I have been meaning to ask people this, to understand the reasons for such positions on this particular matter.

What do you think?

Would you prefer to live in a world without religion?

Why?

or

Why not?

we have to understand what religion is, from your own perspective before we can answer this controversial question

I would have preferred a world where the kind of religion that is practiced around me does not exist.

Believing in anything can always exist. But if religion is all about what I am seeing...

- different beliefs hating on each other and condemning themselves..
- people praying instead of acting and thinking their useless prayers is effective, thereby indulging in self deciet..
- indirectly promoting laziness and living a wish
- Living a hypocritic life and a holier than thou life
- deliberately being a sheeple..

Religion should just go if possible... But mugus must always exist.

I would have preferred a world without religion. It would be a more peaceful world because Muslims would not have to kill others, Christians would not have to make noises into our ears and traditional worshippers would not have to 'taboolarize' everything or use fellow humans for rituals.

Are there other institutions or structures that are also sources of violence as religion?

Are there other sources of noise other than religion?

Ok, so basically you are just against certain aspects of religion and not an entire erosion of the entire institution?

Yea... We can't deny that is has its good side or good intentions. We have seen bad people pretend turn good because of religion. Some are just trying hard to be good just because the wanna good to heaven.

While goodness can very well to achieved without religion, we can't deny that certain aspects of religion has helped this cause.

My point on not wanting religion is that all good things achieved by religion can be achieved even without it... But looking at the bad things like its unique extortion, unique hypocrisy, self delusion and denial, pretentious hatred for others (different others), physical and psychological terrorism, fear mongering, and segregation... One can say, it SHOULD GO!!!

But unfortunately it can't because mugus must exist.

I'd like to be part of this discussion, but you seem to be talking about Religion in general terms.

Let's define the term here. What religion specifically are we talking about?

The reason I'm asking this is, some responders are making it sound like it's a Christian thing or maybe Islam too (?).

Apart from these two religions, (I may be wrong) they are no other religions which teaches AfterLife.

I can't speak for all religions, but in Christianity 'Good deeds' does not take anyone to Heaven. Receiving a new Life and Nature which only Christ gives does.

frank317:

Christianity was not intended for people to be Good, it is intended for people to Love and treat their neighbors as they wld want themselves be treated.

It's intended for earth to be an extension of heaven's administration and it shall be in future.

frank317:

The Christian Religion is not hinged primarily on achieving good things. That is a misinformation. Everything is Ours already, so we don't work to archive what we already have.

But, again, After this earth, there's another Life to live, that is what Christianity is abt Primarily. Any Christian who gets distracted from this is misled.

Apst Paul says If all our hope is what we can achieve in this world, then we are of all men most miserable

All of what you mentioned are not Christian traits.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ preaches none of it. None.

If those traits are found in any one inside the Church, it's either the person is a baby Christian, or a Tare pretending to be Wheat.

He that is called of God speaks and does the Word of God

Also don't forget that satan is inside the Church with the intent to plant the seeds which you now see and talk abt. We were told these things will happen, but that does not make Christianity as a Faith/religion what you term it.

I would love to live in a world where we can all discuss what we think is the best way forward and then come to an agreement, without getting into killing rages, no matter how heated we get in the process. If that world contained religion I won't mind because then it would mean convincing people with sound arguments and evidence rather than sentimentality and relying on indoctrination to kick in. Religion is mostly culture and tradition given a veneer of immutability, men need culture and tradition but men don't need immutability.

It seem u quoted me just to teach me what Christianity is all about. I don't know what u expect me to do with that.

Is his tread about what Christianity is all about?

Well, I see one loving his neighbours as himself as a good thing... If this is not a good thing to u, I dont know what being good means to u.

religion has help to inspired man to do Good ,religion is the ultimate source of HOPE , removed religion and the ultimate question will be WHAT DO WE LIVE FOR ? I believe people will do terrible things with or without religion, take a look at the Soviet Union, populated with mostly atheist, even there name seems UNITY but they slaughter there own people. and what about north Korea ? I believed if atheism hold ground just like religion the Human Race will be Long gone by now.

But there are many institutions that operate literally the same way.

E.g: Country.

Would you want this wiped off too?

Country shouldn't be wiped out, but things that doesn't help the countries, should be wiped out. Anything contributing negatively to human lives within a country, a corporation, culture, tribe and race should be wiped out. Religion should be wiped out totally because its negative contribution to the society and to the world at large is far more than its positive contributions these days(this view is subject to my own opinion though).

"Believing" is precisely what should not exist! People can be taught to 'know' instead by diligently checking their beliefs. That is the reason that religion, the teaching of what to believe, has evolved into education, the teaching of how to use one's God given brain to check the validity of one's beliefs.

No, I would not prefer to live in a world without religion.

It is religion that evolved into education and is the foundation of education the world over. Remove the foundation and you'd be building on air and I have not seen that accomplished anywhere.

True, science in fact had it's roots in religion and at some point in human history, religion was same as science.

Systems or institutions built on atheistic footings can be just as oppresive and murdererous as religion i agree.

We can all agree that as humans, we all have great potentials to do great good or evil irrespective of belief or lack thereof.

I only disagree that without religion, what do we live for? Yea, a lot actually, we live for a lot without religion.

A lot of religions teach Afterlife actually, even ancient Egyptian religions is credited with the original idea for judgement after death which Christianity borrowed heavily from when formulating their doctrines.

Even Igbo Traditional Religion also believes and reaches the concept of life after death.

No, science didn't get a new meaning on this thread, the definition of science as used here simply means, study or philosophy about the world/universe.

You're mixing things up.

Science, religion, law, education, etc. all had their roots in philosophy in the traditional sense of it as a field.

I don't have the time and strength to type lengthy posts.

No, i am not. I'm simply saying, Religion and scienxe were once indistinguishable from one another.

There is no need for long write-ups, it is a simple observable historical fact as shown on the examples above; Egyptian, Sumerian or even traditional Igbo religion

take away religion and the ONLY source of knowledge will be science, some how some were, the question will poop out, WHAT DO WE LIVE FOR ? many people seems to ask this question for an objective PURPOSE.
