can you point to one shred of evidence that the West was NOT involved in yesterday's attack in Abuja?
This is why I said you are not rational. The onus is clearly on those who assert the existence of something, in this case Western involvement in this bombing, to prove its existence. I cannot prove the negative. I think Boko Haram is involved because at least they state so and I do not deem the Islamists in Nigeria as Western agents

Why do you on the other hand state that the West is involved without a shred of evidence showing their involvement?

Instead of engaging in personal insults, can those who condemn GEJ for these attacks tell us specifically what they would do if they were the President which would end these attacks. What particular measures would you take that will end terrorism?

It will take years of arduous work involving both intelligence operations and negotiations to defeat terrorism in Nigeria. I think we would see something similar to the Algerian civil war, you can call it the 2nd Nigerian civil war. It will get worse before it gets better.
PoliticsRe: Drivers Complain Low Patronage In Aregbesola's Oshogbo by 4Play(m): 12:55pm On Aug 21, 2011
A taxi driver in Oshogbo, who craved anonymity, condemned the reluctance of the workers to shift ground for the State Government and bring an end to the strike.

He called on the workers to agree with the government's modalities for the implementation of the N18, 000 minimum wage, adding that public servants were not the only people that needed government attention in the state.

“If Aregbesola use all the state allocation to pay salary, what happen to our roads and other areas that need attention?” he asked.
I'm glad ordinary Nigerians are beginning to see that this workers' salary increase is a diversion of wealth to unionised labour. Most Nigerians don't work for the Govt nor are they dependants of those who do yet, we have demands for almost all Govt expenditure to be spent on a tiny segment of the populace.
PoliticsRe: President Goodluck Jonathan Takes Credit For Single Digit Inflation Rate by 4Play(m): 12:32pm On Aug 21, 2011
His posts are a bit of a joke. If one person deserves credit, it's Sanusi who as the Central Bank Gov tries to manage inflation by setting interest rates and maintaining the Naira's exchange rates.

In any case, this is just one report and there is no cause for celebration until we maintain a single digit inflation rate over a considerable period.

The rapid rise in inflation is a global phenomenon for emerging markets, so it's not unique to Nigeria.

There are disputes regarding the significance of a downgrade of US credit ratings but it will certainly mean more expensive credit for everyone - your loans will be more expensive for instance.

For Nigeria, the risk is that the world is going into Credit Crisis 2 and I know we're not prepared with foreign reserves barely increased despite the rise in oil prices and our 'rainy day' fund severely depleted already. We're in uncharted territory and it's not going to be fun.
Foreign AffairsNigerian Nurse Says The Bible Forbids Women From Wearing Trousers by 4Play(op): 6:48pm On Aug 02, 2011
A christian midwife is suing hospital bosses for making her wear scrub trousers rather than a dress in the operating theatre, saying it is against her religious beliefs.

Devout Hannah Adewole claims wearing trousers is forbidden in the Bible, citing a command that women should not wear men's clothing.

The 45-year-old says she was banned from wearing scrub dresses in theatre but Muslim midwives are allowed to vary official uniform policy with their own hijabs and tops.

She told a tribunal: "A Muslim midwife would not have been treated in such a disrespectful manner."
Mrs Adewole is suing Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust for religious discrimination and harassment.

As a midwife at City University London, Mrs Adewole was ordered to wear scrub trousers to prevent infection. When she refused, she was moved from the labour ward to post-natal care.

Mrs Adewole, of Hackney, said: "Reading the Bible has always given me strength. I believe that the Bible is truth and that its words should be followed wholeheartedly."

She told the tribunal she considers wearing dresses rather than trousers "a mandatory requirement". Mrs Adewole started work as a £24,000-a-year midwife at Queen's in March 2008.

She alleges that she was assured at interview that her uniform demands would be met. The Trust's policy provided for "uniform suitable for Muslims" but had no equivalent rules for Christians, the tribunal heard.

The Trust, which has now given her two scrub dresses, claims that theatre uniform was never discussed at the interview. The tribunal continues.

PoliticsRe: Labour Groups Vow To Get Minimum Wage By All Means by 4Play(m): 9:36am On Jul 31, 2011
It's amazing organised labour in Nigeria only fights for salary increments which in the long run does not improve living standards as inflation and the bad policy environment eats away at increases. You never hear about labour going on strikes over the power situation is fixed or in protest against acts of corruption or the innumerable acts of ineptitude that ails this country.

