I have a couple of friends who are trying the 'marry for green card' avenue ,and, not only is it expensive it is also risky -the woman might just chop the money and not show up for the interview with immigration.

And the issue with the H1B/L1B visa on the other hand is due to the Indians who have dominated that visa route in recent years. I think Trump is just trying to reduce the number of visas going to those indians. If you study for a STEM degree in the US then you might have a reasonable chance of getting a H1B non-immigrate visa -which can lead to a green card.

Yes, that's for real, thanks for the write up.
I personally asked my GF in Nigeria to move on when i moved to the US on F1 student visa for my MBA., am maintaining my status and never stopped my program.

Initially, i thought i could sustain the distant relationship, but after like 4months, I just have to get real with her. It was painful for us both, but it was a great relief on me afterwards.

OP what of people who have US citizens as family members.

Whats the process of sponsorship like? My friend's boyfriend who went to the US sometime in 2015 to school there allegedly already has a green card. Is it that easy?

Ah yes.
Having a US citizen as a sibling or step-sibling makes you eligible for a green card.

Having DIRECT (sibling, parent, spouse, child) family links in general in the US makes you eligible to apply for a green.

Many Naija girls are ready to wait for as long as possible as long as the guy dey wire her money.

Some guys are also very lucky in U.S where they get there as a visitor and marry under one year...once this is Done, they get a resident permit where they can go in and out of the country and permanent resident after two years with their wife in U S whether real or arranged.

Ladies and Gentlemen in Naija, I'll be 100 with you...

If you are dating someone and they are trying to migrate to USA with a non-immigrant visa, and they say they are coming back for you....chances are you are better off just freeing them and remaining friends while you face your life where you are.
I bet you neither you nor them knows the challenges that will have to be faced along this road.

Not every US Visa is a migration Visa. There is schooling visa, visiting visa, etc.
And visas are very restrictive about what you can and cannot do, and if you can even be allowed to apply for any other visa.

When a person has at least a green card, that is US permanent residency, and they are on a home run to US citizenship.
A green card means a person has no serious limitation within the US besides voting (you can do that when you become a citizen).
It is also at this GreenCard level that your trans-atlantic lover can BEGIN the process of sending for you.

But the road to a green card is long and uneasy if you didn't win a US diversity lottery..
Seeing as Nigeria is one of the countries banned from the Us Visa lottery (a program whereby people gamble to win a US greencard), no Nigerian as at some years back can get a quick GreenCard through that route. They have to go the looooong route.

There are various do-able long paths to the US greencard e.g:
- Naija -> School in US -> OPT -> H1B -> Eb2/Eb3/Eb4 employment based GreenCard
- Naija -> School in US (PHD) -> Lots of exploits -> extra-ordinary person Eb1 GreenCard
- Naija -> Have $500k - $1M to "invest" in the US -> Eb5 Investor Greencard. The higher you spend the more the priority (tief tief agbada types love this one)
- Naija -> marry a US citizen or Greencard holder -> Marriage based Greencard.

each '->' sign can mean any where from 2-10 years!

But all these things have been made longer and even sometimes down right unattainable by Trump.
Now, companies that had once hired people through the H1B won't even look at you unless you have an OPT, which means you have more time to "try to get" an H1B.....which you might still kuku not get. undecided
Also, you need to basically be Elon Musk or Bill Gates before you can come in through the "Extra-ordinary person" route.
If you thought you had money before, Trump wants to raise the $$$ range for investing, so the #BigAgbada will probably have to tief more. grin

The insults are so bad right now that in the US, Trump is trying to fight their 13th amendment so as to prevent people who visit the US to give birth from having that child become an automatic US citizen.

Now if the UK was your target, it's even worse because Theresa May and her people are mimicking Trump's US anti-immigration agenda to the point of them going further by trying to deport black UK citizens with Caribbean origins(https://www.npr.org/2018/05/02/607652305/caribbean-immigrants-to-u-k-threatened-with-deportation).

The only thing still left open that these rulers have been unable to touch/complicate yet is Greencard by marriage...and this is where we continue our thread from...

Your boo will mostly have to marry someone there....but it's not that simple.
This process also takes SEVERAL years before they get a greencard, trigger a messy divorce, rebuild themselves, before then being able to START sending for you.
However it is important to keep in mind that:
- Marrying someone purely for a greencard is a scam and is thus a very serious punishable offense worthy of deportation and a ban from the US.
- The safest thing, is to simply marry for real, live in the same house, etc.
- Sensible marriageable people can smell a potential marriage scam from a mile away now and don't enter marriage with guys/girls who don't have papers.
- Since the prime marriage prospects avoid you, You'd probably have to pay someone with a complicated life to do the marriage deal with...and these persons are usually crazy in some way...as they would have to be to collect money to marry someone they don't know.
- There is also the risk of the person you are married to taking advantage, asking for more money midway and/or sometimes even cancelling your greencard application...meaning it was all for naught and you'd then have to go back home anyway in failure after all the suffer.

It's a hard long risky road, one that you in Naija may be totally ignorant of.
In fact sometimes one could deduce that if the same amount of time, hussle and abuse-reception to get a greencard was spent building themselves in Naija, they probably would be farther in life themselves with more human dignity.

All that said...
The easiest thing for your boo to do is to marry a US resident FOR REAL (you don't wanna fake-marry someone you don't see yourself living forever with) and forget you so he/she can move on with their life. After marriage to a good person for a couple years, there will always come that strong urge to just BE DONE with the trans-atlantic wahala and move on with life, forgetting you in the process. Putting out the bad karma of Divorcing, then waiting to recover, and then the beginning of another battle just to send for you...is a serious long ting. You are basically baggage.

