Politics / 'ghosts' Gifted $9.8m, £74,000 Found In My House – Ex-nnpc Boss, Yakubu by 247frolic(m): 7:07am On Feb 11, 2017
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday said Andrew Yakubu, former group managing director (GMD) of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), claimed that the sums of $9.8m and £74, 000 found in his house were gifts by 'ghosts'.

Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesman, who disclosed this in a statement, said the money was found in a hidden fire-proof safe.

Uwujaren said the raid of the facility was sequel to an intelligence which the anti-graft agency received “about suspected proceeds of crime believed to be hidden in the slums of Sabon Tasha area of Kaduna”.

Politics / ECOWAS Parliament Prays For President Buhari by 247frolic(m): 3:39am On Feb 11, 2017
The ECOWAS Parliament has joined Nigerians in wishing President Muhammadu Buhari a quick recovery as he receives medical care in a London hospital.

The Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament, Moustapha Cisse Lo, made the remark while delivering his opening speech at 2017 1st Extraordinary Session of the 4thLegislature in Abuja.

He said: “I learnt that President Muhammadu Buhari is currently in London, Great Britain for health reasons, I wish him, on your behalf, a quick recovery.”

The speaker expressed concern over Nigeria’s dwindling economy occasioned by fall in the price of oil and the continuing attacks on its oil installations, this, he said, had resulted in revenue loss for the government, high inflation and shortage of foreign currencies.

“The decrease in petroleum revenue lays bare the real fragility of the budget,” he added.

Politics / PHOTOS: Gov Ajimobi Leads Campaign, As Oyo Begins Environmetal Laws Enforcement” by 247frolic(m): 1:11pm On Feb 02, 2017
Oyo State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, on Wednesday, led top officials of the state on a roadshow across the state to sensitise the people on the preparedness of the state to begin the enforcement of environmental sanitation laws.

At each stop, the governor said he decided to lead the train to underscore the importance attached to the environmental sanitation and urban renewal flagship programmes of the administration.

The campaign, which took the governor and his team to markets in Bere, Oja Oba, Bode, Molete and Challenge, is expected to continue on Thursday (today) in other areas of the state.

Addressing the traders and residents, the governor warned them to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, refuse burning and other violations of the state’s new sanitation laws, which he said would be fully enforced beginning from February 2.

Advising the residents to comply with the law, he said that violators would be brought to justice irrespective of their status.

Ajimobi said, “As we have been doing earlier, we have come again on environmental sanitation sensitization to make our people know that Ibadan should be one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria. We want Ibadan to be aesthetically friendly and environmentally attractive to investors.

“We want people to know that this sensitization has three goals; one is the health goal, a clean environment is conducive to good health; the third one has to do with invitation to investors, when investors know you have a clean environment, they will certainly come.

“As you can see now, we are doing road network with dualization of all entrances into the state and major cities across the state. This form of modernization will make our state the preferred destination for investors.

“What is important to us for now is that all our people must join hands with us and make Oyo State a better place. We want a good state that we can all be proud of and I’m happy that my people are very supportive.”

The governor said that the state could not afford to go back to the era when Ibadan, the state capital, was adjudged as one of the dirtiest cities in the country.

The Oyo State Environmental Laws prescribes imposition of fine and jail terms for indiscriminate dumping of refuse, street trading, building structures on the water ways and under high-tension cables.

Sports / LIST: 5 Nigerian Players Set To Join Mikel In China by 247frolic(m): 2:09pm On Jan 23, 2017
The Chinese Super League has already taken the football fraternity by storm attracting some of the best players in world football and Nigerian players have not been left out.

Recently, Super Eagles skipper Mikel Obi joined his compatriots Obafemi Martins and Anthony Ujah in the CSL. Completesportsnigeria picks out five Nigerian players who could get on the bandwagon this winter transfer window.

ODION IGHALO (Watford)

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo is currently on his longest-ever goal drought in his career with Watford fueling speculations that he could be on his way out of the club as Chinese Super League teams have rekindled interest in a player who has scored just twice this season.

JOHN OWOERI (BK Hacken to Baoding Rogda)

John Owoeri is on the verge of joining Chinese side Baoding Rongda FC for the forthcoming campaign after his Swedish side BK Hacken confirmed that talks were ongoing with the CSL League One side founded three years ago.

The former Atvidabergs and BK Hacken star scored 34 goals in 103 league games in Sweden in four seasons.

