theaters, ER etc in patient management. PhD sounds good on paper but is in reality not readily applicable to core clinical skills training of different medical sub specialities. Residency training is a combination of supervised CLINICAL SKILL ACQUISITION and individualized CLINICAL RESEARCH carried out over a minimum given time period usually 4 to 10 years in the relevant sub speciality. It involves at least one full thesis and depending on the speciality and college 10 to 20 evidence based research inspiring case reports. The training is split in two parts with a full clinical/lab research thesis written in one or both parts. It is much more advanced than a PhD offered in any Nigerian university. 1 Like |

Iretii0511: No. But I think that if I were to have a surgical operation, I would prefer that my surgeon be guided by a consultant with 20 years practical experience actually performing such surgeries over a doctor with a mere Phd who has spent more time behind a desk writing up research reports, and is still unsure of the difference between the back and front ends of the scalpel. 1 Like |
