mfm04622: WzIn what way or how were the Zimbabwean farmers hounded? Who hounded them, given that Abdulfatah Ahmed was installed by Saraki and did not do anything Saraki did not want? Give example please.
Maybe you need to do more research about why they left. What I heard was there was no market for what they were producing (No market for fresh milk, no off taker for fresh milk) and no infrastructure in place to support export.
If local farmer were given supports Saraki gave the foreigners, don't you think the ventures would have been more successful?
If truly Dangote was interested in outgrower scheme for sugarcane, they don't need to lease the land! Do you hear if any issue with Tomato Jos that is doing tomato outgrower scheme in Kaduna? Saraki leased them land under the Land Use Act... Same as would be done for any other commercial agricultural investment (domestic or foreign) in Nigeria. They took bank loans (banks now own 75% of the holding company) for housing, developing the land, importing livestock and machinery, etc. Meanwhile, any similarly-placed Nigerian farmer could easily access the facilities of NISRAL, Bank of Agriculture and the Agric Insurance Scheme. > |

Is Kaduna in Niger State? What has Kaduna got to this with this particular land dispute? Do you hear of any issue with Dangote Tomato Paste that is doing outgrower scheme in Kano? The fact this is the only site out of the FOUR Dangote Sugar sites means the issue is PECULIAR to this site. Meanwhile, while admittedly I cannot claim to have all of the intimate details of the Zimbabwean farmers debacle, the core of their business remains active and viable in Kwara State, and is in fact the state’s biggest and most visible agricultural venture. Nonetheless, the parts of the initial land grant that was reportedly taken back from them, is currently underutilized and mostly fallow (I guess the political farmers are gone). > |

mfm04622: You really don't know what is going on!
If you separate the rural farmer from his land, you have created poverty in that community. You have changed people who are self employed and we'll to do to unemployed people that need handouts! For example, you pay 100k compensation for the land, in a year, the 100kbis finished. The man instead of farming his land will become a labourer earning minimum wages that can't take care of him and his family. Or he has to leave the village to hustle in town and cities. Whatever the case, you have made him poor! That land he was paid 100k for will normally make him 300k if not more in a year. So when wise communities say no to such investments, be happy for them. There are many hectares of land that is not occupied, investors should go there and not divest farmers from their lands The land was not purchased, but leased under the Land Use Act. Most important, this is an OUT-GROWER venture and accordingly the local farmers would continue to hold and cultivate the land and grow the cane, but would be assured of a guaranteed OFF-TAKER in Dangote Sugar. Conversely, what’s the point in farmers cultivating products that they cannot be sure of selling or which they would struggle to reliably get to market given poor logistics and infrastructure in Nigeria (and hence why as much as 60% of harvests are lost). Furthermore, Dangote companies often build roads, schools, clinics, roads, and provide electricity for the communities that they are located in (eg, Obajana, Gboko, Ibeshe, etc.). Even if you could argue that the farmers don’t need schools, their kids would need it as the world (and agriculture) evolves beyond subsistence farming and livelihood, and their families would definitely benefit from ante-natal and other medical services. The reality of course (if we are being honest with ourselves) is that these sorts of protests and disputes are rarely (if ever) led by the poor rural farmers themselves, but almost always by self-interested “leaders” who are often amenable to financial inducement. Frankly glad that the company called their bluff and is moving on (as you rightly noted, there are several other potentially suitable sites for sugar cultivation in Nigeria). This is pretty much reminiscent of what happened in Kwara State, where after the resettled Zimbabwean farmers were effectively chased and hounded out, the ‘disputed’ land has since lain mostly fallow and unused or underutilized. > |

This is a pure private sector hospital that was built from scratch by a PE firm called Abraaj (with investments from IFC, CDC, Proparco, etc) before they went under and the investment was given to another PE firm called TPG to manage. There was no equity contribution from Lagos State. None at all. Other than licensing and accreditation which the investors paid for.
It is a 165 bed state of the art hospital in Lagos. Only a foolish governor will decline the opportunity to be part of the opening that comes with ‘visibility’ that politicians crave. I see the reference to Dr. Hammond was quickly removed after you found you goofed... Lazyyouth4u: Let me explain quickly..
Dr Hammond was trying to build something there a long time ago but couldn’t raise enough money from banks so it was abandoned as an incomplete building. It was later taken over by the PE investor, Abraaj (on behalf of Evercare Health Fund) who appointed the Indian contractor, Sharpooji Pallonji, to come and build that hospital. Abraaj later went under and another international Private Equity investor, TPG took over the management of the fund.
So Dr Hammond has absolutely nothing to do with this Evercare Hospital. Nope! Abraaj did NOT take over Dr. Hammond’s project “on behalf Evercare Heslth Fund”. Abraaj’s Global Healthcare Fund was RENAMED Evercare Health Fund only after it was taken over by TPG and others in 2019. > |

If you now built something different in such locations, it would be pulled down. Where Evercre Hospital facility is located today was never a designated hospital place. You see that road mark only after the hospital has been fully completed and not before and during construction. The road mark is there to create awareness, just like saying pure water sold here, school children crossing, etc Nope, they are NOT.... The term “designate” does NOT have a unitary meaning. Eriokanmi: It's not a designated hospital zone. There was an occupant there before and a GT bank. The GT Bank is still there, sharing a fence with the hospital. The C of O you said didn't come for free. They paid for every registration done to acquire the place. They're also going to pay for signage and advert on the notice board. I don't see where the governor has impacted the huge Healthcare investment positively. Anyone else could have been invited for commissioning including the health minister. Not a big deal at all. Had the government donated a parcel of land to them, built a power plant or contributed in a way to ease doing business or creating an enabling environment, then it would have been a different thing. Meanwhile, unless you were personally privy to the development, you cannot say what the government may have done (or not done) to facilitate the development of this hospital, but this project used to be Dr, Cecil Hammond’s Hospital, which received very visible governmental support when it was first initiated. Nonetheless, governmental support does not have to be particular. Rather it suffices that government creates an enabling environment within which different businesses and investors thrive. Support is not always in Naira and kobo. And yes, anyone could have been invited to commission the hospital, but it was the Governor who was specifically invited. Similarly, the Governor could have easily declined or sent a representative but showing up is a very visible show of high-level state support for this sort of investment. > |
