Foreign AffairsRe: Condolence Register For Ghadaffi : by 4Play(m): 7:25pm On Oct 24, 2011
No brain cells in these Gadaffi apologists. Libya had a small population relative to its oil wealth so even though Gaddaffi and his family were looting the country, they had enough left over to make the place relatively better off than your average African state.

As for his pan-African rhetoric, it is all vacuous dross belied by some of his actions including the invasion of neighbouring Chad, twice, and the sponsoring of genocidal rebel groups in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Remember the RUF against whom Nigerian soldiers fought and died and who specialised in ra-ping and amputating limbs?

It is sad that some Africans are so gullible that they look with admiration upon a blood thirsty dictator whose own people have emphatically rejected him.

PoliticsRe: Jonathan Depletes Nigeria's Foreign Reserve By $3.5 Billion In 2011 Alone by 4Play(m): 8:02am On Oct 19, 2011

President Goodluck Jonathan's financial recklessness has further depleted the strategic foreign reserve of the Nigerian state by $3.5 billion in 2011 alone, according to information obtained by SaharaReporters.

A source at the ministry of finance told SaharaReporters at the weekend that when Mr. Jonathan came into office, he met a robust foreign reserve in place, but this year alone, he and his gluttonous inner circle have frittered away $3 billion of the reserves, which is now at $32 billion, down from $35 billion in January.
Reserves in Africa's top crude exporter did rise sharply to $34.59 billion by Oct. 14, from a multi-year low of $30.86 billion on Oct. 7, the central bank latest figures showed. The reserves were at the same level a year ago.

The above does not mean GEJ has been fiscally prudent.
PoliticsRe: Jonathan Depletes Nigeria's Foreign Reserve By $3.5 Billion In 2011 Alone by 4Play(m): 8:03pm On Oct 18, 2011
This report is bizarre for its gratuitous ignorance. The foreign reserves are not managed by Jonathan but by the CBN. I suppose you can blame Jonathan for creating a fiscal situation that has put pressure on the Naira ''compelling'' the CBN to deplete the reserves in support of the Naira but I have always been of the view that Sanusi should allow the Naira to fall and not use the reserves to prop it.

However, for the report to create the impression that GEJ has ''spent'' the reserves reflects the appallingly misinformed guff that is produced in public debates in Nigeria. You can't help but wonder whether it is true we have lower IQs than the West and Asia and whether, as a consequence, our condition and Govt is a reflection of us. On the one hand you have an incompetent and corrupt political class, on the other, a benighted public.

U ar either a govt official or a member of the cabal, telecom is not fuel, they ar very different things, do u know PPPRA,the agency incharge of setting up d price template nd paying subsidy to marketers, obviously u dnt,u just read sm few news in d papers nd dat GEJ's post about steve jobs, then swallow nd digest evrythn d govt tells u.
Whether its telecom services or fuel products, a deregulated market will not give rise to a cabal as market competition drives pricing.

No marketer will build any refinery for you when they are not going to recoup the costs since the Govt has fixed the price of fuel at N65. As for the Govt building refineries, haven't you learnt anything from the refineries the Govt has built so far or things like the power generation plants that the Govt has been building?
CareerRe: Airtel Agrees To Recall 3,000 Sacked Workers by 4Play(m): 12:22pm On Oct 11, 2011
In the end, stories like this about the Nigerian business environment discourages foreign investment and job creation. Why invest in Nigeria when you have an expensive business environment and why hire workers when it will be difficult to manage your manage staff cost by downsizing as the need arises.
PoliticsRe: New Wage: 16 States Risk Bankruptcy, Says Report by 4Play(m): 12:11pm On Oct 11, 2011
Blackteeth:
Nigeria can't afford the increased minimum wage for the masses but can afford increasing the wages for the president, governors and lawmakers.
Whilst there is a valid point about the financial cost of our political class, you can't deny the reality that Nigeria cannot afford the ever increasing cost of the public sector. You can't have states, as this article notes, like Zamfara and Niger spending 70% and 72% of their revenue on civil servants who, even if you count their dependants, are not more than 5% of the population. Those states need investment in schools, hospitals, roads, e.t.c, which they cannot make as almost all their money is spent on a tiny segment of the population.

