Politics / Nigerian Navy Rescues 13 Foreigners From Sea Pirates In Rivers by 247frolic(m): 8:09am On Aug 20, 2016
The Nigerian Navy has foiled an attempt by suspected sea pirates to hijack and abduct 13 foreign nationals on board a merchant ship leaving Nigeria for Cameroon.

Briefing journalists on Friday at Bonny, Rivers, Capt. Mustapha Hassan, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Nwamba, who led the rescue operation, said the 13 foreigners were rescued unharmed.

Hassan said the crew members, including the ship’s captain, were of mixed nationalities consisting of seven Philippinos, two Romanians, one Russian, one Polish, one Indian and one Croatian.

Hassan said that troops were unable to apprehend the pirates due to poor visibility partly caused by torrential rain on the day of the rescue.

He said that the navy under the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, remained committed to the safety of the nation’s waterways and maritime environment.

Crime / PHOTO: My Pastor Pushed Me To Sell Stolen Car – Suspect Nabbed By RRS Confesses by 247frolic(m): 6:38pm On Aug 07, 2016
A 35 year old man arrested by the operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command, has insisted that his pastor pushed him into selling of stolen vehicle.

The suspect, Olawale Olabinwonnu, working with Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Igbogbo, Ikorodu, as an administrative officer, was arrested by RRS Intelligence Team on Tuesday for trying to sell a Nissan Sentra, 2015 Model, stolen at gun-point.

The original vehicle number was changed to a fake one (APP 510 DW) in order to sell it. It was recovered on Monday, August, 1st 2016 at a car park in Lekki, Lagos. The man who took the custody of the vehicle came forward to welcome before he was arrested. He assisted the police in the arrest of its marketer in Ikorodu several days later.

Olawale sensed something was wrong with the vehicle, parked out of his Ikorodu residence and office along with his family to evade arrest. He was tracked on Sunday to another church in Ikorodu where he was arrested last Sunday after church service.

The vehicle, which is owned by one of the first generation banks in the country, was reported stolen at gun point when robbers invaded an hotel in Iju-Ishaga area where the manager of the bank was lodging. The robbers were reported to have requested for the car key from the banker before making away with it along with other valuables.

According to Olawale, “the vehicle was given to me to sell by Ahmed Abbey. I met him at Dammy Jay Hotel, Ikorodu. I went there to drink and he came to my table, bought drinks for everybody. That was how I liked him... When I was going home, I told him I was going home and he gave me N2, 000. Those were moments I was struggling and I had no job... I saw Abbey later that week to explain how he could help me get some money because I had no job. This was the time he asked me if I could help his sister ,who was travelling overseas to sell her car. And, I told him that I would try... I consulted my pastor twice on the issue of helping him sell a car. First, the pastor told me to go ahead and collect the car from him and sell it. I took the car from Abbey and began to market it but after about three weeks, I couldn’t get a buyer. He took the car from me...

"Some weeks later, I stumbled on him with the car and he challenged me that I didn’t want to help his sister sell her car... After a while, we agreed that I will help him to look for buyer. I consulted my pastor again for him to pray about it. This time, the pastor introduced me to somebody in Lekki who has a car park at a very conspicuous place, where we can put the car for sale... It was here the car was until I learnt that the car was stolen at gun-point... Since I was arrested, I have been calling Abbey to come and explain to the police that he gave me the car to sell, but most of the time, he avoided my calls, at times, he switched off his phone... Presently, he's no longer picking any call on that line,” he added.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, noted that the suspect is helping the Police with investigation, adding that efforts are on-going to arrest others. The suspect along with the vehicle has been transferred to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigations.

Business / Why Naira Will Keep Falling Against The Dollar by 247frolic(m): 4:07pm On Jul 29, 2016
The Nigerian Naira, quite obviously, has been depreciating steadily against major currencies (dollar, pounds, etc) of the world over the past few decades. In the 70’s and early 80’s one naira was approximately two dollars . In the early 90’s it had fallen to N10 per dollar and by year 2000 it has was over a hundred naira to one dollar. Currently, the currency exchanges at over 300 to the dollar.

The reason for this isn’t far-fetched - for some reasons Nigeria prefer import to produce, and export; and as the country’s population increases the demand for imported goods increased.

