hayor2014: Please house, I intend to build a poultry house , layers in battery cages, that will take at least 4000 birds, what is the size that the poultry house should be at that capacity.. thanks all

If you are starting with 4000 POL, then you will build a chicken pen housing the battery cages only.No provisions for brooding and rearing sections which apply to day old chickens set up.If u are starting with 4000 Point of Lay(POL),and u are using the battery cage that can carry 90 chickens, that means you will acquire about 45 battery cages. To get the size of the chicken pen that will accommodate 45 battery cages, you have to get the dimensions of the battery cage that you are going to use.

2nd,you have to determine the arrangement of the battery cages in rows i.e how many cages will be in a row.

3rd,that will determine whether the land space you have is sizable enough for the chicken pen to be constructed. I suggest you adopt the flushing system and you have to get the dimensions of the flushing system to be incorporated in the design of the poultry house. Then the spacing between the battery cages and the spacing between the rows also have to be considered in the design. The figures we come up with will determine the overall size of the poultry house in terms of length, width and height.

The Shootist:

So at what price do the local restaurants and eateries pay per kilogram. And do they buy whole dressed chicken or is it some parts alone, probably just thighs and wings, in which case to whom do u sell other parts. Im interested and working on this. Processors' pricing is ridiculous.

Cc Fnk and other off-season broiler enthusiasts.

The broiler business is somewhat delicate based on seasons but is good business if you can locate the market first.
The broiler consumes feed at higher rates than the layer chicken.
The broiler can be sold at 7 weeks old or at 12 - 14 weeks old.
Many farmers rear broilers seasonally targeting festive seasons like Christmas when they can get the good prices and clean, neat profits.During Christmas, many lose their senses and make purchase based on impulse and emotions and that is good for the broiler farmer selling during Xmas.
If you rear broilers in an off season, and you do not understand what i call 'short cut' feeding system, and you feed them with commercial feeds only, you may make a loss. With the 'short cut',you spend much less on feeding and produce heavy broilers that attract better prices.
One of my blog readers sold his live broilers recently at 7 weeks for N1000.00 each in Akwa Ibom State. There is a thriving broiler market but you should locate the market first before you start production.

I'm curious, what is this "short cut" feeding system you're trying to market here. You are either another internet farmer or you give us proof here of this magic feeding system you have that will give you fantastic results. You only end up confusing new farmers or already practicing but inexperienced ones and I Dont know what you intend to do by achieving that( maybe to sell the information on the 'short cut system'). If you're sincere enough then post it here and Dont just come here and mention 'short cut', and scramble off to leave the inexperienced farmers running after you for the info.

I'm a practicing farmer who specialise in broilers and until proven wrong by any 'magic feeding system' I'll just like to let prospective farmers here know that you get good results based on buying good doc, and good management practices, as regards feeding you either use commercial feed or mill your feed, but in whichever case your birds will consume the required amount of feed to reach market weight, there's no short cut. That's what I do and I get my results in 6 weeks, no laziness or procrastination in farming, good management practices and quality doc will get you there, also see the table below for a breakdown of what you expect your birds to consume and the expected outcome

Feed consumption
Age ( weekly per bird) Live body weight (wks). Type of feed kg lb. kg lb.
1. Chicken starter. 0.13 0.29 0.15. 0.33
2 Chicken starter. 0.28 0.62. 0.36. 0.79

If you're rearing 500 broilers then your feeding cost calculations will be as follows:
Week 1: 0.13×500= 65kg(2.6 bags) and their expected weight at the end of the week is 0.15kg
Week 2: 0.28×500= 140kg(5.6 bags) and their expected weight at the end of the week is 0.36kg
Week 3: 0.47×500=235kg(9.4 bags) and their expected weight at the end of the week is 0.65kg
Week 4: 0.67×500= 335kg(13.4bags) and their expected weight at the end of the week is 1.03kg

and so on till the desired number of weeks.

Thanks

Bro, just ignore that part that said 'broiler grower', use 'broiler finisher' instead, I guess it obtains in the part of the world where the author of the article where I copied it, hails from. Here in Nigeria, I haven't seen anything like 'broiler grower', only broiler starter and broiler finisher.

Thanks

pls bro, like how many bags of starter and finisher do i need for 50 broilers from wk1-wk4 and wk5-wk12.PLS i will be glad to here ur response, thanks

Expect to feed them with about 3 bags of broiler starter till week 4, then feed them with about 9 bags of broiler finisher till week eight, your birds should be of market weight by then and you should sell, else they start eating into your profit.

Thanks

Thanks so much, people like you are uncommon. You are just like people like Robonski, Excelsiorfarm, Ab1x, Togunwa etc on ''hidden truth about catfish business'' thread on this forum. May God reward and enlarge you for given this info free of charge without referring to any blog or manual for sale. You can take a look at the mentioned thread, and if this thread can be dishing out free info like the mentioned thread, cool cash await the sincere farmers.

Thanks bro

@tucurj, I hope you understand how @valarinz got you the info about your 50 birds capacity. Just take a look at his table or the explanation he gave above, and substitute the 500 bird capacity to your 50 bird capacity and you will get the numbers he gave you. remember the bags of feeds are packed in 25kg bags, so you divide to total kg you got when you add up the first 4 weeks kg feed consumption by 25kg, that will give you the number of bags that you will need for each feed type at the different stages of the birds to their market size or desired size.

Understanding this will help you increase or decrease the number of birds and still know what number of bags of feeds that you will need.

Hope this helps.
