Alot of Nigerians are stupid!

An Ashawo got into a fight with another Ashawo, Ashawo #1 called out ashawo #2 on the streets of Obalende, accusing her of sleeping with all the landlords in the street. Children of Ashawo #2 attacked Ashawo#1 calling her "Otu" military barracks which most likely is true.

However, the truth is both Ashawo na Ashawo and calling out each other doesnt change the fact!

If the Nigerian Government had tackled the issue of Boko Haram without politicizing it and pointing fingers at everyone else but herself, Boko Haram wouldnt be the monster it is today...

How ridiculous we are still sticking our head in the sand while the monster grows..
PoliticsPresident Goodluck Jonathan, A President Living In Denial ~ 27naira by 27naira(op): 9:32am On Jan 11, 2015
I am from the South East, I grew up in a society that is apolitical, and i never knew the name of my Local Govt Chairman.
Things changed the moment the financial crisis of the 2008 set in, i lost my first job and became "aware" of the effects fiscal and political decisions can have on all of us.

Fast forward to present, i have watched with keen interest the political gimmicks put up by the current administration at Federal level, feeding off of the hopes of every Nigerian for a brighter tomorrow. words like "set to" and "plan to" has become a common phrase that has begin to irritate many Nigerians as myself. To cap the assault on the common sense of every Nigerian, the FG continues to dish out statistics about Job creation and positive performance of the Economy, you can't help but wonder why the "growth" is not trickling down.

I have a grudge towards the Federal Government, for allowing a non elected, non political figurehead, Mrs Patience Jonathan to influence the political sphere especially in the South-South. She has amassed so much influence that one wonders how a Government guided by a constitution has allowed so much and even shaded so much unconstitutional parallel government. The wife of a president is NOT AN ELECTED officer and should not operate unless in the capacity of a charity administrator or Non-governmental agent figurehead. NOT a King maker.

Goodluck Azikiwe Ebele Jonathan, has shown ineptitude and lack either ideas or interest in tackling the insurgency happening in Northern Nigeria. In 2014, it was published in the dailies that "NAF set to take delivery of Mi-24D attack helicopters in Aug 2014", These dailies that were quick to sing the "set to" part never published a single line about this issue anymore. Most likely it was a farce or it got "botched" half way or the delivery happened but we will use them for the 3rd world war. My point is, Goodluck does not care!. He has not addressed the Nation on issues regarding the insurgency, Not on my TV. He has stopped showing remorse for the attacks but will rather condemn terror attacks in Paris or wherever.
Thousands are dying but our National Flag never flew at half mast. Bombs goes off like new year's fireworks and not a word is said by the present Government. 10s and 10s of thousands keep dying but no blueprint has been presented to tackle terror. How do we live through this? How? The Doyin Okupe guy was quick to come to twitter to challenge the figures on the casualties of deadly attach in Baga that happened 2 days ago, claiming that we are in a political period and some of these things are expected. Even if it is 1 person that died, those that make it any better? How does this man sleep at night? by the way, it is estimated that the dead toll might be up to 2000!

Children are kidnapped and coerced to become suicide bombers. the 200 Chibok girls have gradually faded from our memories which is exactly the game plan of the Federal Government. For every one girl child kidnapped and strapped with an explosive, Goodluck Jonathan who is the chief security officer, his team and supporters are responsible for her tears and blood. Why have we not taken the war to the enemy in Sambisa forest, why have we not equipped our military to fight this war, why do we blame France, Chad, USA, Israel, why do we blame Buhari for our incompetence? but we lavish millions and millions of USD on frivolities and useless security vaults to our useless law makers?

The truth is that if we allow this status quo to remain, We may have running trains from Lagos to Kano but no passengers to fill the seats.

God bless Federal Republic of Nigeria!
We are one country with one destiny, a country united by the blood of our fallen heros, by the tears and blood of Chibok and Baga, by the soiled and contaminated farm lands that span the Niger delta, by the Amajiris that plead for your kobo and pray for the next meal, by our common police that is quick to harass and assault, by our greedy and Godless politicians who are willing to sacrifice you and me to retain their political office, oh Yes! we share the same destiny no matter our differences.

MY HAND DON DEY PAIN ME JARE I WAN SLEEP....WATCHOUT FOR PART TWO.
Whoever interviewed you was out of ideas.
Red has never been and will never be an offensive color for a tie. That opinion is subjective.
I will assume you are a fresh graduate with little or no experience, that may likely be the reason why the interviewer had no productive subject matter to discuss.
By the way, in the States, democratic congressmen prefer red tie smiley

I have been to a couple of interviews where expat candidates showed up on jeans and t-shirts, and was only present NOT for the interview par se but to negotiate their wages. lol

Silicon valley tech firms don't give a hoot if you show up shorts and flip flops as far as you have what they need.