ASISAT OSHOALA (Arsenal Ladies)

There have been several unconfirmed reports suggesting the two-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala may join a women's team in China after being offered a lucrative deal.

AARON SAMUEL (Guangzhou R&F)

After a knee injury cut short his career at CSKA Moscow, Nigerian striker Aaron Samuel is set to rejoin his parent club Guangzhou R&F in the Chinese Super League this season. Samuel was on the verge of landing a deal with the former Russian champions but an unfortunate injury in the cup final against Zenit St Petersburg in July last year.

EFE AMBROSE (Celtic)

Efe Ambrose is another Nigerian player attracting interest from China and other teams in Europe. The 28-year-old defender played only two games for his Scottish side this term, both coming in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League. With his current deal expiring this summer, Ambrose will be a happy player departing the club having won four Scottish league titles, one Scottish Cup and one League Cup win.

Crime / PHOTO: Auto Parts Dealer Tells Me Cars To Vandalize - Suspect by 247frolic(m): 8:08pm On Jan 22, 2017
A 33 year old suspect, Olawasegun Oladimeji, arrested by operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command for vandalising Toyota cars in Victoria Island, has confessed that a spare part dealer in Ladipo International Market was the one who gave him the specifications of cars to vandalise.

The suspect, a barber by profession, was arrested in Lekki last week by the RRS officials, barely six weeks after he regained freedom from Kirikiri Prison, Lagos.

The suspect, according to report had just vandalised some vehicles around Lekki before he was apprehended by the RRS's patrol team.

Found in his possession were several body parts of Toyota Corolla and mobile phones, which he stole from the garage guards, who were sleeping when he broke in.

He disclosed that he was released from prison in November, 2016 after he was convicted for three months for removing Toyota body parts in another garage in Apapa, in July, 2016.

According to him, "Oga Dona (auto parts dealer) has my number. He would call to give me the type of vehicle body parts that are on high demand in the market. He would tell me to get them for him.... I have been working for him now for 8 years. I steal different vehicle body parts, particularly, Toyota products.... I remove Toyota Corolla brain box, headlight, rear light, buttons, etc.... Since I came back from prison in November, 2016, I have stolen brain-boxes of 47 cars. My targets are Toyota products.”

He continued, “Whenever I am going on operation, he is the ones that gives me transport money. Most times, he tells me the specifications of the car he wants me to operate on.... I live in Marwa, Victoria Island. I had surveyed the company earlier in the day. And I knew those cars belonged to that company.... At about 4:00 a.m after operation, I had removed all I need to remove. The security sighted me and raised alarm. They were chasing me.... Unfortunately for me, RRS officers were patroling. They sighted me, pursued me with their vehicle and arrested me."

Oladimeji added; “I gained by breaking one of the small side glasses at the back seat. After I might have gotten all those parts, I would call Oga Dona who would tell me where to meet any of his boys for the collection of the parts.... Chidozie Onyema (32) and Ananyor Chukwu (33) were the guys Oga Dona usually send to me to collect those things on his behalf.... At times, I take it to them in Boundary in Ajegunle and most times in Toyota Bus Stop, Oshodi. I sell Toyota Corolla brain box for N30,000; N25,000 or N20,000. The least of the parts is N2,000.”

In his confessional statement, Ananyor Chuwku said, “Our boss, Oga Dona, usually gives me N30, 000 to N35, 000 to give Segun and collect the goods in his hand.... He asked me to wait for him at Toyota bus stop or any other place to collect the stolen car parts from Segun.... At times, he gives me N1, 000 or N500 after the deal. Occasionally, he tells me nothing ‘dey on top’. Segun has been supplying stolen spare parts to him for up to 8 years. We are just hustlers.... Chigozie has another oga that he supplied stolen spare parts to.”

Confirming the incident, the State's Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police, Dolapo Badmus, said that the Command will not rest on its oars in nipping in the bud criminal activities in the state.

The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba for further investigation.

Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole to flag off Emergency Medical and Nutritional Response Program in Borno

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima has received Minister of Health, Prof. Issiac Adewole who arrived Maiduguri on Friday with his team on a 2 day working visit.
The Governor expressed his appreciation to the Minister, his team, and the Federal Government in general for all their efforts as he assured them of the support from the State Government at all times.
"On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, we wish to welcome you. Be rest assured that we will give your team all the necessary support and coorperation towards accomplishing our goals.

