oskaroni: thanks bro.but am still confused about backup via cwm, I have recovery tools installed, after installing it, it asked me to backup, which I chose yes, but showed 'failed to backup' u asked me to backup, but how?
what recovery tools?

u have to have CWM installed via MTK Droid Tools / SPFT

if you dont know anything about these two things i suggest you stop right there and not bother about any of this stuff.

u backup when you switch off, then hold up button and power till you boot into CWM

oskaroni: nice one bro, I've got cwm to do a backup but no image file to flash it,ur help is needed, and which available ROM can I flash on it?,
do a CWM backup anyway.

i don't know of any ROM. i'm presently trying to port MIUI. if successful i will upload for you.

oskaroni: Lastly your steps are not detailed, I.e how do I change d DPI and d stuffs u mentioned above?

Please Take a CWM back up and install an alternate launcher before doing that. that rubbish launcher will stop working the moment u change DPI

you change DPI by installing "Root Explorer"

Root Explorer Method

Step 1: Open Root Explorer ("allow" superuser if first time loading) and you should be at the root partition. / Scroll down and select "system". You should now be located in /system.

Step 2: Select the "Mount R/W" button at the top. The "r/o" to the left of the button should change to "r/w".

Step 3: long press then copy it. paste it on sdcard as backup.

go back to /system Long press build.prop and "Open in Text Editor".

Step 4: Scroll about half way down and find the line "ro.sf.lcd_density=160". Change it to a value you like 178/213 (I'm tried 213 and everything is BIG). Don't go higher

Step 5: Select the "menu" button on your phone and then select "Save Changes". Root Explorer will make a nice build.prop.bak backup for you.

Step 6: reboot.

oskaroni: I also have xposed installer and gravity box installed, abeg help me o, a lot of fins we have to deal with including maximising the battery life, I've under clocked it,but still looking for alternatives.thanks
i don't know of other things for this device.......yet

like i said i don't intend to really use the tab. the screen was poorer than i thot it will be so its a tinkering device, it has been in permanent CWM since 7 this morning.

maybe when i take it apart and i change the battery to that of a real device i may use it a bit.... that's not till maybe weekend, depending on how much time i have

PhonesRe: Ainol Numy 3g Ax3 Sword-discussion Thread by 4llerbuntu(m):
yes I bought it specifically to learn about mtk porting.

Ubuntu Touch is going to be released on mtk devices by some OEMS in about a month and it will take some time to get phones running Qualcomm chips to buy,

so yes. I'm in the process of porting miui right now. it boots already. fixing bugs.

as soon as I know the exact chip to target I will order another reference device. this is for breaking ground.

lack of sources though is an issue but for ubuntu we will get to use it anyhow.

*** Tip***

Root and change the DPI in the build.prop t0 176 or 213

i find the 160 ridiculous for the low res screen, the status bar is barely there to drag down. everything is too small.

the damn thing is way better as close to Phablet UI as possible

if u really require Tablet UI use Xposed to force specific apps.

its not a OEM. cheesy cheesy wink wink
PhonesRe: Android, Anyone? Part II by 4llerbuntu(m):
continued:

Despite its enormous success with entry-level smartphones in emerging markets, MediaTek have yet to make a name for themselves in the West. Fair enough, being known for cheap handsets will create challenges to entering the high-end market, but that hasn’t stopped them from coming out with the world first 4G LTE octa-core processor – announced yesterday – and even setting up shop in Qualcomm’s backyard by opening an office in San Diego. But perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised, especially when you take into consideration that MediaTek is actually bigger than either Broadcom or Nvidia.

But as MediaTek push into the US, Qualcomm seeks to gain a foothold in China. So let’s take a closer look at that because this race has less to do with System-on-Chips than it does with LTE support. MediaTek’s Octa-core processor with LTE put Qualcomm on alert because they traditionally enjoyed a comfortable lead when it came to LTE integration. I found some stats on Android Authority from Strategy Analytics which describe how in Q3 2013, 66% of their cellular revenue came from LTE. Meanwhile MediaTek claimed second place 12% share, and Intel in third with 7%. Qualcomm even has a relationship with China Mobile to get their LTE devices into the hands of its local market.

