itiswellandwell:
The aim of BRT has been forfeited in some areas. Thought BRT was to bring about fair charges lesser than that of other commercial buses. The case isn't like that anymore as BRT is even costlier compared to other commercial buses in some areas. A place like oshodi, have seen this happen many times. Heard some BRT buses are now handled by individuals. No be like this we suppose dey go naaw.
Nope. The primary aim of BRT is to use a dedicated lane (in the absence of rail mass transit) to move large amounts of people quicker and comfortably, and therefore encourage people to leave their cars at home. Furthermore, the BRT is operated by PRIVATE concessionaires (who are responsible for purchasing air-conditioned wheelchair-accessible buses with Fred WiFi), as our governments have a horrible track record of operating buses or in fact most businesses.

BRT fares are however regulated by LAMATA to ensure they are reasonable and justifiable, and that the consumers are not gouged.

Nonetheless, the Otedola Foundation gives HUNDREDS OF SCHOLARSHIPS every year, has built and donated a College of Education and recently donated an engineering faculty building to Augustine University, among others. Nonetheless, instead of expending energy pontificating to others how they should spend their money perhaps you need to redirect that energy and righteousness towards educating your “Les Privileged” (sic) and “the Poor” to keep it in their pants or to pull out. Nonetheless, rich people don’t really have to do anything extra apart from paying their taxes (most of them already employ HUNDREDS of fellow Nigerian citizens in their businesses and thus directly and indirectly create livelihoods and wealth for THOUSANDS, allowing them to feed their families and educate their children), but in Nigeria everyone (especially those who will have 10-20 children even though they can hardly feed themselves) believe that other people owe them a living. PoliticsRe: If You Don't Distribute Electric Power, We'll Seize Your Licence - Sowore by 9jaRealist: 4:01am On Jan 25, 2019
Mayflowa:
I am not canvassing for Sowore. To be candid, there is a lot of electricity generated in this country that are not distributed. The Generating companies (GENCOS) are different from transmission company. And they are also different from distribution companies (DISCOS). The gencos and discos were privatized while FG retained transmission company for a reason. The FG transmission company buys all the energy generated from the GENCOS with millions of dollars daily and sell to the distribution companies to pass to our houses. Now, the distribution companies hardly want to buy sufficient energy from FG. They buy a little that they can give to industries that would make them the most profit and leave residential zone in darkness.

Transmission company buys all that the gencos produced so they won't go into bankrupt through Nigeria Bulk Electricity Ttading PLC (NBET). You may not have heard of this company ( http://nbet.com.ng/about-us/board-of-directors/ ) but I believe lots of shady deals go on there with FG monies
First, each of the DISCOs are 49% owed by the federal government.

Nonetheless, in a country of almost 200 million which somehow only has 6 million registered electricity consumers (which includes the military and the MDAs that refuse to settle their electricity bills), no person should rationally blame the DISCOs for not taking on electric power that it cannot collect payments for. More importantly, so long as NERC refuses to sanction cost-reflective tariffs (whereupon price of electricity generated at N58/kWh is capped at N32/kWh) and many consumers continue to steal power, there will not only continue to be a large amount of “stranded” power (that is, power generated but not distributed) but the DISCOs will continue to be both unable (and unwilling) to make the sorts of massive investments necessary to improve power supply - and neither will commercial banks provide the necessary finance!

I don't get what you are saying bro, shouldn't he do the right thing? If Discos refuse to buy and distribute available power from Gencos, should there be repercussions?
And who will buy anything for N52 that they will not be allowed to sell for more than N38?

Unless Mr. Sowore does the right thing on tariffs, he will simply end up with a bunch of licenses clogging up his desk.

Only in a nutty country like Nigeria would an artiste be campaigning for censorship. undecided

Can you imagine if Fela's songs (Na Poi, Open & Close, Expensive Shit, Zombie, etc.) were censored? To all of these folks typing nonsense comments in support of this sheer idiocy, there is something known as the MARKETPLACE! If folks do not like so-called "nonsense" songs nobody will buy or listen to them. It is unfortunate that many Africans tend to default to conformity and censorship, while it is the flourishing of a million ideas that often leads to the advancement of knowledge (and society).

The country practiced a floating exchange rate policy from 1999 - 2015 and it served the country very well. Why fix it when it ain't broken?

Nigeria has a positive trade balance so I have no idea where you get your stats from.

For a country like Nigeria withpopulation of 200m to be dependent on Dangote's refinery to stabilise the exchange rate is archaic. Nigeria by now should be refining at least 3m barrels daily but is looking up to Dangote to rescue it is sad and regressive

Switzerland with about 8.5m people imports $200b worth of goods annually yet Nigeria with its heft population barely manages $50b and we are talking about overimportation! The country barely imports anything in real terms in the first place!
I hope you realize that all of those Swiss stats that you are reeling out is virtually all the result of the activities of PRIVATE companies/persons? So one wonders what exactly you are waiting for as a PRIVATE citizen to keep up with the Swiss?!