Things you need to know when going for an interview:

1. have a grasp of the corporate policies of the company you're gunning for. If it is a financial firm, go corporate, preferably not a shiny tie like pink or yellow! cheesy and also, get a hair cut and a manicure. Those frauds are particular about appearance.

2. For oil and gas, those assholes are bossy and snobbish. Be patient. Most likely, they will not ask you anything out of the ordinary if you are a fresh recruit, we most likely will ask you about your degrees and academic related questions. A question that i found candidates have not answered appropriately is "what do you want to be"? its vague and tricky right? the truth is that your approach to the question will show us your line of thought! For experienced hands, we are only interested in your career history and why you left your last employers. Some O/G people are professional ashawo, jumping from one company to the other without loyalty to anyone smiley. Nobody wants to mobilize you handsomely today and you will quit the next day. mbanu!
CareerRe: Geophysicists, Geologists, & Petroleum Engineers: Professionals & Aspirants by 27naira(m): 8:05am On Sep 30, 2014
Hello Guys, am a ToolPusher and am gonna give a handful of advises to prospective O/G workers.

I have taken some time to peruse this particular topic and have come to the realization that most people here are motivated by "salary".
certain questions here are outrageous. I bet you, if a recruiter walks in here, he or she will be interested in only a very few number of people, you know why? because there is an overwhelming show of lack of focus and inability to research (problem solving skills). Questions like "how does a chemical engineer fit into an oilfield career?" shows little or no knowledge of the dynamics of the industry. So, why do you want to join??

To the main topic, The upstream O/G can be grouped into 3 segments. you have the Operators (likes of Shell, Exxon, Addax etc). You have the drilling contractors like Transocean, Shelf drilling, Nabors drilling etc. You also have the Oil servicing companies like Schlumberger, Baker Hughes etc.
The Drilling contractors man and operate the drilling equipment. This industry is primarily hungry for Experienced hands. Green hands or fresh recruits are few at any given time. Degree may not be a major factor and also note that certification does not in most cases grant you an edge, Unless you are on an accelerated course such as Assistant Driller programs or Trainee Rig Supervisor programs offered by some companies. To get in, you need to be at the right place at the right time! find the recruitment consultants and HR firms that employ for the O/G. You will be surprised that a recruiter for a rig operating somewhere in Niger delta is based in the UK and is listing the vacancies on LinkedIn and not on Nigerian Dailies.

For the Operators like Shell and Exxon etc, you neeeeeedddddd a good degree. By a good degree, i mean an Engineering degree! The argument exists that other type of graduate works in the O/G, agreed! but statistically speaking, Engineering degree is a preferred option. This is similar to banking, a customer service rep will never make a branch manager but a marketer will. You get my point?.. Now the world has become freaking competitive, Bsc and Beng is no longer considered a big deal, so, go get a masters degree and hit a 1st class if you can! yes, a 1st class is better than all the certifications you'll ever get to supplement your degree. You don't need to go learn Promax or WellPath or Eclipse, your employer will take care of that! Just get a first class!. Another thing, prove that you're research oriented. Publish papers, go to conferences and network!! If you have a couple of publication up your sleeves (conference papers or journals), you're in! trust me. Anybody can publish a paper, whether you're in school or a graduate, employed or not.. be productive! identify with SPE, attend conferences and present technical correspondences.

For Service companies, you need to have a brain! a productive one!. These people are the donkey of the industry. They do the Job! A good degree, being first or top 5 percentile in your class is a profile booster. If you have publications to your name, thats an added advantage. They don't care about certifications, They will train you, in fact, they provide the best trainings in the industry. Save your money.

So you see, your academic performance is a deciding factor how easy things get when you're out of school. For the students, take your studies seriously.

Pray alot.

CultureChaos: A Nigerian Thing? ( My Experience At The Venue Of Nigerian - Iraq Match) by 27naira(op): 7:16am On Oct 26, 2013
It was already 4:25 pm, i said to myself "this is it"! I turned off the telly and flipped my computer close. I quickly slid into my white shorts and a blue t-shirt and headed for the door. The game starts by 5pm - "how do i beat the sheikh Zayed traffic"? i asked myself. Quickly i searched for "al rashid stadium" on the GPS navigator and hit the road making sure i was keeping to speed limit but not falling behind.
Heading towards al sharjah, i followed the voice prompt and alas! look at the stadium! The time was already 4:50 pm, i hurriedly parked off road in the sands, making sure there is no parking meter within the vicinity because i wasn't ready to part with anything, even a fil.

Around me, i saw two coaster buses with the Nigerian flag conspicuously mounted or rather wrapped around the front. All i see is my Naija brothers coming out from every direction: Some, so dressed up you'll think its a wedding occasion while others were flipping and flopping on their bathrooom slippers, immediately i felt like i was in Nigeria, i was grinning from ear to ear, i loved the feeling!

