thanks to gnome3 for that ish, at times i wonder is gnome realise this UI (huge onscreen keyboard, radio buttons, things like airplane mode etc) is so blatantly aimed at tablets. funny thing is nobody is slapping it on a tablet. or has anyone seen a tablet with gnome shell?

@lynxnoon and @all. i am pleased to inform you that the wifi tether function is back working grin

i tried it yesterday,, and thats what iv been using with my fone at work, even right now.
create a wireless network. preferably WPA or even free. connect it, connect ur modem (im using starcomms evdo)

search for the connection with your fone, it should connect and surf. mine does anyway.

subsequent times, if u wanna connect t again, u most likely wont see it in the drop down menu for network manager so click on the create wireless network again, but when it brings u the box, click on the drop down thingy where it says new, u will see your previously created network there, select it, and connect.

thats one less lynxnoon complaint grin grin grin grin

Chamakh be afraid. . . .be very afraid. grin
another win. yes another win, thank God for little mercies o. hmmmnn

as for chamakh, i am surprised u think he should be afraid. he should pack his bags already. from the little i saw, this park guy is so much the arsene type of striker, chamakh truth be told is an aberration. i have never seen an attacker for arsenal with his type of gameplay. and he seems not to be able to get his head out of the ground.

reminds me of last season when the chap was complaining about fatigue after 3 months. this season he has been fully rested, yet. . . . . . . . . . . . . grin grin grin grin grin
im one of his supporters, but if this park guy can deliver the goods, ol boy too bad.

its just really annoying when i remember how much furore getting him caused. this yeye frenchman declined signing a striker when seriously needed simply cos chamakh was coming at close season for free, all the insults and abuse for his former club etc etc. mcheew!

Business › Re: Fuel Subsidy And Fake Subsidy - Simon Kolawole by 4llerbuntu(m): 6:01pm On Oct 25, 2011
but why is it that the sole solution is to remove the subsidy?

what about stopping the fraud and catching the perpetrators? sacred cows?

hmmn, anyway there is a question that i have always wanted to ask:

if per chance i build a refinery, will i buy crude oil at the same international price that every foriegn nation buys it from nigeria?

if that is affirmative, does that not mean that in the long run, the prices i will sell my refined oil will be close to the price it is sold abroad?

and ultimately therefore, it does not matter if i refine it here, or in swahili land, the price difference from locally refined and imported may turn out to be a few naira.

which will inturn mean that we have oil yet do not enjoy any real benefit from being oil producers.
talk about a curse.

THE SOLUTION IS NOT REMOVING THE SUBSIDY, ITS REMOVING THE FRAUD, ITS REMOVING THE SURROUNDING FACTORS THAT MAKE THE FRAUD A VIABLE CONCERN.
ITS ABOUT THE REALITIES ON GROUND, NOT PAPER SOLUTIONS TO EVERYDAY REALITIES.

MARK MY WORDS, A FEW MONTHS AFTER SUBSIDY REMOVAL, THE SAME GOVT WILL PROPOSE RETURNING IT.

Tom Cleverly.

the bestest midfielder in absentia. i have never seen anyone so highly rated in absentia.  to think that he played less than ten games before getting injured sef makes it even more astonishing.
if he comes back and this mythical ando/cleverly partnership does not produce the fantasy footy we have been made to believe it does, are we going to get excuses in the line of he is just coming back, or somebody here will simply raise up his hand and admit that he is a dumbass nucca?

is UTD a one man team? or simply a one man midfield team? cos i really do not get how and why TC's absence is the cause of so much craptastic footy. FFS he is new to the team sef

then again, @ coogar, pls where and what has happened to the champagne footy that is going to beat barca?  grin grin grin grin grin grin

presto he starts giving us a free lecture on how much he know.

U gave up mandriva? my issue with these distros is having to learn radically different ethos. like i discovered this afternoon that i could not open a root dolphin folder with kdesu. as in i was looking at the thing like really? i googled and saw some really arcane instructions and some stuff about that not being possible on particular kernels bla bla bla.

Computers › Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 6:24pm On Oct 19, 2011
in the first place i do not speak of what i dont have first hand experience over about linux.
so i find this your post very weird, and slightly belittling

all4naija:
I totally disagree with you regarding gnome 3, Ubuntu 11.10 being gnome 3.x.x by default is running as unity. All Linux are some ways incomplete. Featureless, that's not actually true and it has all the features you find in unity and even extra.
like what and what? do u even realise the gnome-shell desktop in ubuntu repos has already been modified? stock gnome-shell does not even have right click menu options

upon loading a gnome shell desktop what do u have? blue wallpaper and a top bar.
when u open apps, u do not have the option to minimise, it takes a double take to find out how to move between many open pages. it is not intuitive at all.