"The Permanent Secretary (Mrs. Binta Adamu Bello) was here about 2 weeks ago. As i told you in the inner chamber, when we were discussing the issues, the tragedies, and the challenges confronting us, she became teary. Emotions are not things one can easily hide. She showed a lot of empathy and support of our travails. No matter how tough things are, believe me prof. It won't last forever. No matter how dark the night is, it will give way for the light of the dawn. Believe me, the worse is over.
"3 years ago, Boko Haram was controlling most of the Local Government areas. Now atleast we can sleep with out eyes closed. Boko Haram no longer pose a threat to the corperate existence of this country.
"Yes, we are experiencing suicide bombings once in a while. But these are hiccups we will naturally experience in the dying days of the insurgency, because these demented monsters dwell in the oxygen of publicity. They need to wreck havoc so that they can gain visibility in the community. Unfortunately, these suicide bombers are victims like any one of us. They are small girls intoxicated with heroin, made to wear suicide vests. Anytime they come to detonate those bombs, those girls are not even in their normal senses. And they are made to believe, that anytime they detonate these bombs, they will disappear in thin air and appear in paradise, and all those devilish stories.
We believe that in the coming weeks and months, we shall have enduring peace in the sub region.
"It is not fair to give a conspiracy theory over the sad event. It happens. May their souls Rest In Peace. May God give their families, the people, and the whole nation the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. But we do not want to dwell in the blame game. This gentleman here (Hon. Mamman Nur Sheriff) is the Member Representing that particular constituency. He did not raise any issue on the floor of the National Assembly castigating the armed forces. No, we have collectively decided. We know the sacrifices the armed forces made to have peace in this part of the world.
"It is easy to play to the gallery. Be rest assured that we are with the Federal Government. We are solidly behind the Federal Government. We shall continue with more efforts towards our Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement efforts. We need your support towards equipping our hospitals. We need your support in rebuilding.
"As i told you earlier on, 201 Primary Healthcare Centres and Hospitals were destroyed in the state. There are initiatives of a PHC per ward, transforming Borno in earnest with our people as they return to their homes benefitting health services.
"We are accessing all the accessible funds. We have accessed all the MDG funds. And we don't subscribe to the idea of building small small structures in remote areas. No, we want to really reinforce and strengthen the PHCs, and secondary facilities. As we are talking, we are currently building hospitals in Hawul LG, in Nganzai, we are building a hospital in Baga, in Kukawa, another hospital in Ngamdu, Kaga, and right here in Zajeri in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, and other Local Government Areas". Shettima said.
Earlier in his remarks, Prof. Adewole who also doubles as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Northeast in charge of Health and Nutrition, prayed for repose of the souls of the Rann Tragedy which claimed many lives, and further assured the Governor of their support, as he informed him that they were in the state to flag off the Emergency Medical and Nutrition Programme as part of the Federal Government's intervention in the Northeast.
"We are all aware of the current crises of the North East. Before i move on, let me offer our condolences on the unfortunate incident that occurred which attracted international attention. It is unfortunate and we commiserate with you and your people over the unfortunate incident with loss of lives. We pray that we may never witness such again.
"I think we can also go spiritual. Accidents do happen all over the world. In Afghanistan, in Iraq, even in America with sophisticated equipment and communication systems. Unfortunate incidents. They call it friendly fire fights. That's what the Americans call it. They do occur, but we do not pray for it to ever happen again.
"We also want to appreciate you for the prompt response. And when i got to know, i quickly called the Chief Medical Director of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital to keep all services open and that if you need additional, you should let us know so that we support you. Be it Human Resources or whatever. We thank God that things are stable.
We are with you in this regard, we pray that God will continue to strengthen you.
These difficult times will not last longer. We thank you for hosting us, and our prayers are all that are happening will become history soon".

"As part of the President's commitment to the situation on ground, he directed the Vice President to convey a special meeting, which led to the set up of the NE emergency response team. Which is to really complement the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiative.
We felt that we needed quickly do something as a nation. And that we should not allow this situation to be hijacked and overtaken by external influences.
We were able to show that we can really act. When we act, others will join us. Because this is our terrain. Mr. President approved resources. I've been nominated to chair the response in the health sector.
Because we were actually been planning this, we were quite ready ahead of all the other teams to kick start this effort.
We flagged off all our resources. We moved in supplies, and we advertised locally for people to partake in this emergency response.
We indicate that it will last for six months. As i said earlier on, it is our prayer that this crises will be over by the end of this year. Anybody who is praying for it to last longer is not a lover of this nation.
The Reconstruction and Rehabilitation can last longer. It took the world several years to rebuild Europe. So, to put borno back might take further time.
I am convinced that at the end of this exercise, Borno state will become the beauty in this nation.
Your Excellency, apart from drugs and commodities, we have mobilised and trained 325 health workers that will be deployed in 25 LGs in this State to work. And each team consists of 15 workers including doctors, pharmacists, lab scientists, and other workers.
We will make sure that we no longer lose lives due to preventative causes. And we are also doing this jointly with the ongoing polio effort as well as the measles campaign which has started. We hope that in the next few weeks, we will be able to cover all the children under 10 with polio vaccination.
"We are with you in this situation, and hope to flag this off tomorrow your excellency, and we are willing to formally at your convenience to invite you to grace the occasion, to flag it off today (Saturday)". Prof. Adewole said.

