as a matter of fact, i can see that the usb network is not listed in that last cmd, i did that whilst connected

umm, why is not registered as a network connection even while it is connected?

takes two to banter, but then mums the word. thanks bigrovar, sheesh it just gets annoying at times the way the overlords here provoke a man.

back to the thread!!!! pls i do need help, cos for 1 am simply stuck halfways here, am of two minds about this issue anyway.

i recently acqiured one of them 3g usb thingys, a HUAWEI E156G from mtn and promptly looked for the unlock code and unlocked it. it actually worked OOTB, well the first few days it seems, both in ubuntu and windows!

overnite i was trying to use my jaunty box at home and found it had a strange behavior, it would connect, work perfectly for like 5 mins then stop. its still apparently connected yet its not sending or recieving packets! the browser keeps spitting out error messages about not being connected.

at first i thot nothing of it, only to get to work and find that on my karmic box its the same, infact it worked for like 30 mins then stopped. i was surprised and after looking through and reconnecting it a couple of times, i gave up and booted into my vista partition to try it, at first the behavior was kinda the same, but after like three tries, it worked for 5 hrs straight with no issues (i was beginning to think it was the modem itself that was faulty but this made me think again)


im trying it in karmic again and its back to the same beat, on the same pc! my fone works just fine as a modem anyways.

so im trying to decide if this is a hardware thingy or just compatibility issues or if something has gone wrong somewhere settings wise.

WHAT IV TRIED SO FAR

lsusb lists it as Huawei but the model no as E220! surely cant be that no?
even the networking wizard does that too but it does connect fine, just wont send packets

iv tried to use the net tools, ping gives no returns at all, or rather the first two packets get returns then zilch!!

suggestions on how to trouble shoot this thing. one mind tells me it may be dns issues, another says the usb modem is bad!

NB i have a method of enabling you to browse with the old turntable box phone. i will connect it to vodafone uk and u will get braodband speed, asap.

hmmn, was looking for this thread. recently acquired this modem thingy, though i was told i had to write an exam, bring passport photo and probly need a visa just to give mtn my money!!! cwazy twats.

pls o, 1st question the model is E156G huawei, av unlocked it and found that i simply couldnt use glo on it! i mean, i wanted to buy glo but was told by them that they out of stock! now even as the modem is unlocked, Glo wont dial up! the sim is activated for all and sundry, wats up with that?

2ndly, i put in etisalat sim and it just did not see the network? is that the case too?

3rdly, i sorta noticed that at times, i dial up and it works for like 5 mins then the browsers and apps start complaining that im not connected to a network! yet its still connected! other times like now, its been ok for like 5 hrs! whats up with that too?


in short is this usual? have u guys experienced this before, and any solutions? before i carry horn begin they shepe for mtn

@ lynx u dont use glo shey?thats not the issue, my sim is activated and provisioned for wap and 3g. it works on the fone quite fine, i mean all those good months of haaa yori yori enjoyment! but even wap wont connect with the dumb modem! awon pple yen just dey feel smart. green liars

FOR LYNXNOON, THE TOR/VIDALIA INSTRUCTIONS. NOTE U WILL NEED TO GET PRIVOXY OR POLIPO TOO TO ENABLE IT WORK. AND U WILL NEED TO SET THE CONFIG FILE!!! I WILL UPLOAD MY PRIVOXY CONFIG HERE FOR U. JUST GO INTO /ETC/PRIVOXY AND REPLACE THE CONFIG FILE THERE. (RENAME IT BY DELETING THE .PNG)


Do not use the packages in Ubuntu's universe. They are unmaintained and out of date. That means you'll be missing stability and security fixes.

You'll need to set up our package repository before you can fetch Tor. First, you need to figure out the name of your distribution. If you're using Ubuntu 9.10, it's "karmic", while 9.04 is "jaunty", 8.10 is "intrepid", and 8.04 is "hardy". If you're using Debian Etch, it's "etch", and Debian Lenny is "lenny". Then add this line to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:

deb http://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org <DISTRIBUTION> main

where you substitute the above word (etch, lenny, sid, karmic, jaunty, intrepid, hardy) in place of <DISTRIBUTION>.

Then add the gpg key used to sign the packages by running

gpg --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv 886DDD89
gpg --export A3C4F0F979CAA22CDBA8F512EE8CBC9E886DDD89 | sudo apt-key add -

Now refresh your sources and install Tor by running

apt-get update
apt-get install tor tor-geoipdb

nah vidalia comes with tor! its a dependence sef!
U know tor is a system service, vidalia is just a GUI controller to help prevent messing too much with config files
now usually when u start the pc, tor starts along with it, what i do is pull up a terminal, and run
"sudo killall tor"

then i start vidalia normally.

but if that does not work for u, u need to uninstall it, (vidalia) then go to torproject.org, on the linux tab there is the repository and key from tor project not debian, add that one sign it then sudo install

in fact the instructions are there anyways!

that shld do the trick. then hint(get the java binary of jap) i forsee happy times ahead, just in case sha o! lol

for whatever its worth, huawei E156G 3g modem works right out the box, though i did install modeswitch a long time ago so i dunno if thats why it worked, i just plugged it in and presto!

then, i just made a monumental cockup of my 9.04 install, i was fooling around with some 9.10 debs and now my system looks kinda like windows 98 the themes work quite alrite, but the radio buttons and stuff look like windows 98, all greyed out.

when i run gksudo anutilus, terminal spits out a line with GTK20/2.10 micromismatch! anyone have ideas on how to restore sanity?

no be my fault. once bitten. i once bought a fone off a guy here. well lets just say it wasnt what i bargained for. i was very serious abt buying the modem, but as e be, i went to mtn myself. 2k is worth the rest of mind, and the modem has been performing well thank you!