They have a narrow minded view which is exclusively about getting more wages. Obviously, they're fighting for their perception of self-interest but to have a situation where Nigeria's statutory minimum wage far exceeds that of other countries at the same level of economic development is not in the national interest. The public wage bill is excessive and we can't achieve any meaningful growth if the bulk of Govt spending goes towards paying workers' salaries when those workers and their dependants constitute a tiny minority of the population. The amazing thing is that the average Nigerian doesn't see this proving once again that we're not a very bright bunch. You get the country you deserve, I guess.

What a wonderful country.

LAGOS — Nigerian security forces killed at least 23 people after a bomb blast blamed on Islamists over the weekend, allegedly randomly shooting and burning a market, Amnesty International said on Monday.

The allegations were the latest against Nigerian security forces operating in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, which has been hit by scores of bomb blasts and gun attacks blamed on an Islamist sect known as Boko Haram.

"The Nigerian authorities must immediately put a stop to unlawful killings by security forces," the rights group said in a statement.

", At least 23 people were killed by police following a bomb blast on Saturday in the northeastern city of Maiduguri."

Amnesty said the Joint Military Task Force, assigned to Maiduguri to deal with the wave of attacks, responded to the bomb blast with heavy force. The military has said the blast wounded three soldiers.

"According to reports received by Amnesty International, the Nigerian Joint Military Task Force responded by shooting and killing a number of people, apparently at random, before burning down the market," it said.

Foreign AffairsRe: So Oyinbo Too Dey Bomb; Norwegian Bombing Carried Out By Norwegian Citizen And Not Muslims by 4Play(m): 1:24pm On Jul 24, 2011
Acts of terror are carried out in the name of Islam everyday. Finding 1 incident where an act of terror was carried out, purportedly in the name of Christianity, does not disprove the exceptionally violent nature of many of the Muslim faith. You can say that this case is an exception that proves the norm.

There are also many incidents where acts of terror have been perpetrated by those of no faith in the name of one secular ideology or the other. While violence has been associated with countless causes, whether faith based or secular, it's the frequent resort to violence in the name of Islam that makes Islam unique.

texazzpete:
I seem to recall the Naira falling from N118 to a dollar to N152 under Soludo. Shame on him too?
That occurred when oil prices went from $147 p/b to $33 p/b and the USD spiked against other currencies which meant that Soludo could not have done anything other than manage the Naira's decline.

The difference today is that oil prices are high and the USD is weak, yet, the Naira is still weak. That's more the fault of the FG and its reckless spending but little to do with Sanusi. My gripe with him is that he is wasting foreign reserves trying to hold the Naira's official rate in a narrow band between N155 - N150 when the real value of the Naira is much lower.
BusinessRe: Lamido Sanusi's Performance - Brilliant, Over-hyped, Or Mediocre? by 4Play(m): 8:43pm On Jul 10, 2011
I haven't been up to speed in Nigerian issues to comment fully but I agree, I think I've made this point before here, that our Central Bank governor has to be someone with impeccable academic credentials. This is not an ode to credentialism but a recognition that, unlike the developed countries with a depth of highly qualified support staff, the governor has to have an excellent mastery of the pertinent issues.  This is where Sanusi is lacking.

He does, however, trump  the likes of Soludo in respect of personal integrity, at least, by Nigerian standards. Not sure whether that makes up for his other competent issues.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Mum Flew Into Britain And Had Quinns by 4Play(m): 6:21am On Jul 09, 2011
The Nigerian woman who travelled to Britain to give birth to quins at the taxpayer’s expense is married to a wealthy businessman.
Bimbo Ayelabola, 33, had two boys and three girls in April by caesarean section and remained in hospital for almost two weeks, costing the NHS up to £200,000.
Her visitor’s visa has expired and she is now fighting to remain in this country, claiming a return to her home city of Lagos would leave her homeless and without a ‘support network’ to help her raise her five children.
However the Daily Mail has learnt that her husband, who remains in Nigeria, is a wealthy businessman.
University-educated Ohi Nasir Ilavbare is chief executive of his own logistics company whose clients include British American Tobacco and DHL.
He also owns and runs an upmarket hotel and business centre in an exclusive suburb of Lagos, where his company, Spry Logistics, is based.
Suites at the facility in a gated complex cost £100 a night. The average annual wage in Nigeria is around £300.