GNOME 3 and GNOME SHELL are not the same thing. just to be sure we are on the same page. i was talking about gnome shell to lynxnoon who im pretty damn sure know the difference between the two.

and FYI, GNOME SHELL lacks more features compared with unity. anyone who has used ubuntu for a while will instantly tell u that. and im pretty damn well sure i have done that for longer than u have

whether u like unity or not is another thing entirely

all4naija:
Simple in what sense? Third party repositories are needed sometimes if your Synaptic Manager is not having such updates(Unity is the father of adds- to- repositories -so, let's not go there) and it's an avenue to make more educational quest rather than simple in that sense. Changing of wallpapers and common indicators requiring repositories is one of the few misinformation about Ubuntu 11.10 I have ever come across or heard about. Anyway, there are nothing like those you just made mentioned of in the latest gnome 3.x.x releases.
i take this to mean u dont know what u are talking about.
i was not referring to applications for extended functionality, i am talking about normal core functions

how do u change the wallpaper (ubuntu already modded this anyway if u have another desktop installed), add a new shell theme, get your applications like pidgin to have and work with indicators when running gnome-shell?

what can u do with gnome-shell without gnome tweak which is available in the webupd8 ppa? or does your pidgin work with indicators in GNOME SHELL?

all4naija:
I therefore challenge you to try it, a trial will convince you. In my own case unity has never in any way impressed me to the very extent I have been fairly convinced of this gnome 3.x.x. It is a great improvement from the previous gnome 3 though.

Having said that, you need to move with what's new and let the old way be what it is. You need to learn the new improvement in the gnome or the latest releases in the unity. Oh! You use Ubuntu. What version would that be?
and this part i find purely amusing. i distinctly remember when u joined this community as a total green horn and now u are asking me to move with the times and which version im running? as in really? 5.04 embarassed embarassed embarassed

by the way, gnome 3 is actually the source of all the tablet centric UI farts in 11.10 its just as eyesore.

i do not engage in desktop wars, its silly. it still the same ubuntu so what is the point? whatever desktop u run is your choice and taste.

I WAS TALKING ABOUT GNOME SHELL AND NOT GNOME 3, there is a difference cos i see u keep saying gnome 3.xx

if u dont know this clearly, this convo is a nonstarter then.

just dropped n ran 11.10 yesterday . . .yet to try out the gnome3, i hope its cool as u guys say cos right now i aint feeling this unity at all sad
dont think u will like gnome 3 either. its still too incomplete and featureless. it looks even far more simple and from what i gather u will have go add a loy of 3rd party repos to get things working even common indicators or changing wallpaper!

for unity, i just dont like the constant subtle changes, dash button moved to the unity bar instead of top bar, apps default into opening in "the background. well they make sense but im used to the old way so the change is confusing. its more stable than i thought it would be, even the pc i upgraded works fine. im sure it will be a hit on a tablet with a few more tweaks. u should try running it on a 40 inch screen. . .

hmmn there is life in this thread again.

@weaver, does ur windows guest see the modem when u enable usb? such that u can dial up in the vm and not network manager?
that never used to work for me o. my huawei modem works with network manager, but in a vm, it gets captured by the usb but does not work properly, the dashboard wont even detect a signal etc.

thot i was the only one wondering how ubuntu has gone thoroughly tablet ui crazy. radio buttons everywhere. explains why synaptic isnt default. a few more tweaks like not apps that cache in memory without closing and anor way of closing apps and we have a full blown tablet os.

worthy of note also is that JRE is no longer in the repos, so u either install openjdk or u manually install jre binary.

i upgraded my desktop at home. funny thing is it was fine, only issue is gnome-shell wont start. but im sure thats video card related though it runs unity 3d well.

going to put KDE on my office box dual boot and see how long it takes to aggravate me. its not bad, could be better. wish they would stop moving things so much, like the dash button. i was used to it being in the corner, now its part of the bar. the top bar is seemingly useless without a open application which of course is still global menu. confusion.

then again apps open in the background, new behavior. i would open a app, then wonder why it didnt open to the fore as per former behavior, only to find it running if i minimise the current app. takes some getting used to, hope after 6months it wont be changed again.

ubuntu sole boot with Wine and microxp in a VM running in seamless mode is the ulimate setup right now. thats my rig setup, and its great.

Career › Re: Lawyers' Bench: Court Matters & Ors by 4llerbuntu(m): 9:29am On Oct 17, 2011
hehehehehe, too many experiences to recall, but one floats to the top easily.

there was this matter i had, defendant was indebted and refused to file a defence, nor even brief a lawyer. after the judge made me jump throughso many hoops i finally got a date for hearing of my motion for judgment. as usual the defendant had always had a spy in court so he was aware of the date.

on that date i was primed and ready, only for me to hear one scruffy looking female lawyer stand and announce appearance for the defendant. now i had seen her earlier and she even requested to sit beside me only to change her mind. ( i was to discover why later) . i did not know she was for the defendant at the time.

when i decided to go forward with the matter for the day, to my utmost shock this lawyer stood up and started shaking incontrollably. she then informed the judge in the same shaking mode and voice that she was just briefed but she was ill and asked for an adjournment. this is a matter that had been on for over a year.

i was literally stunned, my jaw dropped open!! i was stuttering, this was someone who was beside me and nothing was wrong with her. i pulled myself together and tried to inform the court but u can trust female collabo naw, the female judge granted an adjournment presto and even reprimanded me for being insensitive. the oversmart lawyer miraculously recovered immediately and smiled out of court.

it was a new and strange tactic to me, u could imagine my shock. what was worse was that i didnt know how to explain the event to my colleagues and the client with all my years, i felt belittled
