Some Nigerians who make use of Android phones and Java operating devices have taken to social media to protest against what they call ‘exorbitant’ cost of Internet subscription being charged by telecoms firms. Also part of the protest are those who use smart devices such as i-Phone and Windows phone. They alleged that they are not getting value on their subscription plans, compared to users of BlackBerry phones in terms of data allowance and prices. The users who besieged various social networking sites urged the Nigerian Communications Commission to prevail on telecoms firms to address the issue, so that they can begin to enjoy same benefits BlackBerry users enjoy on their platforms. To register their displeasure, some subscribers have launched an online petition on change.org. The petition is titled “Telecoms Service Provider in Nigeria: All Data Users Demand Fairness.’’ The petition, which has attracted 40 signatures, reads, “The Nigerian youths are crying out loud. We need a better data plan for Internet access on our smartphones. The present data plans are too expensive compared to the bandwidth.’’ The petitioners have also tweeted their complaints to the handles of the various telecoms firms as well as the NCC. The hashtag #AllDataUsersDemandsFairness has also been employed by the subscribers to register their protest on the social network. Writing on the Facebook wall of the NCC, one Ugochukwu Samuel argues that the situation where he gets between 200 and 350 megabytes for N1,000, while those on Blackberry get between 1 and 3 gigabyte for N1,000, is “unfair.’’ He states, “As a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I wish to express my right by urging the Nigerian Communications Commission to see to the review of the data cap attached to the subscription of data on smart phones such as Android, IOS and Windows by our network providers. “I demand a fair data plan. In comparison to the Blackberry plan, which is considered slightly affordable, subscribers on Android get between 200 and 350MB for N1,000 while those on Blackberry get between 1 and 3GB for N1,000. “We wish that prices for data are made more affordable for Nigerian youths who rely on the Internet for resources which are not easily available within our society. In solidarity with other youths fighting for this cause, we shall continue to lament and express our desires until we get a positive intervention.” Also reacting on Facebook, one Musa Rasheed writes, “We need a fair data plan for Android devices. These telecoms firms are charging just too much for nothing. Paying N1,000 for just 260MB worth of data is unfair. Other countries get better deals. NCC, please come to our aid. We’ve suffered too much in silence. Now we are tired.’’ A member of the online forum, nairaland.com, with the name, My Hobbies, urged telecoms firms to provide them with a similar package BlackBerry that users enjoy on their platforms, which allow them to get a fair value for their money. “Android phone users are not happy with what our local telecoms firms are doing to us. We the Android phone users should be given a special package like that of BlackBerry plans. The current system, where they make us subscribe to MB worth of N1,000 and above, and they give us between 200MB, and 250MB is not fair at all. We all know how Android can drain megabytes. NCC, please, do something,’’ he adds. When our correspondent contacted the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo, he said there was nothing the agency could do about it, because it was not a regulatory issue. He said, “We (NCC) don’t regulate technology. BlackBerry is a peculiar service different from other platforms. NCC doesn’t provide Internet services and the enquiry is not a regulatory issue.’’ |

Elai147: After the downturn of 2008, banking sector is the only sector that is recovering at a very slow rate. The reason for this is not very clear to me. Inasmuch as this may be the right time for those who have money to buy from this sector, one should trade with caution. To reduce risk, I have decided to venture this sector by adding to my holdings in very sound banking stocks ONLY. I am not ready to make silly mistakes of the past. And that increase will come from Oando cos others don fly-away! |

Seun: If your bank deducts the full face value of the tbill upfront, as it seems to be the case with the people complaining, then the upfront interest is very important. If the interest is delayed for one month, as they reported, that represents one month of lost interest that they would have gained if they reinvested the amount elsewhere. The fact that your bank conducts transactions with integrity does not in any way eliminate the possibility that some other banks cheat their customers by deducting the full face value of tbills purchased and delaying the payment of the interest/discount for a month or two while they earn interest on it.Gbam...... Any bank that is involved in this should be reported to appropriate quarters or even be sued!!! |

Nigerian federal legislators with a basic salary of $189, 500 per annum (N30.6 million) are the highest paid in the world, according to data from the UK based Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, the IMF and the Economist. The legislator’s basic salary (which excludes allowances) is 116 times Nigeria’s GDP per person of $1,600, and is 52 percent higher than what Kenyan legislators, who are the second highest paid legislators, earn as a percentage of GDP per capita. In absolute terms, Nigerian legislators only earn less than their Australian counterparts who make $201,000 per annum, or about 3.5 times the salary of the average Australian. The ranking also shows that four out of five of the highest paid legislators in the world are African legislators, with the top five being Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Indonesia and South Africa. The high legislator pay has been causing a lot of outcry in some countries, as citizens protest the huge pay discrepancy between legislators and average citizens. An independent body’s suggestion that British lawmakers’ salaries should rise from £66,396 ($105,400) to £74,000 in 2015 has prompted a media firestorm, while furious Kenyan demonstrators burned 221 coffins outside parliament in a row over the pay and benefits awarded to Kenyan MPs. In Nigeria, the huge legislator pay is compounded by a lethargic approach to lawmaking that has seen the lawmakers passing less than 10 percent of bills before them, since the inauguration of the 7th Assembly (2011-2015) on June 6, 2011. BusinessDay also reported last week that the National Assembly, which is facing a backlog of unfinished business and increasing public disapproval, has spent N5.2 billion on average to pass a bill in the past two years. The National Assembly, which comprises the Senate and House of Representatives, has passed 69 bills out of a total of 725 bills in various stages of progress before it, according to BusinessDay’s analysis of the bill progression chart of both houses, gotten from the Assembly’s website. Meanwhile, 73 percent of people in Nigeria think that the parliament is affected by corruption, data from Transparency International’s (TI) most recent global corruption barometer shows. Ninety-four percent of respondents in the same TI survey said Nigerian political parties are affected by corruption. The Nigerian legislature had a budget of N232.7 billion for 2011, N150 billion for 2012, and N150 billion for 2013. The prorated cost of running the 7th National Assembly since its inauguration in 2011 till date, amounts to N360.74 billion ($2.2 billion). A major piece of legislation left undone by the legislators includes the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), which aims to unify all the necessary legislations in one bill and provide a clear framework for investment in the energy sector. “The slow pace of progress on key legislation is a concern for investors,” said Razia Khan, regional head of research, Africa, at Standard Chartered Bank, in response to BusinessDay questions. The PIB, which may help improve job creation and revenues for the government at all levels (federal, state and local governments) and in theory, better the lives of the 70 percent of Nigerians who live below the poverty line, has been stuck in parliament for over four years. This has led to loss or deferred investment of at least $28 billion in Nigeria’s oil sector since 2010, according to ExxonMobil’s Nigerian producing unit, with the beneficiaries being other producers in the sub-region, such as Angola and Ghana. The National Assembly budget for 2013 is also equivalent to 9.2 percent of the Federal Government’s 2013 capital expenditure budget of N1.6 trillion. The cost of running the National Assembly has serially been named as one of the highest in the world. The upper and lower houses of Nigeria consist of a 109-member Senate and the 360-member House of Representatives. “Many citizens cannot fathom why the legislators are paid so much money to do so little,” said one analyst, to BusinessDay.