There are still some fairly easier, civilized countries to migrate to right now: e.g Australia, Canada (prepare for cold), etc. But if boo's plan is US or UK, and they didn't go as residents, just move your life along.
Don't stunt the development of your life waiting for all that. If you find a functional stable relationship where you are, go with that and free each other to face your chosen destinies untethered and without baggage.

There are many people in Naija who enjoy life to the fullest more than yankee people sef. Focus on being one of those people.

Wow. This is a brilliant piece and I hope many Nigerians who want to travel to US and UK read this over and over again.

But all these things have been made longer and even sometimes down right unattainable by Trump.

I picked this out because many Nigerians love Trump without knowing how hard he has worked to slow African migration down.

Hmmmmm me I fit not do that one Ooooo... U go dey suffer for cold, ur wife dey naija dey jump on dicks with ya sweat..

Oga if I leave naija, we done for good...
One guy I know did just that. He was married with 4 kids when he came to US 15 years ago. He went to club found an akata and married her for green card. He didn't pay so he was living with her as man and wife until they had an altercation and the lady physical abused him. He called the cops and quit the marriage, he had already gotten a conditional green card at that time.
Afterwards, he used a lawyer to show immigration evidence of abuse as the reason he divorced the lady and he got his green card.
He is a citizen today but the wife is still in Nigeria. He wants all the kids to finish university in Nigeria before she comes over. One came over and became useless and spoiled the chances of the other kids and their mum. I don't know if the woman will ever come over.

I also know of a guy also that came over in 2016 and he was already married with 3 kids. He came alone. He lived with one 60 year old woman for 7 months until he found out from lawyer that immigration will not believe he fell in love with the woman. He travelled and slept with different women looking for a woman to marry for free. He later married one older lady and she filed for him.
His wife and kids who already had visas came over and overstayed. She too looked for akata and married and moved in with him. The kids are staying with guy's mum who is also living in US illegally.
I wonder what will happen to this marriage now both of them are living and sleeping with people they married so that they will get green card.
It is sad and pathetic what our people go through to live the American dream.

@OP you are right about paying and the person cancelling your green card. I know of a guy, he paid a citizen of Nigerian descent $10,000. He got his conditional green card. The woman started developing feelings and when he won't budge she called immigration and cancelled his green card. They deported him last year.

It depends on many variables. But let me give you just one example.

2buffagain left Nigeria for US to pursue graduate studies on F1 Visa.
(a) if married before he left Nigeria, he could send documentation to his wife/children to schedule F2 visa interview, and come over without much hassle.
(b)Otherwise, he would need to go home, marry and then bring his wife along etc.
You can't work on F2 visa but can live in US as long as your F1 partner is in status. Your wife can even apply for change of visa status from F2 to F1 without leaving US and also pursue graduate studies.

Let's say, 2buffagain got his PhD or masters and landed an offer in one of these good companies. He will move from F1 to O/H1B and his dependents would be issued O/H4. Dependents can still not work, but have full rights to live in US as long as principal visa holder is in status. 2buffagain and his dependents can then move from O/H1B to green card.

Many serious folks got their PhD within five years, and then green card, two years after graduation.

Bottomline, don't date losers!

Lol and how will he be able to sponsor this family for all these many years when he can't do real work besides small student jobs? There is paper support and there is real support. Real support no be beans when you cannot work.

Gone are the days for all these moves O. There are financial demands when you move here for you talkless of a while family. Dude would have to have some kind of automatic multi-million dollar business in Naija to pull this off... And even at that, they might still not allow in this Trump era.

That said, if you have this kind of business or financial situation in Naija, why even bother with US? You must already be living the dream in naija. Just fly your wife in to give birth in case Trump can't defile the 13th amendment.

Trust me if I had that kind of flow, even me sef would be in naija right now.

There is/are no category(ies) for step-sibling or cousins, uncle, aunts, etc to file for a family member. However, parents can file for their married/unmarried child(ren), brother/sister can file for their immediate sibling for immigrant visa

Well, you are wrong. Let me give you one example.

2buffagain is a student on F1 visa but to bring his wife to US, he needs to show a balance of $6000 in his bank account to secure Form I 20 for partner's F2 visa interview. 2buffagain is obviously on a struggle level as a student but could rally round friends and pull resources together to meet the target. Personally, I know more than 50 people who did it and it's not illegal. It's perfectly legitimate; just networking to survive. This is how foreign students studying in US bring their partners. If you have a child, that includes additional $2000.

Now, a graduate student on a monthly $2000 stipend can live perfectly okay with his partner. And your child(ren) can attend school free of charge up to secondary school level. There is difference between hustling to make it and then saying it's altogether impossible. The only expensive part is buying ticket which folks put on credit card and keep transferring from one card to another to avoid accumulating huge interests until it's paid off. So what do you say?

I say it's a nice strategy!
Learnt something new bro.

Definitely quite involved and relies on a lot of "ifs" tho....like getting a particular graduate job.
Jobs are hard bets everywhere in the world right now.

At the end of the day, this strategy falls under employment green card or "extra-ordinary person" green card.
Both of which I already listed in the opening post and have been made notably harder by Trump.

OP what of people who have US citizens as family members.

Whats the process of sponsorship like? My friend's boyfriend who went to the US sometime in 2015 to school there allegedly already has a green card. Is it that easy?

Yes, that's for real, thanks for the write up.
I personally asked my GF in Nigeria to move on when i moved to the US on F1 student visa for my MBA., am maintaining my status and never stopped my program.

Initially, i thought i could sustain the distant relationship, but after like 4months, I just have to get real with her. It was painful for us both, but it was a great relief on me afterwards.
grin grin zero chill