I headed to the entrance, grabbed my free ticket from the security post and navigated myself through the crowd towards CAT2 Zone 7 which i will say was the "Nigerian Domain".
On getting to entrance 7, i couldn't believe it! It was like Enyimba stadium! people pushing and shoving at themselves to get to the gate, i was dumbfounded. There was chaos! a typical Nigerian chaos that makes you quickly forget your manners. The barricade was aligned for a single queue but we have over 3 to 4 queues all pointing to the same little entrance. People were shouting, screaming and laughing. Calling out friends names and reserving slots for their pals.
The Police couldn't even handle it. I asked myself "Did God take away orderliness from Nigerians as a punishment to Eve for eating the apple"? It will be most unfair because Eve isn't a Nigerian. Suddenly, they started climbing stuffs. Anything that is elevated became a stepping spot. Every other nationality was let in but the gate to the "Nigerian domain" was still shut due to the chaos. To my amusement people started screaming "its not fair o". It was funny in the most shameful way.

To save you from my ranting, we were finally let in after some folks were subjected to thorough frisking "with their hands raised" lol.

Since then, i've wondered and concluded that the Nigerian psych has been riddled by the disease of chaos. orderliness has been lost in our society such that we can't even tolerate it. We have programmed ourselves to "standout" from the larger society by showing lack of comportment. It is easy to complain about every other people hating Nigerians but the absolute truth is we don't make ourselves likable either.

It was not necessarily a well control issue. Just that the actual cement job was done with slurry volume less than what was actually stated in the cement program. I think the cement that was used for the program was elastocem or something like that, am not sure.

Shouldn't your final year thesis be more technical that just a correspondence? I do not think that project topic can stand the test of time, given that recruiters now evaluate your technical capabilities and publications.
Great thread!!!

Thanks to Dr Ferlie, Okeyz, Devmantic, 27naira and all other posters who have kept this going by your wonderful contributions. I somewhat feel this thread was created for mesmiley.

I have a BSc in Computer Science (2,1) from a Nigerian University, did my NYSC with a major Oil multinational and have been on contract term employment since after service till date. I graduated at age 24, have several IT certifications relevant to my job and bagged an MBA from another Nigerian University in 2007. I presently head my unit of IT in the Oil and Gas multinational, a role previously reserved for expatriates.

In 2010, I discovered my presnet job was showing some signs of blurred career path as so many top shots were leaving to other functions or resigning outrightly from the company and I made up my mind to leave as well. I applied and was offered admission to study MSc Offshore Technology with Subsea Engineering at Cranfield Univeristy, UK. When I mentioned to my then American boss, I was advised not to go as there was no correlation between my present job and the course. I did everything to convince her that I intended switching career but all to no avail. With that kind of stance from a highly respected boss and mentor, coupled with the fact that I had junior ones that needed to be seen through their university education, I declined the offer.

It's been three years since I declined that offer now and nothing has changed on my job -more and more people are still moving to other functions or resigning (although freshers are coming in too), status still remains contract although pay is still relatively good and all my sibblings have now graduated from school which gives me room to take some risks. Besides, I now find the job extremely boring and I survive daily by delegating most of it to my subordinates now, attending only to very critical issues.

I have re-applied for the same course (MSc Offshore Technology with Subsea Engineering) at the same university as I understand it's one of the best for the course in the UK (core Oil & Gas production within the offshore environment is where my passion is now) and have just been re-offered the admission, after being made to go through the entire admission process all over again. The programme is billed to commence in Oct 2014.

It appears my mind is fully made up this time. But considering my present age (41) and my wholly IT background till date as pointed out by my former boss then (even though in an Oil & Gas producing firm), does anyone have any advice for me regarding this move?

Looking forward to your great responses as usualsmiley.
Big brother, i think you have a well grounded career history in IT, i will ask you the same question as your Boss... why the switch?

Msc doesn't come with an automatic job ticket, besides am doubtful that your IT experience will count for you when trying to switch to Subsea Engineering.. Alot of firms prefer ready-made if you know what i mean. Please think it through

kika41: @27naira,1nce again am grateful...m so another thing I'll like to know is dat:does petroleum engineering requires a greater idea of mathematics or physics...and plz is the course a creative and does it require good thinking? Or its just about cramming facts...?
If you must be a good engineer, you'll have to discard the idea of cramming facts and must understand the fundamentals of engineering principles that make up the building blocks of petroleum engineering. YES! physics is very important for Petroleum Engineers especially conservation of mass and energy. For you to be a good reservoir engineer, you must be a good mathematician. So take your sciences seriously!

