you know i agree! like i said some time ago, i tried mepis, with KDE 3.5?? and i actually liked it!!

well kubuntu may truly be shite but then thats a shame!!

now mint would actually have been really nice too but i also find all that green depressing or rather annoying, and ever so often i start thinkng of installing gnome desktop on it. but then its so energy saving, its what i use for newbies these days, i find it lets them keep the os as well, it takes some explaining and then some to tell people that the os you are introducing them too wont even play mp3 ootb, they start distrusting it immediately!

and yes, so far of all the full desktops, i think gnome runs faster, even mint runs slower noticeably for me!!

you know, since the last discussion, i did a wubi install of 9.10 Kde and hmmn, im still not there./

stuff do not work and i dnt know why. a major ish is internet, my usb modem that works ootb in gnome refused to connect though apparently it was recognised, i tried and tried for hours!!!
then when i used my fone and decided to use my fbt apps and set a proxy, the proxy settings thingy kept on misbehaving and adding http:// to the front of my proxy. i did not put that there, kept on coming back.

then i tried to refresh kpackage kit to download latest updates, no way, did not work.
tried using terminal, did not recognise my network connection
then started amarok and tried to add my music folder on anor partition which i mounted, kept crashing religiously.

bottomline, goodluck with that, even xubuntu gave me no issues!!!!

i tried them two weeks back and for 4 days i couldnt get any joy from them, they had better sell that coy fast!!! what a waste of a 3g license, if etisalat had that they would be groovy now!!! zain is the portfolio coy of the decade!!!

@ V3, YUP I KNOW WAT U SAYING. a few months back i posted a 4 mbps shot on mtn on my linux box right on this same thread, folks really didnt believe.

the thing is, realistically, u and i know that its aint like that. see early in the morning if i boost my tortoise, the first download i try starts with a burst of 4-5mbps, then slows down to reasonable speeds, do i think i actually get that, NO. can i make it such that i seem to get that Yes!

besides, wat we usually post is near to the very peak of the speeds we get, we dont get that consistently!!!!


anyways, i just found out a way to overclock my connect on my linux box, unfortunately it wont work with tortoise cos the relays dont like bandwidth hogging. with my 3gb monthly, id be through with it in an hour. maybe will go and make life miserable for the cafe owner round my place this weekend (havent been in one in 2 years)

but undoubtedly, at your work place, i can bet u guys are on Hyconnect

@ mavtrevor, is that fone video call capable? as in 3g compliant? if its not, then that explains ur dilemma, and fyi that speed is not the best a modem or even fone can do. we have 7.2mbps modems, i recently saw a nokia fone with 10 mbps modem in it too. that average 3g modem is 3.6 mbps so, fill in the blanks


if the network signal strength u get is very good, if u are making 300KBps on your modem, any way u test it will take a hop of say 3-5 secs, which means 300x3 secs= 900KBps! that also explains why IDM shots are so fantastic, along with other factors like the server u donloading from, distance to it etc etc

BROS the zain connection on pc will work if you use the internet.ng.zain.com apn.
i presume you are on vista? thats what happens on vista when u dial up zain with the wap apn.

ur settings should be: apn-: internet.ng.zain.com
username: internet password: internet.
incase your sim has not been activated for that apn, call customer care o!

on xp even wap works perfectly

sorry for the misinformation about puppy, i actually meant a puppy derivative, lighthouse pup which i often forget isnt actually bare bones puppy linux! it offers a KDE desktop enviroment and its ok i guess. i like it incidentally. but mostly just because its puppy linux and i can afford to brick my install it without much hassle

i honestly think its where you start out from, and then you could switch if u like. like u did.

actually the extensible/customizable aspect of KDE desktop is what is really great about it, maybe i will get that on 10.04 and then try to see if i can tweak it reasonably enough to get to like it. one condition though is that the menu HAS to be at the top of the page and not at the bottom i couldnt move it in 9.04, and a promptly formatted. lol dnt mind me jare

Gnome is truly UGLY!! but i guess thats what i like about it. ubuntu's rendition of gnome out of the box is atrocious brown/orange backgrounds and wallpapers, funny looking icons, beauty is just a few clicks away, besides the new ones come customisable too, transparency, added tabs etc etc. its cool u know!!!

hey rovar wats the buzz like on 10.04? are there issues like 9.10 or this is gonna be smooth sailing. i dunno where to get 'unbiased' opinions on testing.

my major grouse with KDE is the fact that well it how do i put it, looks the same thru all the distros iv tried!!!! gnome does too but thats the minimalist effect i guess, KDE promises well a lot and i boot up ubuntu, mepis, even puppy linux and my desktop looks exactly the same!!!!! (just griping anyways lol)

hmmn, well i try it, and i just find myself after a week longing for gnome!! and the menu and submenus and windows feel just cooks it all, too busy, too many layers, i have to try to remember different stuff even simple ones like Kate is my text editor not Gedit !!!! and i dislike the package management system in KUBUNTU anyway

sigh, i jst give up and install gnome.

for the flat, send activate to 127, take it from there. it wont work on ur sim if u dont send that, if i remember glo very well, till date glo3gvideo refuses to work on my sim!
