You are also very Wrong. Situate her Grudges in Proper Perspectives,Pls. One Way Driving is an Offence distant from Road Traffic Accident causing Deaths - Man Slaughter. Two Straight Offences...Are d 88 Traffic Offenders involved in Accidents or Fatalities? Pls let us be Reasonable and Humane with Power. Lagos State Needs Money Now for Rehabilitations and Recovery. So why not heavy Fines instead,Pls.

What is this saying... You better no make i swear for you here.... A driver driving one way killed Bayo on 17 of March 2015 and you are here trying so hard to sound intelligent.

In saner climes, they crush the cars not even auction them.

I remember quite well that the penalty was introduced in the Lagos State Traffic Law 2012 and it's been in all Lagos State traffic laws since then. Check section 7.

This is not about your own personal opinion, this is about obeying the law and and playing your part as a responsible member of the society.

Obey the law and they won't impound and auction your car, simple.

Btw, the penalty for driving against the traffic is 3 years in prison so which do you prefer? 3 years in prison or your car?

Its not the severity of the law that creates deterrence, it is the certainty of ths judgement that creates deterrence.

a fundamental principle of law developed countries follow that africa doesnt and you can see the diff in the way both societies operate.

20 cars illegally pass the brt lane but you arrest 8 because those are the ones without level, what message does that send? Be at the level of the 12 above the law cars and you will not be arrested.

@beremx, I totally agree with you

This is what I don't get about the so called Nigerian youths and the lost, destructive, lawless and misguided Sorosoke loudmouths, they lied and spread dangerous fake news and propaganda that destroyed Lagos state, destroyed jobs, destroyed businesses and decimated the IGR base while demanding a better country when in fact they are the most destructive and lawless people in Nigeria.

Now we have lawless mentality youths and hypocrites rioting and demanding a better country, but simple laws and reflections of a better, sane and orderly society they can not obey, abide by or even support.

People don't drive against traffic in sane and orderly societies not only because they know that it's very dangerous and deadly, but also against the law and it comes with serious repercussions.

At bolded, are u serious ?
Re: You Are A Thief - DJ Switch Slams Lagos State Government by naptu2: 11:27pm On Jan 19, 2021
This is my 2019 post on this issue (it incorporates some of my previous posts).

This practice began with the Lagos Traffic Law of 2012.
http://www.nigeria-law.org/Legislation/Laws%20of%20the%20States/Lagos%20State/Lagos%20State%20Road%20Traffic%20Law%202012.pdf

1) Judicial processes: My opposition to the practice stemmed from the fact that the state authorities were auctioning vehicles without going through judicial processes. Vehicles were impounded, the Task Force waited for 2 months and then they auctioned the vehicles. These processes could obviously easily have been abused.

However, after several people went to court and successfully challenged the government’s practice of issuing fines and auctioning vehicles, the government modified the process and now they actually get a court order before auctioning the vehicles.

2) Harshness: Several people (including many Nairalanders) complained that the penalty was way too harsh. “How can you lose your car just because of a traffic offence?” they complained.

The government’s response was that road traffic offences were very serious issues and many people had lost their lives because of them. They said that fines do not work because many people see the fines as no big deal and they even break the law because they know that all they need to do is pay money. They also said that the constant devaluation of the naira ensures that fines are not a good deterrent.

It reminded me of what someone told me about a popular Lagos socialite. This man was very famous/infamous in the early 1990s and he was known for his extravagant displays of wealth. A friend told me that the man was also quite infamous in London too. He said that the man was fond of parking his Rolls Royce in no-parking zones and leaving the fine tucked beneath the windshield wiper.

This famous joke further illustrates the point.

A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank; she has the title, and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $250,000 Rolls as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the blonde returns and repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely; but we are a little puzzled. We checked you out and found that you are a multimillionaire. What puzzles us is – why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The blond replies....."Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?"

It was this same argument that played out in the early 2000s when the government decided that people that violated traffic laws must undergo psychiatric examination at their own expense.

3) Awareness: A lot of people complained that the government is only interested in making a profit from this practice. They say that government often changes the status of roads arbitrarily. For example, Ikoyi Club Road was once a two-way street, but it suddenly became a one-way street and the public was not informed of this change and many people ended up falling into LASTMA’s traps. People also complained that there were no signs to indicate that streets were one-way streets and to indicate the direction that cars should be travelling. They said that, even when there are signs, they are usually put in obscure positions where motorists would not easily see them (for example, a sign was eventually erected on Ikoyi Club Road, but it was erected right behind the branches of a tree, so motorists could not easily see it).

In response to these complaints, the Fashola administration published a list of one-way streets and also promised to erect signs to indicate which streets were one-way streets. This was done initially, but it was not sustained. A Nairalander created a thread so that people could list all the one-way streets in Lagos, as a means of warning people. https://www.nairaland.com/1019021/list-one-way-roads-lagos

Therefore, the justified criticism is that people could lose their vehicles simply because they went the wrong way down a street that they genuinely did not know was a one-way street.

