Lol

If a striker is playing striker does it change anything?

For it to be false, it has to be a midfielder playing as a striker.

Abeg nor argue semantics with me. I pass that level.
In other words, Messi, Firmino, Kane, Griezmann Benzema have never played as false 9 in their career. Only Fabregas, Bernado silva, Foden and Havertz have done that.

Fantastic football knowledge.

You quoted a simple definition I gave just to discredit me with an epistle. Imagine putting up all those words just to explain false 9.

My simple definition is a midfielder playing upfront. That is the player possesses the skills of a midfielder but is positioned as a striker. You mentioned them as dribbling, ball control, creativity etc.

The examples you gave also justified my claims. Bernado, Messi, Bellingham etc were all midfielders in advanced roles.

Also as you said that a striker drops deep could be due to lack of seeing the ball not necessarily because he has to. In a low block the striker will have less of the ball and will drop deep but he will always be the most advanced player in his team. For a false 9 it is his duty and not just him doing it. Even strikers drop deep to defend. That doesn't make them false 9s.

There is a difference between a midfielder in an advanced role and a striker dropping deep. The bolded is what's a false 9. Common sense will tell you that if he is a striker already there's no point calling him false. It a midfielder is playing midfield will you call him false 10? Makes no sense. The false in that term is because he is not a striker in the first place.

Kane drops deep because that's his pattern not because the coach wants him to. Even at Spurs he does that too. We cannot look at Harry Kane in a team and say he is playing false 9 because he drops deep at times. Kane does that simply to evade markers. That's his pattern. But when you have Kane in your team you don't say he is a false 9. That would be stupid. You can easily replace Kane with Lewandoski, does that change anything? No. If you substitute Kane with Chipo Moting will he also drop deep? No.
Lol 😂

Spy360:

First of all, what is a false 9?

Let's start from there because it seems you probably are using a wrong term to describe what you want.

A false 9 is a midfielder playing upfront. Like Cesc Fabregas for Barcelona those days.

Harry Kane for all intent is a striker, a 9 and not a false 9 please.
May be you didn't get the definition right which misinformed all of us.

Funny enough, you are the one who is misinformed about false 9. If the bolded is your definition of false 9, I’m not surprised to see you state that Harry Kane is not a false 9. By your definition, Messi, Firmino and even Benzema never played as false 9 too.

So what is a false 9?

A long read.

A false 9 is still a 9 but whose roles (which include dropping into the midfield to link up play, creating chances, and making timing run to finish chances) transcends the conventional target man a traditional 9 is known for.

It’s just like the inverted left or right back or wing back thing we now have. Are they not defenders? Of course they are defenders but with more roles outside of defending.

A traditional 9 mostly camp upfront when his team is in possession and without possession as he is the target man for goal. A traditional 9 doesn’t need to share the burden of linking up play, winning possession, creating chances for other team players or come deep into the midfield.

His main aim is to score, and all his energy is usually channelled towards positioning himself upfront to receive the ball from teammates (who mostly look for him) at suitable position so he could score. This is evident is traditional 9 like Lewandowski, Haaland and others.

On the other hand, a false 9 is not necessarily or always the target man as goal scoring burden is expected to be shared with other attackers. A false 9 doesn’t have to score plenty of goals like a traditional striker because one of his role is to assist his teammates to get goal scoring chances just as the teammates are expected to do the same for him.

So how does a false 9 do it?

When their team is in possession, a false 9 timely drops into the midfield to link up play with teammates while luring defenders with them so he could create goalscoring opportunities for other teammates or allow teammates to exploit the spaces left behind by the defenders he lured out. Messi does this a lot.

A False 9 join the midfield to increase overload in the midfield to help build up play towards dominating opposition and creating goal scoring chances. Traditional 9s hardly do this unless it’s necessary. This mostly happens when a traditional 9 is starved of the ball as he relies on their teammates to feed him to score. We could see what happened to Osimhen during the last AFCON.

While dropping deep to advanced midfield role to build up play, a False 9 also has to make a quick run into the penalty area when the ball is in the final third so he could position themselves for goal scoring opportunities and actually score the chances that comes to him like a traditional 9. This particular attribute is what makes Messi one the best false 9 ever with Kane coming very close.

So what happens when false 9 teams are not in possession?

When their team are not in possession, a false 9 stays upfront to press for ball like a traditional 9 while also helping defensively when needed like a traditional 9.

Most strikers don’t flourish as False 9s because they need to:
- have great ball control skill
- be able to dribble or take on other players in tight position
- have intelligent movement and smart timing runs into the final third and midfield
- have the ability to make varied passes especially in tight position amongst other attributes.
- have intelligent positioning skill.

Now, despite the fact they regularly drop back into advanced midfield positions in order to create chances, false 9s are still expected to be clinical in front of goal like any good center forward would be.