PoliticsRe: Lagos Rains: Women Protest Flooding In Lekki Area by 4Play(m): 7:46pm On Jul 05, 2011
GAR3TH:
Lets put things in perspective.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has commenced plans for a N150 billion BENIN CITY STORM WATER MASTER PLAN. This master-plan is currently under construction and is design to stop the flooding and erosions in Benin city.

We should note that he had to Lobby to the federal government for him to get additional funding for this project. We should also note that Benin City has a population of 1.1 million people.

Now for the perspective. If Benin City, a population of 1.1 million, with the assistance of the FG, is currently paying N150 Billion ($1billion) for a storm water master-plan Imagine what a place like Lagos a population of 17 million will have to pay for its storm water master-plan. Something more or less to the tune of $17 Billion (N2.5 trillion). In other words, money Lagos does not have.

Fashola cant do everything, and from the looks of it lagos will have this flood problem for a while. Basically, the citizens of Lagos need to stop building houses in flood prone areas and stop illegally blocking drainages. At least stop until lagos  State get the situation under control.
Wouldn't the proper comparison be with the geographical mass of the area you are protecting and the scale of the flooding threat? Comparing spending on a per head basis makes no sense.
Foreign AffairsRe: Why Do So Many Young Black People Die From Violent Attacks In Uk These Days by 4Play(m): 7:38pm On Jul 05, 2011
I'm not sure the murder rate in the UK is exceptional. The murder rate in the US is certainly higher. The fact that wall to wall coverage is given to each death is telling. In Nigeria, it's only when prominent people die or numerous deaths occur in a spectacular outbreak of violence that the media attention is grabbed.

British scroungers scrounging on Britain's money is a different to a Nigerian who's already cost Britain £200k. She's already scrounged more than many scroungers and as if that's not enough, she's purportedly breaking British law for good measure.

The Nigerian who cost the NHS up to £200,000 after travelling to Britain while expecting quintuplets has been illegally working as an Avon lady.

PoliticsRe: Ajimobi Declares Assets, Has N292.4M In Banks, Owns Houses In US, UK - 2011 by 4Play(m): 8:01am On Jul 05, 2011
kalokalo:
To correct some misconception here, National Oil and Chemical Marketing Company (NOLCHEM) was NOT a subsidiary of Shell. It was a government owned company that was privatized in 2001 to Conpetro (owned by Mike Adenuga) who changed the name to Conoil Plc.

I can understand Ajimobi made his money from a mismanaged and loss-making government enterprise (as Managing Director). As a matter of fact, that company only started making profit after it was privatized. I know this because I wanted to buy the shares after it the government privatized it.
Thanks for that correction. How do you buy mortgage financed properties in UK with assets solely in Nigeria. He's got properties in the UK worth £2.4m. I presume he put down at least a 10% deposit, £240k.

He's effectively become a millionaire working as a public official.
PoliticsRe: Ajimobi Declares Assets, Has N292.4M In Banks, Owns Houses In US, UK - 2011 by 4Play(m): 7:47pm On Jul 04, 2011
According to the form filled by the governor, the total amount of cash he has in banks in the country is N292, 432, 107.00 while he has none in any foreign account.

The governor also declared that he had a mansion in Ibadan worth N250m, a building in the same city worth N150m, another one with the value of N300m in Lagos, as well as a detached house worth N300m in Abuja.

He added that he had a flat purchased through mortgage financing worth £450,000 in the United Kingdom, another worth £1.95m, purchased through mortgage in the UK and another house worth $1.5m in the United States of America.

Ajimobi also declared that he owned 131 acres of farm land in a village at the Ido Local Government area of Ibadan worth N150m, two Lagos-based companies, Viz Grandex Nigeria Limited, worth N200m and Network Petroleum Nigeria Limited, worth N260m.

The governor put the worth of all his vehicles at N94.25m and household furniture, which include generating sets and electronics at N25m.
Let's see:
Cash - N292m
House in Ibadan - N250m
Another house in Ibadan - N150m
House in Lagos - N300m
House in Abuja - N300m

That's nearly N1.3bn (or around $8.5m) in Nigeria alone before counting the declared assets abroad. Clearly, most of his wealth is from his time as Senator not his time as the MD of the subsidiary of Shell.