Politics / Stop Building Mosques, Educate Girls – Emir Sanusi Tells Rich Northerners by 247frolic(m): 8:07am On Jan 21, 2017
The Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammad Sanusi II, on Thursday called on wealthy individuals in the North to use the wealth Allah blessed them with, not only in building mosques but to also educate girls and discourage their early marriage.

The Emir made the call on Thursday in his keynote address at the 3rd international conference on Islamic Banking and Finance, organised by the International Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, Bayero University, Kano.

He said, “I’m just tired of people coming to me to say I want to build a new mosque. You know, we keep building mosques and our daughters are illiterates.

“So, my appeal is that if you really want to help Kano, don’t come to me with a request to build a N300m mosque because I have enough mosques everywhere. And if I don’t have a mosque, I’ll build it myself. If you really want to help, go and educate a girl child in the village.”

According to him, over 50 per cent of girls between the age bracket of 18 and 20 were given out in marriage in this part of the country.

Politics / Why More People Die In Nigeria Than Other Countries – Pat Utomi by 247frolic(m): 6:56am On Jan 21, 2017
Respected educationist, Prof Pat Utomi has explained why more people die in Nigeria than any other country of the world.

The erudite educationist said the reason might not be unconnected to the fact that Nigerians like struggling over things that shouldn’t be struggled for.

Utomi who was the Guest Speaker at the 6th Pre-Convocation Lecture of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), in Abuja, disclosed this in‎ his lecture titled, “Political economy of education: “Issues and challenges of opening and distance learning in Nigeria.”

He believed that, “if we were not living in denial, one of the things we would have realised is that our country is in a rolling civil war.‎‎

“We are struggling with Boko Haram, crisis in the north Central and in the South South, we are dealing with all kinds of issues like militancy and so forth.

“More people die in Nigeria, a violent death than many of the countries in war.‎ What we have in Nigeria is an evergreen civil war.

“How are we going to make progress when there’s so much violence everywhere?

“We have a zero-sub mindset. People are struggling over things that they shouldn’t be struggling over.”

Crime / Ugandan Police Foil The Wedding Of A Pregnant 14-Year-Old Bride by 247frolic(m): 6:41am On Jan 03, 2017
Police in in Uganda recently stopped a wedding involving a supposed 15-year-old girl. According to local media reports, the officers stormed a wedding ceremony and foiled the marriage of the teen to a 22-year-old man.

The girl who's a secondary school dropout, is currently four months pregnant. Her parents Abdu Kalimu Ngobi (pictured left) and Faridah Kagoya are said to have agreed to marry off their daughter to the man, Talyaka Swaliki (pictured right) after getting Shs 200, 000 and a goat as bride price. Eyewitnesses claim that the Police arrived after the traditional wedding ceremony was over. The groom was expected to take the bride home but police stormed the place just as they were about to leave. Relatives and guests reportedly scampered for safety to avoid being arrested.

Interestingly, the bride denied she was underage and claimed to be 18-year-old. She also accused police at the station for disrupting her wedding, saying; “I am not young and I don’t know why police disrupted our function. I love my husband and. I asked my parents’ permission to get married.”

The girl’s parents also insisted that the daughter was 18 years and had accepted to marry her off at her own request. “She dropped out of school and told us that she wanted to get married to the man who was responsible for her pregnancy and as a Muslim, I had no objection,” her father, Mr Ngobi said.

The groom also said he had been in relationship with the supposed underage girl for two years.

“Her parents asked for a bride price of Shs 200,000, a goat and two gomesi which I paid. They didn’t tell me that she was young,” said the groom.

Although a group of residents later stormed the Police Station demanding for the suspects to be released, the Police have confirmed that the parents are to be charged with marrying off an underage girl while the groom is to be charged with defilement.