Only few strikers can do all these e.g Messi, Kane, Benzema. The problem now is that many other strikers are gifted with one of two attributes that makes a good false 9 but poor in others. That is why many of us were worried that Gabriel Jesus might be misfiring because he had to drop deep to link up play.

Some creative midfielders tend flourish in the false 9 role (especially those with great finishing and intelligent movement) because they are already skilled in the midfield role and have some attributes of a good striker (finisher and intelligent positioning). That is why a players like Debruyne, Foden, Bellingham, Bernado silva might perform well in that role while many other fantastic midfielders might struggle in the role.

So you saying a false 9 is a midfielder playing upfront using that Fabregas example and denying Kane as a false 9 is wrong. It only makes it look like a false 9 has to be a midfielder and strikers can’t play as a false 9.

Exactly. It’s like keeping a Messi or Cristiano on the bench when the team needs a goal while NIco Jackson stays on the pitch to keep miss sitter upon sitter.

As you’ve rightly stated, unless what is at stake is personal and bigger than the expected glory, it doesn’t make sense at all.

People seem to forget Manu Garba's deliberate sabotage of his own team at the 2015 U20 WC. Benching attack-oriented lads who would have helped us go far in the tournament. Benched Iheanacho, Yahaya, Success, and co just to prove a point that ended up being pointless.

Couldn't last beyond a season at Gombe Utd. At least Amunike did two-three seasons at Ocean Boys and a season at Julius Berger.

Please... you may not like Amunike but enough of the selective slander.

I respect Manu for his work at U17 level in 2007 snd 2013 but he too has failed at same U17 level in 2016-2017 and barely scrapped together a team in 2019 that fumbled badly at the WC.

This latest Manu Appointment as U17 coach again is his chance to redeem himself. Thankfully he will have two sound tacticians as his assistants. Like DaveP suggested, Olumide Ajibolade is good enough to head that team while Manu excused but it is what it is. Hoping for the best.
I still can’t forgive him for what he did to that 2015 U-20 team against Germany. We had the players to beat Germany, but Manu decided to sabotage the team with his stupid selection and substitutions.

After a mediocre episode 4, X-men 97 episode 5 came with a bang. It started out as a casual episode but suddenly turned dark with banger lines.

I’m glad the show doesn’t revolve around wolverine, Jean, and mystique doing and saying the cool things like the movies. Other characters like Cyclops, Gambit, and Rogue are getting memorable screen time too.

The way he was smiling after the game makes you know he achieved his aim. You cannot ask you wingers to defend for 75mins and still claim to plan to win.

Note that I am arguably Arteta's biggest fan here. I am being objective. He didn't plan to win. I am not against it, it's just that especially seeing how it panned out I feel we could have gone for the kill from the start.
He went for “let’s ensure we do not concede and see if we could hit them with one goal and go back to ensuring we do not concede.”

I don’t like this draw, I no go lie and I am unsure why many are already convinced we are better angry Do we have the quality to compete against Bayern? Yes, but Bayern in the Bundesliga is different from Bayern in the UCL.

Tuchel may be horrible in the league but man is a beast when it comes to UCL knockout. A lot of Bayern fans including those who want him out are worried he may walk his way to the UCL final and that would complicate his dismissal, especially if he wins it.

Amongst the top teams, they are the ones, along side Madrid I least wanted because of the quality of their team, experience and pedigree in the competition. I worry a lot about our inexperience at all levels.

We absolutely can’t lose the first leg or lose by a large margin because this Bayern side have tremendous quality especially in their transition play going forward. We just have to give ourselves a chance in both legs. This isn’t going to be a walk over but like I said earlier, we have the quality to give a chance.

#COYG
We have to beat the best to be the best. There is no way around it in the champions league. One of the things I like about Klopp’s Liverpool is how they go into any tie with the mentality of winning. I believe we currently have that kind of mentality. In the past, we use to give up after a draw like this is made.

Winning Bayern’s challenge will mentally prepare the team against eventual winner between Man City and Real Madrid (who are past winners in last 5 years).

I kind of like the draw. If Arsenal eventually find itself in the final, no one would say it was an easy route because we had to test ourself against former champions of the competition consecutively. I just hope that our attack turns up (especially Odegaard, Saka, and Martinelli) and our defence does their job.

If we really want to prove our worth as a solid team in Europe, here is our chance to do so.

I am optimistic.

The remaining fixtures for the top 3 title contender.
I feel it’s going to be very close till the end. The point difference between the 3 clubs may not be more than 3 points at the end of the season.

Arsenal’s major challenge now is Newcastle, Chelsea, Man city, Brighton, Aston Villa, and Man United. If our boys can turn up in those matches, we should be close to winning the title.

In fact, our next match against Newcastle is very crucial to the team to boost their morale. If we can see off Newcastle, then Chelsea and Man city in March, I believe we have all it takes to win the title from there.
