musicwriter: You're the one talking about individuals and that's why you don't understand the larger picture of the era Nkrumah and Azikiwe were born. But I am speaking about that era.
Nkrumah and Azikiwe were born when power was shifting from African autonomy to European domination.
Despite how long Europeans arrived Africa but power began to shift from Africans to Europeans only between 1880 to 1935- according to African historians. That's the era Nkrumah and Azikiwe were born, in fact, they may have fought the colonial wars against Europeans in their youthful 20's or at least knew those who did and either lived to tell the story or died. Seeing that as boys was the root of their inspiration to later kick out white people out of Africa.
I've given you a book, indeed, titled after that. Repeating a lie over-and-over again does not make it true…smh Nkrumah and Azikiwe were born a FULL GENERATION after colonial European domination.A thesis is USELESS if it is inapplicable to real-life… You floated a theory that failed when tested against SPECIFIC real-life circumstances. Learn and move on. > |

casualobserver: you clearly dont understand politics. In politics your strength as a leader is derived from the people you lead. Just like in Ambode's case, when the people say they dont want, they dont want and if you go against them they will take you out eventually.
i dont understand kano political intrigues, but all over twitter yesterday, it was clear that the Kano politicians did not want her. Only ONE person effectively determined Ambode’s fate… Any notion he was a victim of a popular disenchantment is crass sophistry. > |

pendragonbladgo: Some here just talk any how....
In Nigeria, since we are not whites, is it normal for a woman of 44years to be single? She can't live with a Man. Our Black tradition and religion enjoys women to be married!
Shetty is not fit! She can't run a family so she can't run a nation. Nigeria is not a joke at the moment, it's a real business. Jonathan did such mistake, bringing prostitutes into government... And they ended up using government matters to entertain themselves and friends
We want women like Dora and Ajiya Bunkure adanny01: She is unmarried and never married.
Imagine, Muslim men having a political meeting with an unmarried girl at 2am. Imagine the thoughts of the men who see her as fair game. Even the thought is a sin so many of them would not like such a meeting.
Imagine a governor having a private political meeting with her in her house. The public will think otherwise.
A lot of such sceneries won't sit well with a lot of dedicated and even nondedicated Muslims. Here comes BARBARIC MISOGYNISTS knuckles dragging as they crawl out from the Dark Ages….smh> |

musicwriter: In history, 1861 and 1888 are the same time period. I already told you that dates aren't sacrosanct as long as you have a good guess, which is why historians use ca or circa to say within or about. You can even give or take out one thousand years depending on the time reference. Astrophysicists can give or take away one million years depending, again, on the timeframe being considered!!
On your last paragraph, such insult is unnecessary. I am not a pushover on this topic but here's Nairaland where you're free to deride anybody.
Books of wars against colonialism are out there for you to get more perspectives. One popular one is called Africa under colonial domination 1880-1935. Historians put a timeline on it!! If you read the book, you'll learn about many (not popular) freedom fighters whom Nkrumah and Azikiwe rode on their wings. I am providing SPECIFIC events with SPECIFIC dates, and you going on about nebulous (and ever-shifting) “periods”… The SPECIFIC Pan-Africanist individuals we’ve discussed were born on SPECIFIC dates and not over never-ending “time periods”. We have enough SPECIFIC information to test your thesis, and it’s come up short over and over again… Meanwhile, if saying there’s no point going back-and-forth with someone who’s already made up his mind is an “insult”, so be it. Again, best of luck with your article… Hopefully, when you publish it and others non-NLers critique it, you will not blow a gasket. Learning is a LIFE-LONG enterprise. > |

musicwriter: All the years you call "formal" or "formally" fall within 1888, which I indeed previously said is when African historians put the beginning of colonialism. So, even though from your perspectives colonialism was already in full force but the fact is that some African nations still had some control just about the time Nkrumah and Azikiwe were born.
Colonialism spread over time. All parts of Africa weren't colonized beginning same day no matter how Europeans tried. Power was lost gradually not overnight, in fact, some nations like Ethiopia, Lesotho, etc maintained some sort of independence even after others fall.
Yes, there's the problem of ethnocentricity today and that's as a result of lack of knowledge of history. History which should be prioritized in African schools is not. But that's a different discussion. How does the Lagos Treaty of Cessation (signed between the British and Oba Dosumnu) in 1861, 27 years (or a GENERATION) earlier, “fall within 1888”?! And even if we use your “historians’” 1888 timeline, the fact that some of the most virulent and famous Pan-Africanists were born almost a generation thereafter still defeats the thesis that Africans born during colonial rule automatically lost their sense of self. Anyway, no point in belaboring the discourse since (despite glaring examples to the contrary) you’re obstinately sticking to your thesis. With all due respect, that’s hardly the temperament one would expect of a real scholar or thinker, but best of luck with the article. Cheers. > |

Apart from Nigeria and probably Benin Rep… All of Niger’s neighbors (Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Algeria, Libya) will support the government and trade with them. As for the cattle they supply to the North… They will simply transship it through Chad, and greedy Nigerians will bring it in - just as with other smuggled goods. Al Nassr came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Zamalek and thus have qualified for the Arab Club Champions Cup knockout stages. Zizo scored from the spot to give the Egyptian club the lead, but it was Cristiano Ronaldo in rescue for Al Nassr who scored an 87th-minute equalizer.

musicwriter: They were there and witnessed the transition to dependency. You'll understand it once you realize that there was a period of transition from slavery to colonialism. Problem is that you're using dates as if they're sacrosanct but historians don't use dates that way.
Again, the people that set us free (many we don't even know their names) were born within that period. Nkrumah and Azikiwe would have been born just 10-15 years after African societies lost power, so they lived the impact of colonialism firsthand from beginning to the end themselves.
Colonialism didn't begin overnight. It took many years of colonial wars, some still going on till the 1930's and even later. Who said it did… European influence which evolved into formal colonial rule started centuries aprior. For example, first official British contact with Lagos was about 1759… But Lagos became a FORMAL protectorate (by Treaty) over a century later in 1861. Similarly with the area that became Ghana… Which was controlled by the Dutch from 1598, but became FORMALLY British in 1874. One suspects your so-called “historians” are taking their cue from the Berlin Conference… But real historians would’ve known that for the most part Berlin merely recognized already existing colonies. In fact, if one was to start counting from when African societies informally started losing indigenous control… Their grandfathers (frankly even great great grandfathers, given the then much shorter lifespan) were NOT yet born. Nnamdi Azikiwe was born in 1904, 43 years (ie, more than a GENERATION) after formal British control… Kwame Nkrumah was born in 1909, 35 years (also, more than a GENERATION) after formal UK control of Ghana.Accordingly, it’s safe to debunk the thesis that Africans born during colonialism were/are somehow rudderless… Nelson Mandela was born over a century post-colonialism, as were those who liberated Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, etc. Abegi, let’s dispense with seemingly easy store-front explanations for our current issues… Even just going by Nairaland (or Twitter), our generation seems MORE ETHNOCENTRIC than those born during colonialism.Cheers! > |

By the way, African historians put colonialism as beginning somewhere from 1888. I see you subsequently ADDED the highlighted… Don’t which “historians” you’ve been reading but Lagos became a British Protectorate in 1861 (and formally a colony in 1862)… Meanwhile, the Dutch had controlled the area from 1598-1872 before formally ceding it to the UK, whose rule officially started in 1874. > |
