Really? Truth is, the typical Governor does not have to be super smart to succeed. Every State has a development plan and all a typical Governor need do is follow the aspect of the plan that is allied to his focus for the State. Ambode would have performed better had he concentrated on day-to-day governance while leaving the political side of things to his political backers. He cut them off and they switched him off!
Nigeria is suffused with so-called “development plans” (Vision 2010, Vision 20/20, NEEDS, Transformation Agenda, ERGP, etc.), so pardon me if I am less impressed with theoretical plans than actually seeing a Governor that not only delivers projects but seems to understand the essence of governance and the need to develop the requisite capacity to deliver same. Anyway, Nigerians have rarely (if ever) failed to punish success (how relative) while rewarding failure, so not particularly shocked here. I’m sure “political backers” like MC Oloumo are thrilled. But they tend to have actual PRACTICAL experience, which no amount of classroom theories can compensate for (even ignoring grade buying with money, sex or other means rampant in many Nigerian universities). Let them work with knowledgeable and experienced professionals and gain PRACTICAL experience therefrom. Some things are too important compromise with quotas (or xenophobia).

Quel blague!

Infrastructure in Abidjan is far better than lasgidi?
Again, heck no (and btw neither is Dakar, before you turn there).

Abidjan is a smaller city than Lagos and thus does not face quite the same level of infrastructural pressures that Lagos does. Furthermore, since the large-scale demolition of slums back on 2014/15 (something that will never happen in Lagos without all hell breaking loose), it has fewer slum settlements (albeit there are still a few). Nonetheless, large swathes of its physical infrastructure is aged and degraded (having been mostly built in the 1970s and 1980s under Houphouët Boigny’s government), which is why the Iviorian government in the middle of just this past year launched a new $7 billion infrastructure renewal and development plan (that would include an urban rail plan).

Interesting how someone who was born in Cambridge, went to school entirely in England and has never lived in Nigeria (perhaps not even visited) suddenly becomes “Nigerian” and (the factually-incorrect) “Nigerian-born” when she falls afoul of the law - and sadly with the apparent validation of self-hating low-esteemed Nairalanders. I think it is apparently a waste of time for our Civil and Building Engineers in this country to have studied Engineering. Why should foreigners be supervising our constructions. Haba
Who told you that foreigners are supervising the actual construction?

The foreigners in these pictures are the foreign investors who brought their MONEY to build the project. Nonetheless, even if they bring a few experienced foreign engineers to supervise the project, so what? Our own engineers will only learn from working with such foreigners on a project that would NOT exist without foreign funds, so it is ultimately a win-win situation. Professional merit should never ever be sacrificed on the altar of crass xenophobia (or the quota system that’s all but crippled our country). After all, when that massive building recently collapsed in Port Harcourt (as well as the many other buildings collapsing all over our country), there was nary a foreign engineer in sight.

Pity why are you comparing Lagos with other state. It's like comparing London with Birmingham. Try and compare Lagos with Johannesburg, Cairo, Nairobi and even Ivory Coast and you'd realise that Lagos is far behind in terms of public infrastructure
Heck no, it's not (with the arguable exception of Jo'burg). Only thing is that because Lagos is such a vast megapolis, infrastructure is uneven.

Silly attempt at cultural snobbery.

Dude, if you are looking to raise your IQ, first you should have avoided Nairaland (grin), and instead searched for a library somewhere because Gbedu is (primarily) for dancing! Anyway, music is the nearest thing that Nigeria has to a free marketplace of personal tastes, and therefore you are free to get off your behind and go do your own "high-IQ" music.

In every policy there will always be winners and losers. This was no exception.

Also you don't have to be an Otedola or an Ovia to be considered important to an economy

Thailand one time needed to be producing 17000 engineers yearly to meet the needs of the economy but was only able to deliver 12000 engineers. This shortage of engineers dismayed investors and many went to set up factories in China as well. So even a shortage of engineers can constrain growth. That is why many middle income countries are caught in the middle income trap- a shortage of skilled labour needed to take the country to the next level

One of the biggest beneficiaries of the bank recapitalisation was the middle class. Consumer lending to them flourished soon after. Prior to this period it was mostly bank workers able to enjoy such loans. Many could now buy cars by putting just 10% down.

