just go 4 farm support as it gave me virtually no probs and mortality was close 2 0%. Buh a friend of mine is doing zartech and it is ok too just dat he said they are prone 2 sanmonella and newcastle disease. He gives lasota monthly 2 his birds.

Thanks so much, really appreciated. I will need detail address of farm support and probably their contact number(s). But do you say mortality 20% or 2%?

good morning my people.

its unfortunate we lost some posts.I had posted earlier the challenge we expreienced in our farm. thank God the birds have recovered, they are not dying again but the production is yet to hit the height we attained before.

am grateful to God for bringing us back on track. its not easy watching your birds die everyday. presently they are doing around 76% and we are praying for them to reach 90%(that was the production before the disaster)

thank you guys for your support.

like i always say, this business(hobby) requires PASSION,PASSION & PASSION. lets keep the flag flying. i look forward to having 10k+ birds in my farm.

Farmers in the house I want to know the cost of raising 170 broiler for 3months before I finally sell them off. The materials I will need and the space required. And how much will I get to sell each birds for Christmas after the allotted 3 months? Before I forget I will need the cost outline too. Tnks

There are 62 pages on this thread, all your questions have been answered there. So, do your due diligence and go through the pages, you will learn more than just having someone here give you a line answer to your question. (between page 60-62) you will see the break down on some of the cost you seek for.

My two cents!

Hi everyone!
I was opportuned to read through the posts on this thread before the "holocaust" and that was the booster I needed for the already fading dream I had. I had always loved to go in the line of poultry.

After seeking God's guidiance as a muslim, I set out on the journey.

In March, I got a 4.5hectares of land at Ibadan. It was about 1.4m. The clearing was done and deforestation completed on time. I was opportuned to have a well already dug on d site. Also, there was a dilapidated structure.
I renovated the structure and erected a tank stanchion with pumping maching installed in the well. A fellow Nairalander (met on this thread) was instrumental to kick-starting. Farmtemple (bolaji) is a great guy. He was around while I was in far away Ikot Abasi (akwa ibom state).
The water was running and the house served as a temporary storage house.
I am an architect, so I did an overall layout design of how the place will be in years to come, in shaa Allaah.

I scooped sand on site and moulded my blocks, cured to d required strenght.

I procured wood , used asbestos and other necessary materials. Construction commenced.
Because of my absence , the work wasnt completef as scheduled. It took nearly more than 2months to achieve. Understandably though, the farm is not also d best in terms of accessibility. It slowed down d pace of work.

Fast forward to May, I dug another borehole (I wanted to place safe with d water requirements).

I was more than eager to get my birds but I had a friend who was keenly regulating my zeal so as not to do things too much in a hurry. He kept telling me...."be calm, there is still more to be done". He was very right.

Now, I was on ground and despite my proactiveness, we were busy preparing for arrival of the birds for more than a month.
I booked for 4, 200 layers and 200 cockerel. It was from CHI. We were alloted to pick up on June 16, 2014.

I couldnt sleep overnite due to anxiety. Eventually the birds were transported to d farm.

As I write, they are exactly 4 weeks old today. So far, we have mortality of 24nos. That was mainly due to d mistake we made at the point of sorting the birds at CHI.
I took time to sort out the weak ones into a cartorn meant to be replaced. However, the same carton to be replaced was taken inside the hatchery and returned back to us.

Some of the mortality were noticed dt same day as d vet doctor was trying to vaccinate them.

Alhamdulilahi, they are doing fine.
I will send some pics.

Right now, hopefully in a week's time the Feed mill should be up on running with a 1 ton milling machine a 40kva generator.

Please dont ask me how much as been invested so far.....a lot......lo.l

Congrats. More success to you. Hope to start mine very soon too. Are you going into layers production only or you are combining it with broilers considering the large expanse of land that you bought.

Please kindly share more insight so that we can learn more from you.
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by PENMIGHT(m): 11:58pm On Jul 14, 2014
Wish u success too. Please keep the torch burning and never allow your passion to fade away.

I have a big dream for the expanse of land I ve gotten. Also, I am in talk with the locals whether there are cheap lands around that can still be annexed to this one.
The plan involves having a cold room where processed chicken after de-feathering can be stored for sale. This is where the broilers come in. Given the fact dt broiler are very prones to CRD disease from upward of 6 to 8 weeks, I wouldn't advise anyone to mix them up in pens with close proximities. For this reason, this land will be dedicated solely to layers.

Also, broilers are best reared if u already have a dedicated demand for It. Otherwise, seasonal or festive demand is not a sufficient reason for me to venture into it.