4) Privilege: Some people complained about the people that they believed would be exempt from punishment. They said that bullion vans, danfo buses, personnel of the armed forces and the police and motorcades of government officials would not be punished for driving against the flow of traffic and that these people are the biggest offenders.

However, one of the first vehicles to be apprehended under the law was a bullion van.
Lagos To Auction Seized Bullion Van, Truck
https://www.nairaland.com/1054108/lagos-auction-seized-bullion-van

Danfo buses were also not immune.

Lagos Taskforce Police Impounds 20 Danfo Buses in June
https://allafrica.com/stories/201506291363.html

And Governor Fashola famously arrested military officials that were driving on the BRT lane or driving against the flow of traffic.

The major bone of contention was the motorcades of other state governors and Federal Government officials. The Lagos State Traffic Law 2012 regulates the use of sirens and flashing lights in Lagos and one of the reasons for the inclusion of that section is this horrifying incident between the motorcade of the Imo State governor and a woman and her two little kids on Kingsway Road in Lagos.
https://www.nairaland.com/113341/woman-beaten-up-convoy-front
https://www.nairaland.com/114714/power-drunk-governor-irresponsible-mother
https://www.nairaland.com/136829/indecent-assault-mrs-udoudo-imo

Governor Fashola issued a warning to visiting government officials that they must obey the traffic law, but, of course, this was never enforced.

When you drive against traffic, people die, sadly.

This lawless and thoughtless woman need to explain to families and victims of these dangerous and reckless drivers why they should not be punished and just receive a slap on the wrist instead.
There should be orders and a clearly stated penalty for offences. I think fine or jail term is appropriate, to not make anybody misconstrue government motives.
Demolishing people's properties and auctioning of cars carries the risk of motives being misinterpreted

Cos if this happens and it hits the news, you will be one of the people condemning it, but here you are doing same to your own race and fellow country brethren.. It just goes to show how potentially dangerous and evil you could be without even knowing it and how you wouldn't hesitate to implement a Nazi style action of gassing people when given the opportunity whom you hate for no reasonable reason order than their ethnicity, religion, race or social status been different from yours.. i kinda agree with her because the panacea for headache is not cutting the head off. Selling out cars of defaulters wont solve the problem. Even selling of the car process isn't a transparent one. it will only breed more corruption cos on one side, this officers that impound vehicle will begin racketeering among themselves on the best cars through proxies and profiting. On another side, these defaulters just set unknowing drivers off the right way just to get a hefty happy weekend sir. All these government official are all party members especially lastma, vio, environmental enforcement units, safety official, infact all of them are all members of the ruling party and they abuse the positions they have to extort knowing they can always run to their party leaders to intercede for them, afterall, they rely on them during the elections.

The leaders in government also are not left out, they make the laws and break them cos they are the laws. So are their party leaders. if someone like MC is on the road and he is stuck in traffic, you think he doesn't use one way? who would stop him when the people that going to stop them are their pawns in the party!

Everybody use spy police, tinted glass and all sorts to break the law and you expect the regular citizens to care? them will be like, no be only una sabi this thing. All those commercial buses are largely owned by these union guys, how many of them do they impound? Even government careless about providing the proper infrastructure for them and enforcing such cos they are not the target, its the private citizens but private citizens cant watch commercial drivers behave anyhow and they are not motivated to do same. At the end of the day, sell their cars, monies that citizens don't feel or see the impact!

Government should be practical in their solutions and there are so many solutions to this than selling the car. Even the fines, government needs to be transparent with the process. Government being honest in their corrective system is a good start.

This long essay all because you and that woman think you are above the law other evil drivers killing Lagosians are above the law.

What part of obeying the law you do not understand.

Obey the law and protect the lives of your fellow human beings instead of cars and replaceable material things, you can not replace lives.

The lives of your fellow human beings should be your priority, not lawbreakers and cars.

Your take is shocking. Iran is trying to do well for itself, but it still have laws that majority feel are harsh and inhumane.
Besides, I am a lagosian, and the government is supposed to serve me. A society should be built on fair and humane laws not one that is arbitrary.
Laws should be enacted and executed in a way that they apply consistently in every case. This is one way a society becomes civil. Morever, it takes a polished and civilized mind to fully grasp this things.
Laws that are arbitrary only spurn and enhance totalitarian regimes. Like how Thailand had sentenced somebody to 43years for sharing a podcast that is thought to be insulting to the monarchy, like Iran jailing somebody for ten + years for posting videos where she used make up and editing to turn herself to a scary character, like Saudi attesting and jailing women for driving etc. This laws are rediculous

I want to believe you can read well, grasp perspective and comprehend things. I haven't said there should be no penalty for offences, in fact I believe that a lawless society is a chaotic society.
But, laws should be fair logical. In fact, jail term could be more painful than the car auctioning but it is also more rationale.
What's the logic behind auctioning of the cars. It's the person and the persons family's property
Let me list the penalties a civil and progressive society can give to such offenders: first time offenders=fine. Repeat offender=suspension of driving license. Second repeat offender=jail term