Ujawissy: @27naira I'm very grateful for ur reply,i must say i have a strong passion for the o and g field. do u think going for master in either subsea or offshore engineering will give me an edge?
Offshore engineering and subsea engineering are awesome disciplines. However, to gain an edge you must make good grades! that's what gives you the much needed leverage in the job market.

leorayvon: Hi house am a graduaute of physics , with a 2:2 pls I will like to knw how I can further my career in the oil n gas sector

kika41: @27naira,am very grateful 4 d advice and does a 1st class degree guarantee a good job and salary
A first class puts you on top of the cadre as a preferred candidate for employment by top recruiters. It also affords you the opportunity to go for your Phd with possibility of grants and scholarships. So you should target to make first class. smiley

Ujawissy: i'm a civil engineering undergraduate, pls do u think i can fix in into oil and gas industry? and how can i go about it after my degree
First of all, what is your passion? what do you want to do? are you simply motivated by prospects of good salary? why do you want to join the oil and gas sector? i'll advise you to search your heart and come up with what you really want for yourself. Money is the worst career driver and does not guarantee job satisfaction. I've seen people quit the oil and gas (despite the money) in search of a more fulfilling career.
There are departments in the oil and gas industry that recruit civil engineers, however, i don't know the scope of their involvement in the field other than supervision.

I may come off a little harsh but this particular thread has lost its primary objective.

It all started with the moderators merging subsea, mud, reservoir, petroleum, drilling engineering etc together. There are clear and distinct differences in these disciplines and merging them together creates a bogus thread.

I was also of the opinion that this thread was intended by Dr Felie to discuss events, experiences and challenge in the field of drilling engineering, but it has become a thread for posting college questions, more questions and many more questions. This is not totally wrong in itself but in the presentation. It is not my intention to be hard on young school leavers and people with the intention to join the oil and gas industries but coming here to ask about courses and certifications that will boost your employability isn't the purpose this thread was created for. All you need to get into the system is a good college degree and a heavy dose of persistence and resilience. Certifications (no matter the cost) will not supersede experience. You've got to count 1 before 2 isn't it? So get off NL, get on to LinkedIn, do a diligent search on the opportunities available in the industry, get to connect with the people that matter and then sale yourself!

I will like us to get back to the purpose why this thread was created. Lets talk about our different experiences in the industry, lets talk about the recent technologies, lets talk about incidences and why they happened. This way everybody will learn and appreciate this thread once more.

Recently, we had an incident in my rig after running and cementing the 13-3/8 Casing and subsequent drilling with 12-1/4 bit. Prior to this, before cementing the 13-3/8, we had run out of cement onboard our jack up and had to wait on boat for about 48 hrs to get cement.. At the end of the day, we ended up cementing less that the calculated volume but we did not consider this critical. Now, will drilling the 12-1/4 hole, (mind you, this is a HPHT well), we noticed that the rubber seal connecting the bell nipple to the flow line was compressed upwardly and has started to leak Oil based mud. The situation was alittle scary but very frustrating because we were drilling through reactive shale and cant stop drilling! To make matters worse, someone observed that the base plate of the Casing head housing for the 13-3/8 casing has moved up by about 3 inches off the 36 inch conductor pipe and we were talking formation water through the annulus!

After much consultation with the office folks, we stopped drilling but continued circulation will reciprocating the drill string. (reciprocating means moving the string up and down smiley), to mitigate the leak from the damaged seal, we circulated through the choke line and maintained the mud level below bell nipple (Smart!), (To ensure that we don't wear the choke manifold, we had to first of all circulate our shakers cleans of cuttings).

To cut the long story short, It was later concluded that the 13-3/8 casing moved up due to thermal expansion, pushing the BOP and bell nipple and squeezing that damaging the rubber seal on top of the bell nipple. This might be related to the fact that "insufficient" cement job was done initially.
To correct this, a top cement job was done by injecting cement between the annulus of the 13-3/8 and conductor pipe casings.

Lessons learned: Never ever, keep your eyes off the wellhead. Good housing keep is very necessary to identify leaks which might be critical. Never compromise on cement jobs. HPHT wells can cause thermal expansion of tubulars... you shouldnt get scared.

First of all, I don't agree with the MODS for lumping Reservoir, Pipeline, Petroleum and Drilling engineers together. Though they're all under oil & gas, It doesn't make sense having people discussing simulations, EOS, grid building and all those sort of stuffs which are reservoir engrg terminologies on the same page as people talking about stuck-pipe, gas pockets, rotary steerable, Eco-scope MWD which are strictly for drilling engrs.

Secondly, this page has lost its purpose. It is now more of a job-seeker page than a professional forum to discuss drilling related matter. This seems harsh but that's what it is.

Can we revert this page to what it was meant for? I bet even the students will learn alot if we discuss Drilling related issues... not just internship, job openings and people looking for project topics.