Ehmm . . . the US is trying to stop China artificially weakening their currency not the other way round. China, by weakening its currency, makes its exports cheaper relative to other exporters who have a floating currency.
PoliticsRe: Abacha's Regime Was One Of The Best Performing Governments In Our History by 4Play(m): 11:18am On Oct 11, 2011
Since independence, we have never had a government that is remotely competent. It's been a tale of unrelenting ineptitude and in assessing Nigeria's Govts, the question is not who was best but who was the least inept. In my view, OBJ's second regime, 1999 - 2007, is the least inept or least objectionable. Shagari's era constitutes the worst of an appalling bunch as we were plunged into economic collapse.
BusinessRe: Naira Drops to N200 To A US Dollar by 4Play(m): 8:31pm On Oct 09, 2011
The Naira is falling because Nigeria's main source of foreign currency is oil exports and the price of crude has been falling. Further, there has been a 'flight to safety' in the financial markets,i.e, investors buy up ''safer'' assets such as the dollar and US Treasuries in response to fears over a global slowdown. You will notice that the dollar has strengthened against the UK pounds sterling, the Euro and pretty much every other currency in the world.

We clearly need to diversify our economy and our export base so that we are not hostage to the price of crude oil. There doesn't seem to be any long term economic plan by GEJ to address this issue.
BusinessRe: Current Price Of Petrol Without Subsidy: ₦142.92 Per Litre by 4Play(m): 8:05pm On Oct 09, 2011
toba:
lets go down memory lane
Babangida regime price/litre was N5

Abacha increased the price to N11 in 1994 or so

Abdulsalam increased the price to N20 in 1998

OBJ increased the price to N22 in 2000

OBJ increased price to N26 in 2002

Obj increased price to N30 in 2003

OBJ increased price to N37 in 2003

OBJ increased price to N40 in 2003

Obj increased price to N42 in 2004

Obj increased price to N50 in 2005

Obj increased price to N65 in 2005(which led to the death of ubani, the journalist on his way to Abuja to protest the increment)

Obj increased price to N75 in May 2007

Yar adua reduced price to N70 in June 2007 after nation wide strike

Yar adua in 2009 reduced price to N65 during the global reccession when a barrel of crude oil was sold for under $60

I hope i got the dates right but the progression is very correct from Babangida to Goodluck. So new refineries could be built in over 25 years? during this period, Nigeria imported fuel from different countries including Libya in 2005 that damaged many cars in the country during Abacha's regime. too bad
The value of money is in what it can buy. The N5 of the early 90s is probably equivalent to N150-N200 today, I'm taking a wild guess but you get the point. There is therefore no point in telling us that fuel used to sell for N5 as if that is a valid argument against fuel increase.

Foreign AffairsMost Men In Nigeria Are Lazy - Baroness Flather by 4Play(op): 12:27am On Sep 28, 2011
www.nairaland.com/attachments/535038_baroness_jpgb71819033a7fd3dbdd0dbe162c31a7a8
Controversial peer Baroness Flather caused outrage yesterday with a claim that Nigerian men marry four wives because they are lazy.

Speaking on a radio phone-in debate on polygamy, she said: ‘Most of the men in Nigeria don’t do anything, their wives do all the work, that’s why they have so many.’

Lady Flather spoke out after a Nigerian caller told how his father had four wives, they all lived together in the same house without arguments and their 11 children were all well educated.

The crossbencher, Britain’s first female Asian peer, recently made controversial claims that some Asian families in Britain have lots of children in order to claim extra welfare payments.

Yesterday’s comments were made as she spoke as a guest on the BBC Radio 5 Breakfast show, presented by Nicky Campbell.

Campbell was joined in the studio by Khola Hasan, of the Islamic Sharia Council, which says polygamy is on the rise among British Muslims.