So I advise u bro, please focus on layers and achieve near perfection in everything pertaining to this specialisation.

You may find it hard to believe but virtually all d steps have taken so far were well thought out and I did most to near flawless. I spent more dn 2m on the building of d pen alone. Someone could ve spent lower but definitely not d same standard.

Most poultry dont bother fencing there areas cos of the expanse of land, i did fencing with barbed wires and Dongoyaro tree branches at the perimeter. The trees will grow to form a good wind breaker and landscape for the farm in later years. That alone cost around 250k.

Total stumping of the area cost around 150k. I am planing on mixed plantations of soybeans and corn so dt I can harvest and use as feed eventually.

I have 2 nos generator sets and the third one is d 40kva. The gen are natural nocturnal problem giver. It is in d nite they will show thier true colours. U need substitutes at hand so as not to jeopardize the required lighting for ur birds.

I also bought a second-hand freezer to keep the vacine at good temperature.
But the summary of all these is dt if ur capacity will only take 100 birds , prepare d best provisions for them and then rely on your Creator to crown your human strivings, for ONLY Him grant succes to whom He wishes. May He grant you and i success in our endeavours.

Wow. I'm so impressed with your dreams and aspirations for your farm and I pray God Almighty give you the strength and wisdom to achieve them.

It is because of this reasons that I visit Nairaland's Agriculture section so as to be inspired to act very fast on realizing my dreams of owing my farm too.

Agriculture (most especially poultry) has been a childhood dream for me. I raised some chickens when I was in school just to test ground and I'm willing to go commercial.
I want to combine layers and broilers production together, don't know if this is a good idea though.

My main problem is getting cheap land in my environment (Ilorin) and also I don't know how many acres of land will be ideal for this venture.

I will follow you and I hope to learn more from you.

Confusion normally preceeds conviction and most successful people have once experienced sleeplessness like this. Prosperity is close to a man who learns from the strenght and weaknesses of others. So, normally u should succed where i have faltered. Such is life!

There is a secret that must be told. No amount of land is sufficient for a farmer. You can only start somewhere. Here is a fact:

Most sizeable pen will almost occupy a whole plot of land. I am an architect and this is gospel.
So if u plan to start with a pen of about 3000 to 4000 in cage eventually, u need at least 2 plots of land. A plot for pen and other services squeezed into the other. However, the bigger the better.

I dont know of Ilorin o, but I am sure u will do better leaving the city for the bush or outskirt if u are prepared for this journey.
I am a native of Ibadan but I reside in Abuja with my family. Infact, I am writing from abuja ,however, i believed in doing the best and i moved to ibadan. Not even the core, but d outskirt of Ibadan. Ibadan is the center of Poultry biz in the whole of southwest.

So bro, if u must stay in Ilorin , find a place where building dev will not reach in about 5 years minimum.

This is important so that the resident will not frustrate u into untimely relocation. Protect and insure ur investment.....head for the bush, plsssss.

Passion without adequate knowledge in poultry business will take you to no where no matter how much you spend.Experience counts in handling poultry business. And don't put all your eggs in one basket if you do you may develop high blood pressure except if you have financial backings elsewhere.its good when you have the money and stock 1000 if you are able to sell all your eggs and you have more demand you go to 2000 then you must have studied diseases prevention, market situation, biosecurity, waste handling etc .Then if you have large market for your eggs or chicken you project and expand. Then passion, experience, knowledge will keep you moving at high pace. You must give room for downtime it will surely come.downtime such as mortality and drop in sales and the stress .

My advice to farmers to be.Its fun but thread it gently.its easier said than done.but the reward is always there.
All the best

You are spending so much money in starting out, I agree with your friend. Please go easy with the infrastructure, at least for the start up phase. Abi you be politician?

Is there any reason you use this kind of roofing for the pen?
Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by PENMIGHT(m): 4:59pm On Jul 15, 2014
You may be right about the depth of my expenditure at this phase but one thing that is certain is that they are once-in-a-lifetime spending. I am , and will still be, more watchful though. Thanks for the advise.

I am not a politician, i am an architect.

The roof u noticed is asbestors. I bought fairly used ones. Asbestors allows reduced heat into the pen. This is better for the birds than zinc or alumnium roof.

The way the roof is done also allow ease of hot air dissipation from d pen.

More grease to your elbow my friend, but you better develop some very strong heart and a lot of cash reserves for when the dark days will come calling, cos they will definitely come no matter how careful you are, its the reality of the game, its how strong you come out of it that matters, and you know they say the higher you climb the harder your fall.

Thanks