Funny how many Nigerians talk about "Nigeria" as if it is some alien stand-alone entity completely divorced from them. Fact is that the Swiss built Switzerland. Dangote has done his bit (in fact more than his bit) for Nigeria, but what exactly have YOU chatterers done?!

Topmaike007:
can you pls help me to shed more light on the issue
Ibeto's biggest problem were his own people in Ebonyi State who flatly refused to let him take possession of the privatized Nkalagu Cement. sad

Nkalagu Cement was privatized at the same time as BCC Gboko (bid won by Dangote), Cement Company of Northern Nigeria (won by BUA), Edo Cement Company (also won by BUA), and Calabar Cement Company (won by Flour Mills/Holcim). Dangote had pretty much the same problems in Gboko that Ibeto has had at Nkalagu, with the Benue State government (led by then Gov George Akume, I believe) fighting tooth and nail to prevent Dangote taking control and instead seeking Oyibo investors (such as the then Blue Circle and LaFarge, each of which had their own Nigerian operations). Dangote worked extremely hard to overcome that initial hostility, and went ahead to virtually rebuild the BCC plant, raising production from 400,000 tons/yearly to 4 million tons/yearly while building a community hospital, schools and supplying electricity to the host community and large swathes of the state from its captive power plant. Meanwhile, it was until 2018 that Ibeto finally resolved its issues with the Ebonyi government and the Nkalagu community, and finally signed a contract with China's Sonoma to build new plants.

PS: Btw, at some point Ibeto was the ONLY Nigerian cement company that was importing ALL of its products, while all of the other companies (Dangote, BUA, LaFarge, Flour Mills/Holcim, etc.) were manufacturing locally.

CBN will even bring its vault to Dangote with a call to Aso Rock.....
Sincerely, there is need for concern how one single person wield so much power to influence Nigerian economic process.
Dangote has NOT gotten any "preferential treatment" that has NOT been made available to other Nigerian businesses.

You speak about rice importation, and while I am unfamiliar with your alleged story, Dangote was/is NOT the first nor the only Nigerian business to have been granted an import license. So what happened to the other licensees? Even with this refinery project, suffice it to note that at least 28 licenses had been issued for private refineries (dating back to the Obasanjo administration) BEFORE Dangote was granted a private refinery license by the Jonathan government. In fact, Dangote (and Otedola) had the winning bid in respect of the privatization of the Kaduna and Warri refineries revoked by the YarAdua government, and lost out in the bid for Eleme Petrochemicals (to Indorama) under the Obasanjo government. There's a reason that not everybody who is in the same classroom or school achieves the same level of success.

GOOD MOVE CBN! cool

The utility of foreign exchange (or reserves) should not be to just have it stored in vaults doing absolutely nothing for the general population. Accordingly, glad to see that CBN ensuring that the real sector and manufacturers in Nigeria such as Dangote Refinery gets priority access to foreign exchange, and in return this refinery and petrochemical and fertilizer complex when completed will not only help ensure that Nigeria no longer wastes foreign exchange on the obscenely stupid importation of petroleum products (with the insidious corruption attendant thereto) but also even helps Nigeria to earn more foreign exchange in exports of fertilizer, petrochemicals and petroleum products. Kudos!

While the technology transfer and capacity building stemming from such projects are laudable, I think SHI is trying to ease out LADOL from this contract. If they succeed, SHI will be solely responsible for the entire contract, leaving LADOL and the local content mandate of GEJ's era out. lets just keep hoping that real well meaning people will intervene in this matter and see to it that that SHI's intention doesn't fall through, if that's truly the case.

I am not supporting the deficit in the trainees' capability and readiness to learn, but we must start from somewhere. We may later begin to formally screen the trainees and entrench meritocracy in the workforce, while maintaining the overall objective of the venture.
I do not want SHI to cheat LADOL (if that's what they are planning to do), but local content is law so SHI cannot weasel out of it.

We all appear to be on the same side, but I just do not believe that our first or instinctive response when there is a dispute involving foreign investors is to kick them out (rather than to try to resolve it to the mutual benefit and satisfaction of all.

Nonetheless, US Supreme Court justice Elena Kagan was a classmate of President Obama who nominated her. Robert Reich the oustanding Labor Secretary under Clinton was a classmate of Hillary at Dartmouth and of Bill at Oxford. Accordingly, there’s nothing wrong with being a classmate of someone else in power, so long as you are qualified, capable and competent for the position. And frankly, most non-partisans would contend that Commissioner Edgal has done a relatively stellar job in the position.