Following the peer’s comment, embarrassed laughter could be heard before Mrs Hasan said: ‘That’s a bit unfair’.

Campbell then interjected: ‘If I’d said what you’ve just said I’d be in the papers tomorrow for racism, wouldn’t I?’

But the baroness went on: ‘They have four wives – one to do the farming, one to look after the children, one to look after the man and one to do the housework. It is just a fact. Why should I lie?’

Two British Nigerians later called the show and condemned the comments, pointing out that polygamy is a sign of affluence rather than idleness.

Last night Radio 5 said the peer’s views were ‘entirely her own’.

HOUSTON — At home in Nigeria, the Pentecostal preacher Helen Ukpabio draws thousands to her revival meetings. Last August, when she had herself consecrated Christendom’s first “lady apostle,” Nigerian politicians and Nollywood actors attended the ceremony. Her books and DVDs, which explain how Satan possesses children, are widely known.

So well-known, in fact, that Ms. Ukpabio’s critics say her teachings have contributed to the torture or abandonment of thousands of Nigerian children — including infants and toddlers — suspected of being witches and warlocks. Her culpability is a central contention of “Saving Africa’s Witch Children,” a documentary that will make its American debut Wednesday on HBO2.

PoliticsRe: I Did Not Steer Any Contract To My Brother — Okonjo-iweala by 4Play(m): 7:06pm On Sep 11, 2011
Kobo,

2 of those cases, El-Rufai and Iweala,  stand out because they have little substance behind the allegations. Daukoro and Bode George were charged, Ita-Giwa & Anenih indicted and Okorocha dismissed. These cases have a little bit more detail or substance behind the allegation.

The starting point with the Iweala case is that she steered a contract towards a brother called JonJon, except she has no brother called JonJon. I think someone has pointed out before that it would have been hard for her to get back to her World Bank position if there was some substantive corruption issue with her.

I don't see her case as any different from some of the rumors swirling about Sanusi, the CBN Governor, where in effect people against the policy direction spread suggestions of corruption or some other malfeasance.

PoliticsRe: Wikileaks: Okonjo Iweala Corrupt! Gave Brother $50m Jobs by 4Play(m): 7:14pm On Sep 09, 2011
Look at the Governor of Imo state.

The head of the National Airport Management Authority (NAMA), Rochas Okorocha, was caught and dismissed for embezzling about $1 million through an inflated contract;Obasanjo then appointed him as a senior aide, without requiring Okorocha to repay the stolen funds. Okorocha was eventually fired on July 13 in a cabinet reshuffle, but went on to start a political party for his renewed presidential ambitions.
It's clear Nigeria is a den of thieves. When you realise that many of the major political players who enjoy some popular support, GEJ in the South-South, Tinubu in the South West and Okorocha in the South-East are all a bunch of thieves, it shows we deserve the leaders we get.

Sometimes, I wonder why you strive so hard to maintain an aura of pig-like daftness. Everybody knows that the term KGB represents Russian intelligence, it might even interest you to know that the Soviet KBG continues to exist unchanged (name and all) in some of the old Soviet Union states.

This is the KBG headquarters in Minsk and a link to their website. Stop being eternally silly and attend to the topic or shut up, sir.

Beaf, the KGB has been disbanded since the fall of the Soviet Union. The KGB headquarters you refer to is for the intelligence agency of Belarus. Minsk is the capital of Belarus. The Tribune, however, refers to the Russian KGB which doesn't exist.

PoliticsRe: If Buhari Had Won The April Polls by 4Play(m): 6:40pm On Aug 31, 2011
What's this about if Buhari was in power, we already had a taste of his leadership in his previous stint as President. Is it that you folks have no sense of history? We had record levels of sovereign debt and were shut out of the credit markets. We had extremely high levels of inflation as the economy contracted sharply.

Nigeria was technically insolvent at the time at the time of IBB's coup. These are things anyone with a sense of history can verify. If you are unable to access reading material on that era, you can at least look up Google archive. Support for Buhari is the triumph of hope over experience. Not that GEJ is much better.
