Historically, democrats votes mostly through mail-in, republicans mostly vote in person.

With the above, it is clear that republican would have wide early lead because in person are counted first.

2016 election was a mistake on the path of democrats.
Democrats were over confident and most didn't really go out and vote. I have friends/ family here in the US that are democrats and didn't vote in 2016 because they were so sure Trump was gonna lose.