Due to the unbalance of import to exported goods, the demand for dollar is always on the rise, which generally causes a continued depreciation of the naira. Depreciation is steadfast at the parallel market and the gap between naira’s value at the parallel and official market widens easily due to this imbalance. To checkmate this, the CBN has devalued the currency a number of times, only for the same thing to happen years later. This trend has continued since the 90’s and here are 5 reasons why it will continue, until something effective is done.

Poor Infrastructure

The infrastructure on ground doesn’t support the production and manufacture of goods in Nigeria. Bad transportation networks and facilities, inadequate power supply coupled with an unfavourable climate to run businesses make it hard for goods to be produced in Nigeria. As a result Nigerians turn to other countries to get stuff that aren’t easily available in the country. This includes products like rice, toothpick, turkey and other goods that can be produced locally.

Moreover, the demand for goods is ever present and needs to be met. If there isn’t infrastructure to support poultries, toothpick-making factories, rice farms, and so on the need to export these products will always be on the rise. This will cause the naira to continue depreciating against the dollar.

Unwholesome practices of middlemen

There’s a lot of round tripping going on at the Nigerian forex market. People buy dollars at the official market and sell at an inflated price on the parallel market. This has caused the gap between the official market and the parallel market to keep widening, resulting in the weakness of the naira. The CBN has put some measures in place to checkmate this but the results so far haven’t been encouraging.

Persistent negative predictions and projections by Naysayers

Nigeria is known and associated with many bad things globally. Foreign and local media most times have a negative projection about the country’s economy. Things are most of the times, projected to get worse and negative predictions about the naira abound as well. This scares investors and most of them won’t want to put their money into the Nigerian economy when they should, causing a shortage of dollars in the foreign exchange market. Dollar scarcity in turn causes the naira’s value to fall.

“Made Abroad” Mentality of Nigerians

It goes without saying that a lot of Nigerians prefer imported goods to those made locally. We prefer to buy things made in foreign lands, which can easily be produced locally. It’s generally assumed that made-in-Nigeria goods are fake and of substandard quality. Until Nigeria starts producing standard goods and Nigerians have a different mentality, the demand for dollars will always be on the high and the naira will keep depreciating.

General Instability

Nigeria needs to be stable economically, politically and socially for the currency to stabilize. Clashes between rival tribes, political instability and lack of definite economic direction all make the country look unstable to outsiders, disrupting foreign investors and investments.

These 5 issues need a long term solution for the naira to stabilize and stop depreciating against the dollar and other major currencies.

Politics / Oil Installation Vandalism : Prayers Of Christians Protecting Rivers State- Wike by 247frolic(m): 11:44am On Jul 23, 2016
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the state has been protected from the adverse effects of the attacks on the nation’s oil installations because of the prayers of the Christian community.

Speaking during a one day prayer for peace and security in Nigeria organised by the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said that the state is now enjoying relative security because the efforts of the state government were backed up by prayers.

He said: "Two months ago, Rivers State was on the front pages of most newspapers over cult related killings. Today, the state has been able to contain the situation and we are experiencing relative peace.

"But for the prayers of the Christian faithful, where will Nigeria and Rivers State be? We can give all security agencies the logistics that they need, without God there is nothing they can do".

He said Nigeria requires fervent prayers for the developmental and security challenges facing the country to be resolved.
The governor said that once those in authority take actions that will benefit majority of the people, crime and criminality will be drastically reduced.

Wife of the Governor, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike in her prayer for prodigal children, prayed God to touch the hearts of children and youths, so that they follow the path of peace and righteousness.

In his homily on the theme of the prayer rally, "I will heal their land", Catholic Bishop of Port Harcourt, Most Rev. Dr. Camillus Etokudoh said that the country is living in perilous times, hence the need for prayers.

He said God is able to defend the defenceless by divinely intervening at the point of the People's needs.
The Catholic Bishop called for repentance so that God can heal the country and Rivers State. He noted that seeking God's face is necessary in the midst of insecurity and conflict.

The One Day Prayer Rally for peace and security in Nigeria was attended by leaders of different denominations of the Christendom.

Simeon Nwakaudu,
Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.