Yesterday’s announcement in Shenzhen is a big statement of intent, with the company rolling out a system-on-chip that ticks all the boxes for high-end smartphone integration. A smart combination of performance, LTE support, high-end camera features and much more mean that MediaTek now have a solid high-end offering.

Even still, it is a numbers game and if MediaTek’s SoC performance is at the same level as Qualcomm’s mid range SoC offering, but at a lower price, it won’t take MediaTek long to catch up. But even on a more base level, let me tell you about a meeting that I had in Shenzhen with Gionee. I asked about developing on Qualcomm vs MediaTek. They said, MediaTek will get back to you within the hour, Qualcomm will get back to you the next day. When I mentioned Intel, they just laughed.

Consumers might find it frustrating that MediaTek takes a little longer to come out with the latest version of Android, but the reason is that they are doing all the work for their partners.
When you’re competing with a company that understands customer service and software integration better than anyone else right now, it’s going to be hard not to see them as a real threat.
Three things.

One:
Mediatek is yet to attain the size of Qualcomm etc.

if they have to deal with major vendors like samsung with over 30 devices in the market at once, they will quickly find out that support is very hard.

Two:
Their business model essentially means there will be no differentiation in devices across board from various OEMS.

Nobody with a sound business plan can adopt them, except you want to play the "ME TOO" game on the low end.

Basically this is a major reason why Samsung is big. their R&grin and SOC's are developed in house. they can do what they want.
They need to improve the low end though.

Three:
This model means the idea of updates for Mediatek devices is a non-starter.

why would the company spend money to provide updates for SOC's they already sold when not a kobo will come from that?

They can simply spend that effort for their newer chips for future sales.

Finally, if Mediatek really wants to join the big league they need to join the game by putting up sources for the SOC for the public.

That way they could easily be the reference point for dev work. cheap devices that can be hacked. sure winner on XDA
PhonesRe: Android, Anyone? Part II by 4llerbuntu(m):
Saw this interesting article on this site : http://www.mobilegeeks.com/a-brief-history-of-mediatek-and-how-they-came-to-take-on-qualcomm/

and decided to share.

i'm going to highlight a few details in it which explain a lot of what goes on about those devices which must not be named. Mostly news to me but then figures.

Back in 1997 MediaTek was spun off from United Micro Electronics Corporation, becoming one of Taiwan’s first semi-conductor companies back in 1980. The company began life making chipsets for home entertainment centers and optical disk drives. In 2004 they entered the mobile feature phone market with a unique approach. Instead of just selling processors, they sold complete packages; a chip plus a compatible operating system all ready baked in. Essentially they were one of the first companies to offer modular reference designs.
Basically this explains why Chinese so-called 'OEMS' generally release devices with the same specs over and over. and why they all release devices with Android 4.2.2 across board.

Mediatek sells their processors tailored to specific builds of software

what their customers do is design casing or just buy them, and other parts and assemble.
this means many Chinese so-called OEMS like Tecno are marketing companies, not a tech companies.

To make the switch they will need to buy the software sources/drivers for the hardware from Mediatek and other component makers and employ a Dev Team.

very few actually do this.

This approach vastly reduced labor-intensive R&grin costs for manufacturers, and more importantly, reduced the barrier to entry for many smaller companies who manufactured and retailed phones under their own brand name. This is why most people have never heard of MediaTek, a company who were content to enable the success of others. This is particularly true in emerging markets like China, where MediaTek where able to leverage the manufacturing powerhouse of China’s Shenzhen.

MediaTek rose to prominence selling processor and software packages for feature phones, but by 2012 the feature phone market was quickly disappearing. MediaTek had to move on and re-focus on smartphones, and it arguably took them longer then they should have. Regardless, as of 2013 they were applying the same strategy they used to dominate the entry-level smartphone market. They are already in bed with all the significant emerging market players including ZTE, Huawei, Gionee and Alcatel. Getting manufacturers on your side is a great way to gain market share when carriers don’t have much control. Plus unsubsidized handsets sales tend to make people purchase more affordable devices, another key reason for MediaTek’s success and high sales volumes.