So both the small and big guy are important to growth.
Strawman’s Argument. undecided

When I asked you what YOU yourself have contributed to Nigeria’s economy like the mostly PRIVATE citizens of Switzerland whose numbers you were misguidedly reciting, did you think that I had mistaken YOU for an Otedola or an Ovia.

Nonetheless, the topic is about Dangote and Dangote’s refinery, so it is bemusing that you seem confused when his financiers whom YOU yourself introduced into the discourse as critical success factors become the subject of proper analyses.

The tens of PSs he sacked ,the Lagos rice he vindictively dismantled in Imota and dumped the scrap in Idena, the LAWMA operators he put away from their jobs, the Drain Ducks he sacked, the security firms he put away from Lagos state owned estate that his relation could take over...

All these without listening to the cries of the public.

Now he has trashed democracy to be an emperor expending public funds without due process. He had no query to answer if he were a prince of a royal house. As a democratically elected governor,he needs give answers in this matter.

Nobody suffering under this Emperor blamed any one for their woes.
Blame no one when sanity is being brought back into governance in Lagos state.
And none of you folks saw this while Tinubu was praising him up until 2018? Or when the same House of Assembly members unanimously and quickly passed his 2018 budget proposal? Or even when the same Assemblymen were passing the Waste Management Law that changed the functions of LAWMA and "sacked" the Drain Ducks?!

The big fat black nonentity needs to be shown whom the boss is. He is thinking that because he is the governor, that makes him the boss. But he is wrong, power belongs to the people and can be taken back by the people at any time. The people are the boss and currently Tinubu is leading the people, so Tinubu is the boss. Tomorrow, the people may say they don't want Tinubu's leadership again and take the power from Tinubu and give it to another leader or another set of leaders. But until then, Tinubu the Jagaban is the boss of bosses and the big fat ugly Ambode with his uncultured and untrained wife from a faulty background should respect the boss.

So how will the Elumelus and co have achieved that feat without a change in policy? Policy is the soil. Ovia had no intention in the next 5yeara to recapitalise the capital base to 25b as this policy forced him immediately to make his bank public. Without a change of policy, he would not acted. Period!

I'm I to recapitalise my bank? I don't have one. Did you recapitalise yours or you were busy chattering?

Qq
What was confusing about "economic policies are merely ONE aspect of a successful economy"?

Did you confuse that with economic policy being entirely irrelevant to economic success? Again, for the avoidance of any doubt, economic policy is substantively WORTHLESS without the actions of PRIVATE citizens.

Many banks gave up their licenses rather recapitalize under Mr. Soludo's policy. Thus, it was NOT the policy by itself that was the crucial success factor but rather the Elumelus, Ovias, etc., picking up the guantlet.

Those stats I am reeling out can easily be gotten from wikipedia and you also have Nigerian stats as well. There's nothing big about stats. Even Nigeria has the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics.

What do you mean chatterers? I'm I the government? Do I look like the policy maker? And for your info even an ordinary farmer contrivutes to the economy by his farming. It is not until you build a multibillion dollar factory that you're a contributor!

Dangote Bill Gates or even Bezos (Now the world's richest man) can not change the country. The primary thing that transforms or change countries are policies.

Dangote said he won't be where he is today were it not for the bank recapitalization of carried out by Soludo.

Many who want to do things are not provided bank loans. Those who get these loans face a stiff business killing 25-35% on them! Bring lending rates down to single units and you'll see the economy sizzle!

Economic policies are the foundation for economic growth and are the primary determinants how good your economy does. The government should end chattering.
Dude, economic policy are merely one aspect of a successful economy.

The “best; economic policy is not worth the paper it is written on in the absence of the actions of PRIVATE citizens. Accordingly, it was not just Soludo’s bank reform policies that aided Dangote’s success. Rather, it required the foresight, courage, and actions of PRIVATE citizens such as the Elumelus (UBA), Ovias (Zenith), Adeolas (GTB), the Petersides (Stanbic IBTC) of this world and myriad other PRIVATE investors and citizens for those policies to bear fruit and for PRIVATE citizens like the Dangotes, Otudekos, Ezenwas of this world as well as several others to benefit therefrom. Ultimately, every successful advanced economy (even supposedly communist China) has been due the actions of PRIVATE individuals - and not just by chattering on the Internet and comparing largely meaningless stats.
